One of the prettiest trends on the market today is ombré. Technically, ombré means:
"A trick-taking card game for three people using a pack of forty cards, popular in Europe in the 17th–18th centuries."
Wait. What are you saying, Mr. Webster? Let's take a look in the Crafter's Dictionary:
"Ombré noun — Having colors or tones that shade into each other — used especially on fabrics in which the color is graduated from light to dark."
That's more like it.
There is a wonderful video by Nichole Heady over on her blog {capture the moment}. Nichole has a "Make It Monday" challenge every, um, Monday and this past Monday the challenge was "Overlapping Ombré." It sounds redundant, but it's clever really because it nicely melds the meaning with the word.
I struggled with the challenge. In the end, Dee Tritus sat on my desk.

I tried blues and then decided I liked greens better and I finally got a card that was pretty well lined up.
My NBUS on today's card is the pinefeather dotted ribbon from PTI. And I'm 99% sure I have never used the "thank you" sediment before. I also tried to make a couple of NBUS embossing folders work, but it made the card too busy with the ribbon, so this time the ribbon won.

PRINTER SURVEY
My laser printer is running low on expensive cartridges again and it doesn't like printing on vellum or on heavy card stock, so I think it's time for a change. So many of you print out digis, sentiments, and even colored patterned paper that look so crisp and I'm wondering what you use for your printer needs. Ink jet printers included. I already have one recommendation from a trusted friend, but Mister and I are old-school and he'd like it if I get more than the one.
Please tell me if you don't like your printer, too, so I can factor that into the results.
Thank you for your input! I will publish the results. Mwah!!
Fabulous card Darnell. The green works so well. I am not keen on my printer but can't remember what one it is so will come back and let u know
ReplyDeleteGreat card Darnell, green is a favourite of mine, fab stamping too. My desk looks rather similar to yours today, good fun eh?
ReplyDeleteAs for printers, well we have an Epson RX520 photo series , about 4 years old now though. I like it BUT it doesn't print onto card and if you want that you will be sad:( Of course it has expensive cartridges too:( Actually in tech gear it would be obsolete now, things move so quickly last months is old hat, dunno what that makes me? Noo don't answer that! Xx
Super card Darnell - and thank you so much for your kind words.
ReplyDeleteMy printer is an ink jet - so that might be ruled out - I love it though and Len also has the same one. It's a Canon MP560 - has a tray plus rear feed, is Duplex, great for photos and prints card like a dream!
Have a nice day, my LITS mentor :)
Hugs, Di xx
Love the design... it looks great in greens!
ReplyDeleteFab card love the layered "ombre" effect. My printer is the HP photosmart C4780 I print images, sentiments and digi papers with my printer and it also prints photo's really well and scans too - the only thing that I tried to put into it that it didn't like was a watercolour card which was super thick. Hope this helps x
ReplyDelete((hugs)) Suzie xoxo
Gorgeous card Darnell and I love your fun ribbon - hugs xx
ReplyDeleteFantastic card - and I think your definition/explanation of ombre is one of the best! Doubt I'll ever achieve anything as lovely as yours, but I'm pondering it (still have issues with 'colour-kissed' stamps though! Perhaps some therapy...). Glad I stopped by before heading to the bike race; you've got me smiling widely! Have a fantastic Saturday!!
ReplyDeletec
Fabulous card Darnell. I love the shades of green and the you have added the ribbon looks brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI will interested to hear how you get on with finding a new printer. It really annoys me how expensive my ink cartridges are to replace, they surely cannot cost much to make.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend
Sue xx
Darnell, wonderful card. You did a very nice job. I like how clean the card looks. Thanks too for sharing the video. I learned lots. As fo printer. I have an Epson Artisian 837. Of course they don't make that model now but I've had Epsons for several years and none have disapointed me. They are ink jet, which does have issues, but I print and use my Spectrum Noir pens and it's fine. Check the huge color sheet I did on one of my recent posts. The only smear is one I made trying to fix a coloring boo boo. Ink jet cartridges are much cheaper than laser, but they still aren't as inexpensive as I'd like. Good luck finding a printer. Hugs.
ReplyDeletePurty cardy. Interested to hear what you find about printers. We have an HP and I struggle with printing on vellum and thicker card doesn't go through. Pain in the
ReplyDeleteLove your colors and simple design! the trailing ribbon had me thinking tassles on a graduation cap! Had to do a double take! I guess I saw Green and Gold...the school colors here! Very nice card, Darnell!
ReplyDeleteI like how your Ombre card turned out! You would never guess you struggled with it! Thanks for the heads up on the yellow challenge over at CASology! Have a great weelend!
ReplyDeleteYour ombre design is fantastic Darnell--doesn't look like a struggle at all. Just perfect. The printer issue I know sort of there too. Epsom printers have always been good to me but my current hate any kind of thick cardstock. Anxious to see what everyone suggests.
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell, I think it was worth the effort because your card is stunning, love how it turned out!
ReplyDeleteMy printer is an HP Photosmart one but coming to the end of its life. I have already decided to go for the all singing, all dancing Kodak Inkjet one, the cartridges are reasonably priced and it scans and photocopies too. Hope that helps. Hugs, Anne x
Very much worth the effort and think it's fabulous! Love the blue and green together and that ribbon is so pretty and fun! Fantastic card!
ReplyDeleteI just have a Canon inkjet - as far as how I like it etc. - just ok. Nothing special by any means. It doesn't print out the colors of digital paper very good but I very seldom use it for that anyway!
Lynn
Hi Darnell, I've been a bit AWOL of late - busy home life and missing mojo - but I had to have a look at your ombre card as my teenage daughter has ombre hair! It actually looks really nice - as does your card - super CAS shades of green. Take care. xx
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see someone else has to practice stamping. Yours turned out great. As for a printer, I have an HP 6380 Photosmart all in one. I did a lot of research before I bought it and have had no problems with it until lately (it's probably 6 or 7 years old). I don't do much all over color printing and you can go into the settings and change for heavier cardstock. It also does well on vellum. I have used ink for at least 2 tio 3 weeks beyond the notification that you need to change cartridges. I'd say it's served me well.
ReplyDeleteLove my Brother 7860DW printer. It is a laser as well!
ReplyDeleteHi Dolly. LOVE your design of your ombre card. Fab colors too ... and the ribbon and square brad are perfect.
ReplyDeleteI have an old HP inkjet printer that's about on it's last legs. As many have mentioned, a lot of printers won't print on heavy cardstock or watercolor paper. Here's what I do to get around that. I made a template of a rectangle box the size of a standard card ... and I have the box located near the bottom of the page on my file (about 1" from the bottom). I used this template, adding my digital images to it each time, which also helps me with the sizing as well. I print off the image onto computer paper.
On to the printing for the card ... I cut my cardstock to the standard size and use temporary adhesive to attach it over my printed template, lining it up with the rectangle box and then re-insert into my printer. The printer starts chugging along and grabs the computer paper and starts feeding it through before it realizes that there is a thicker piece attached part way down the page, it's already gone through and printed. Hope that makes sense. Lolly xx
Love the card, Darnell! Nice to see others practice to get a good stamping. I use a Lexmark 4360....ink jet. Cartridges are not cheap, must heat ink to color with alcohol markers. Vellum printing is ok, cardstock not too thick shoes well. Anxiously await your survey results.
ReplyDeleteLove your dynamic ombre card...the ribbons and square brad finish it so nicely. I enjoyed reading the survey remarks too...I have a HP photo smart all in one ink jet printer that I love. When the cartridges show empty...I will continue printing until I see it fading.
ReplyDeleteBe well Carole
Love your ombre card, and your definition! I use a Canon but it doesn't take thicker cardstock. I'll be interested to see the results of your survey as I've already got some specs I want when I'm ready to update mine :) Cathy x
ReplyDeleteSuper colours, super card, Darnell ... those the long bands of polka dot ribbon!
ReplyDeleteI use a Canon MP640 ... it does everything it should do, brilliantly. The only thing it could do better is be less argumentative when asked to take 300gsm cardstock! Anita :)
Darnell, fabulous card and I love the green. Such a sweet thank you card too. As always, I love seeing how your desk looks, it makes me feel so good that I am not the only one with a big mess. Good luck with your printer hunting...I love my hp...it does not print good quality photos but it prints on PTI's stampers select white cardstock with absolutely no problems at all. Love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat take on the ombre technique, I must head on over and take a look at the video. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI like my Canon MG6150 ink jet printer, I can print card stock in through the back feed and I use it for digital images but not a lot else. I like that the ink cartridges are separate so I only have to change the one that is empty. Oh, and I can print directly onto CD or DVD discs, this is heaps of fun.
Love your card . . . I have that stamp set. You've inspired me to pull it out and experiment.
ReplyDeleteI use an Epson Artison color printer. There are different models but I love mine! My ink cartridges are separate and that works out great, I only have to change the ones that run out. I haven't had a problem running cardstock through it. I agree with Therese, having a model that the cardstock can feed through the back would be ideal though.
I use my HP Laser jet that I bought ages ago to print out most of my digis. It's a workhorse and the toner lasts "FOREVER"!!! I prefer laser prints for any digis that I'm going to color in. For digis that I want to colorize I use my Epson color printer. I can run very thick cardstock through my HP laserjet. I select the option to feed through the back so the paper doesn't have to curl around the rollers. Works GREAT!
Happy printer shopping!
Wow - absolutely perfectly stamped images and precisely lined up! Well done! It is obvious, that perseverance is one of your personality traits! I bet it felt great though when it all worked out...maybe a good old fist pump and a rather loud "YEAH"
ReplyDeleteBeautiful results. Stunning, simple design. Love how your mat mimics the shapes of the stamped elements!
I use a HP inkjet printer (ancient). This sucker prints on anything! Old school tough. Will likely cry when it dies.
Your green ombre card is so pretty, Darnell. I really like the shades you used, and the pretty ribbon, too! Very pretty. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAs far as printers, I have an HP Officejet 6500A plus (wireless). It suits my needs fine for now, but I do wish it could do more. It takes PTI cardstock pretty well, but definitely makes it sound like a big job! I do like that I can print out digital images and use my Copic markers with the ink - doesn't run or bleed, etc. That's a big deal for me.
Hope you find something that works!
So I think Geri has the same printer that I did that just died...7 years old and it was a gem. *sniffle* We replaced it with the closest model we could find:
ReplyDeleteHP Deskjet 1000. The cartridges are $40 (Can) for a black/colour combo pack. The printer itself cost $30, lol! It prints on anything I throw at it - 110 lb cardstock goes through as easily as paper - and the print quality is not too bad. I don't do a lot of colouring, but watercolouring is definitely a no-go with this one. Alcohol markers are OK.
I love the layout you ended up with - and around here I thought I'd tell you our detritus 'word' is Dimitri. A long-ago mishearing led to a long-term inside joke :)
Love how the mat reflects the shape of the stamp. Very cool stamping!
ReplyDeleteI have an Epson Stylus Photo printer. It's a scanner/copier/printer and the carts require 5 colors plus black and they are quite pricey! I'm happy with how it prints digis (on neenah cardstock) but I've never tried to print dsp because I have enough bought paper to last me 'til I'm 125 yrs old! I never tried printing on vellum because I don't use it, and it will NOT print on heavy cardstock (PTI) regardless of the settings I use. It just jams and sits in the feeder and ends up with a big blob of black on the top of the sheet :) It works for my needs, so I'm not complaining :)
ReplyDeleteLove your take on the ombré effect.
ReplyDeleteI really want to give it a try!
so clean and contemporary too!
TFS~
Love your card--and thanks for the information about ombre. I learned something today, and that is always a good thing. The way you used the ribbon is very fun--kind of like an award.
ReplyDeleteI have a Cannon Pixma printer which uses inject cartridges. It is an all singing all dancing one and does everything bar wash and dry the dishes but I got The Doc for that so I'm happy!!! Hugd Mrs A.
ReplyDeleteI think I did it again! I thought I had posted a comment, but I guess not! I get so engrossed in your neat posts and all your great links...that I get side tracked and forget to post.
ReplyDeleteYour card is really well done, and so creative!
