I am briefly back with two watercolor cards from Day Two of the Online Card Class, even though the class today is Day Three. Since I will prolly be behind from here on out, I'm going to stop with the day notations which are just confusing. I am loving these classes!
Here are my cards:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
For both of my cards today I used a NBUS product called Frisket Liquid Masking. I first learned about this product from the world-famous Heather Telford, but I hadn't opened the bottle before today. From the aroma, I'm guessing that this schtuff is made from the hooves of dead hippos, but once you get past that, it's easy and magical to use.
On the cards above, I masked the flowers with Frisket and applied it last night and then let it dry over night. This morning I painted the background with a watercolor wash right over the top of the Frisket biscuits. Afterwards, the cards were treated with a blow dry, and placed under lovely quilted books to relax and meditate. I loved the entire process. Hammy got a wash and curl while I was at it, and in turn he gave me a nine-figure mani. Chocolate anyone?
Once the paint was dry, the Frisket was removed with a gum eraser and index finger. On the top card, the Frisket peeled off so-so. I had to reink with a pen a few areas where the ink came off with the mask.
I am entering this card in the One-Layer Simplicity Challenge for May. The theme is flowers and the challenge is open until the 24th, so I hope you can link up and light up the gallery with your OLC!
However. On the second card, the Frisket really peeled away the image almost completely (same paper and same ink) and even beyond the image and into the colored background. Crudballs. I salvaged the card by stamping the image again on scratch paper, fussy-cutting it, and gluing it over the top of the crudded-up image. I also rewashed the areas of color that were peeled away. It was just too pretty not to salvage as best I could.
I'm pretty sure that my problem with the Frisket was because I was using letter press cardstock. It takes color well, but I think it is just too soft to be a good candidate for hippo hooves. Just FYI. I'll be using the mask again on different paper coz it's cool and I'll show you how it turns out when I do.
Hi Darnell, As someone who has used frisket a lot in my watercolors I can say for sure that your problem was the paper you used. Really need to use watercolor paper with that stuff! Love how your cards turned out. Really pretty backgrounds. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteDonna
I have a bottle of that mask and I've never opened it! Kind of glad I haven't from your description. I'll make sure I have a window open when I do! What a shame that taking it off took off some of your design too. I can't tell it from these photos so you've done a fantastic job of saving them! I may put this technique off til last.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a peel and paste project so far. Does it work for removing hair? The cards turned out beautiful in spite of the hair remover. Having fun yet. I sure hope so.
ReplyDeleteBlessings
You are absolutely hysterical! I just love reading these posts! Whatever you did, the cards are just lovely! I haven't even given this technique a second glance! You are a brave woman!
ReplyDeleteWow a, I ever behind in commenting! Hope the thumb is all better. Hammy sounds about normal. :) Love the bright colors you're using and the class sounds fab! Grunge? Where's the grunge? One woman's grunge is another's ...really, grunge?! Say has FS arrived out your way yet?She's been kinda quiet lately. I follow you using bloglovin. Works a charm, wish my hands did the same. Hugs
ReplyDeleteYou are so much fun! Sure wish we lived closer! Your cards turned out beautifully, especially since smelly hooves were involved! Lol...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDouble A++'s on both of those cards, Darnell! I'd never heard of the magic elixir hereafter known as "hippo hooves." Might have to get me some and try it. Beautiful flower images, and absolutely gorgeous water coloring. So pretty and soothing. Well done, and I'm glad you're enjoying the class. Bev
ReplyDeleteYou're just too cute and so much fun to visit Darnell!! And I love your [pretty pretty cards!
ReplyDeleteOh my these two cards are both amazing and beautiful. I so enjoy visiting your blog and thanks so much for your visits to my blog and your comments I do enjoy seeing you pop by.
ReplyDeleteI have frisket too and it does smell! It also gets too old! Like me! Mine is all separated and stuck like a blob in the bottom of the bottle. I sure like how it works though. Love how you designed your latest creations.
ReplyDeletegreat cards Darnell ...I agree the aroma Of the masking fluid is interesting to say the least!... I haven't rubbed mine off yet as it was still wet think i out it on too thick !....then we will see if I have the same problem..I had a few problems and a late finish at work yesterday ..not the day I had planned !...so I did not get the opportunity to do anything arty yesterday or even check out day 3 so like you I'm behind; but its not a race and I'm really enjoying it.Hopefully today after work I can do a bit more ....i've some lovely painted pieces to transform into cards. Thanks for the warning about the fluid as mine was a pretty old bottle before I started ...unused and it may remain unloved!...we will see...I love the stamps you used and the finished cards are fab,what a great idea to fussy cut the stamp out; I wouldn't have thought of that and started again!....I hope you have another creative and fab day and I hope you too continue to enjoy the lessons . Crafty hugs Andrea X
ReplyDeleteHello Darnell, two beautiful cards, and you really wouldn't know what you had to do to the second one. They are beautiful! I have a bottle of liquid masking fluid andi was quite disturbed by the smell too!
ReplyDeleteBoth beautiful, Darnell ... such lovely delicate colours! Way to go rescuing them from the maraunding hippos ... you sure took those heavy hooved herbivores in hand! Hugs, Anita :)
ReplyDeleteDarnell, your watercolour cards are gorgeous, I especially love these two they are beauties.
ReplyDeleteTwo really really beautiful cards Darnell! Just love the soft colours.
ReplyDeleteOh these are so lovely ... makes me want to reach for my paints right now!! Hope your thumb is getting better ...
ReplyDeleteBoth cards are gorgeous, but I am in love with the first one! So beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWonderful cards Darnel, love the water color effect.
ReplyDeleteWell done.
The more I see of your watercolour cards the more I wish I had joined the class too - I may still do! Your cards are both beautiful and an absolute delight for these old eyes... Hugs, Annie xxx
ReplyDeleteYour cards are lovely! I read your post yesterday, and I couldn't comment between your description of the product your used, and reading the comment my hubby gave you...I was laughing too hard...had to come back later...I think my stomach still hurts from laughing.
ReplyDeleteI love both of these watercolour cards, and the colours are so pretty. I love the stamped images you have used and keeping them white makes them stand out beautifully. I have in the past only used masking fluid over watercolour but then we always removed it asap after the paint was dry, but as you say it may be down to the paper. Nevertheless you would never know there was a problem as they are both gorgeous. x
ReplyDeleteWonderfully creative, Darnell! I shared your "flickr" instructions with Brenda! I told her if she has any questions to ask the expert...YOU!
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell....Love both of your card the color are lovely and the flowers are beautiful...I miss to visit your blog and I just can do it today...I have a little story why I was not in Blog land do blog hop...because my Husband was painting the room also I have to move all the drawer the cupboard and the table to other room it means no time to blogging and now I can do it again and happy to visiting you...your card always delightfull and I am happy to know you...hope you too..hugs, Monika
ReplyDeleteDarnell, both of your cards are so beautiful. I wasn't able to do that technique because I don't have the Frisket. I also wonder if it stuck more because you left it on overnight. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteWonderful cards. I stuck with the rubber cement, and it peeled off pretty well once I used the TH watercolor paper. On other efforts it peeled layers of paper up. I think frisket is intended for use with water coloring, and probably watercolor paper, though you see it used on other papers as well, just seems it is in smaller bits.
ReplyDeleteEnough, back to your cards, great save with the fussy cutting. I didn't try the resist with a texty bg stamp, but after seeing yours I just might. Have a great day and enjoy the call in your time.
Ooohers! I like 'em both. I'm behind ALL the days, but got the files saved for later. I'm liking both of these pretty w/colors. I have some Maskapeen stuff, NBUS. Gotta check out Heather's Frisket. You are going great guns with these, and I enjoyed your adventures in the process. (Best to Hammy too. He's such an able assistant. Does he make house calls?). You're doing terrific with your homework, even though you had some toe stubs. Those are just opportunities for good saves. You still had 2 fantastic cards. I'm loving the gorgeous bird (?hawk?) with his blue background too. Superb photo of him surveying his kingdom. (looking for lunch?) TFS & Hugs. Happy Mom Day.
ReplyDeleteDespite having to contend with 'eau de hippo hooves' and the frustration of the bandaged digit (hope healing is happening!), you've created two totally stunning cards (and extra marks for your ingenuity in the 'saves'!). I wonder if embossing the images rather than frisketing them would have a similar effect? May have to try...sometime! Another day-brightening post, fabulous inspiration, and 'stuff' learned...A+++ for you once again!! Hugs~c
ReplyDeleteYour cards are so pretty with those soft colors. Very spring looking and have a feminine appeal to me.
ReplyDeleteLovely cards Darnell. The colours are so subtle and soft. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteYou would never know that you had any problems with these two B beautiful cards, the watercolour effect is definitely one I'll have to try!x
ReplyDeleteTwo gorgeous cards, love the effect!
Two gorgeous cards Dippy. You'd never know you had problems with the frisket..for some reason I keep wanting to sing "a tisket a tasket, I've lost my yellow basket".....heh. .Looking forward to seeing your next creations.
I love these, it's a really fun twist to leave the image uncolored and add colors to the background!
ReplyDeleteI recently purchased some new masking fluid because of Heather's beautiful creations and the paper masks don't always do what I want/need them to.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these are stunning, love the colours and love the stamps even more - looking forward to seeing more! Karen x
Love your works of art … watercolors! The image on the text is gorgeous! My mom and now I always sing that song and the kids love it.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cards there. I have some masking fluid but not used it yet. Great tip about using watercolour paper.
ReplyDeleteHugs
xx
You are doing a great job with your on line classes. Wish I could take it but on vacation for most of May.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a riot, Darnell...but, I know I've told you that a million times! Thank you so much for always making me smile...and laugh...really hard!
ReplyDeleteYour cards are breathtakingly beautiful! I gasped when I saw the first one, then really, really gasped when I saw the second one...WOW! I have to get some of that Frisket Liquid Masking stuff, because even though it gave you trouble afterward, the effect is stunning! You go straight to the head of the class with these 2 cards...for sure!!!
Thanks for making me laugh again! You and Hammy are quite the pair! Your cards came out great. I would have never known that they gave you so much trouble. I can't try this technique as I don't have any frisket or rubber cement on hand. But yes, keep us posted how it works on another kind of paper.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a lovely post again, Darnell!! Enjoyed it so much!!!
ReplyDeleteYour cards are stunning - love the soft colours and the beautiful stamps you've used. Would not have guessed that you had to 'rescue' the second one!!!
Love the watercoloured backgrounds, Darnell - and great save on the second card.
ReplyDeleteOuch. I'm so sorry the original got ruined but you recovered nicely. I ended up using rubber cement and it worked fine, plus it doesn't smell bad and I didn't have to wait long for it to dry. I could also get it locally and it's inexpensive. ;) I love the script background on the first card. It adds that little something extra.
ReplyDeleteLove those pretty backgrounds! TFS
ReplyDeleteThese are so pretty, Love the effects u achieved on the second one :) and definitely a great save on that one !!
ReplyDeleteI bought the masking fluid after seeing how Heather used it, but my bottle still hasn't been opened! Maybe I'll give it a go now--love your cards, Darnell!
ReplyDeleteTwo beautiful cards Dolly ... and a great save with the second one. You're right ... too pretty to give up on it. Great job improvising! Looks like you are having lots of fun with the course. I have learned a lot, but have fallen way behind in my homework :) At least there's no detention :) Lolly xx
ReplyDeleteTaking the watercolor class after I finish their wonderful stencil class! Your cards are terrific! I really like your masking and reminding me I have some of that wonderful masking with the beautiful smell too (that I hadn't used either). Your BG's for both are beautiful and thanks for the info on how you salvaged the second. A beautiful job and I will forgo the Frisket on cardstock I think. LOLOL Great product review. Maybe that's why I hadn't used it. Mine has been opened. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWow...another gorgeous card my friend! I love it and can't wait to see more of your water color master pieces.
ReplyDeleteA frisket, a frasket, hippo hooves in a basket! I've heard of the liquid mask stuff before but never saw it in action before. It gives a very nice look. I'm sorry it tried to eat your second card. You did a great save though.
ReplyDeleteFrisket Liquid Masking...Whaaaat?
ReplyDeleteTwo more pretty, pretty creations! I love the cool "happy" stamp and the pastel colored brads! Gorgeous inked panels on the newsprint too!
Damn hippo hooves...
