I am pickled tink to be coming to you today as the Guest Designer for Addicted to CAS! What an honor to be in the inspiration parade along with the extremely talented Design Team card artists! Thank you very much for asking me to join you for the month of May!
The theme for this challenge is "Off the Edge" as you already figured out from the title . . . unless you thought I was just talking about how I normally conduct my day-to-day life inside my hamster-sized brain. This fun theme was chosen by our challenge hostess, the wild and crazy, off-the-edge, and extraordinarily talented Marie!
For my card, I made a concentrated concert of consecutive concentric circles. I was planning to have the circles be off the edge with a huge die-cut greeting emanating forsooth from the smallest circle, but if any of you have ever had a pet goose, then you know how inquisitive they can be.
Hello?
Many of you have met my goose, "Gunther." Gunther needs dental work and he has a thyroid condition resulting in protruding eyes, but when he puts on that baseball cap and manages to extricate himself inside my stitched circles, well, he is nothing short of adorable!
I made him stay all stuck in the layers that way until I took his picture. To keep him from flopping around and flapping his webbed feeties in the air, I put some Hello Steps under him to steady him. Thank goodness for digital cameras. You don't wanna know how many shots I had to take before I got this great photo of him resting his wings on the rings and his tippy-toes on the letters!
What a goose!
[He comes from a company called Mostly Animals which is sadly now out of business. But you can get the hello from Stamps for Life and the stitched rectangles and circles from Lil' Inker.]
I hope you can come and play with me over at ATCAS with your own Off the Edge creation! The generous sponsor for this challenge is Kathryne of Stamp Art Design!
Thanks to a lovely friend, I am editing my post to add my stitched circle card to the wonderful new challenge in Blogland hosted by everyone's friend, Virginia Lu. The third Virginia's View Challenge is to add stitching to your card. Thankfully, faux stitching is allowed!
There's More!
I made a second card for you at the last minute last night. I am now a little behind on my watercolor classes, but I still have all kinds of watercolor Perry Fanalia all over my desk and I happened to notice a postie note reminding me to make a card using a potato stamp.
So, of course, I queried of myself, what if I made a potato stamp, watercolored with it, and made a design that went off the edge? (I could say I killed three birds with one card, but with Gunther on the page, I won't say it.)
So, of course, I queried of myself, what if I made a potato stamp, watercolored with it, and made a design that went off the edge? (I could say I killed three birds with one card, but with Gunther on the page, I won't say it.)
Here is the potato result:
I made you a little scalloped potato casserole of photos to show you how I made my heart stamp out of a potato using a cookie cutter. You just never know what you'll see here!
I think the pictures explain the simple process better than I could with words. There are people who can make the most awesome "stamp" designs using a potato, but with Hammy already in bed, I'm not one of them, so I simply used an EZPZ cookie cutter.
This is actually my second time stamping with a potato. I potato-stamped a year ago (here), but that time I literally just cut a potato in half and stamped it in ink and then onto paper. Next time maybe I'll carve out a design free-hand. Or not. I have a lot of cookie cutters languishing about that are really excited about becoming potato cutters.

I used TH alcohol inks which I placed on an acrylic block, splotched with blending fluid, and fussed with a paint brush, so I will enter my card in the Day Four Gallery at class. The sequints are a pretty aqua green, but they turned pink in the lights. I didn't know sequints were embarassed to have their pictures taken, but there you are, you can see for yourself how they blushed. The sediment is from "Signature Greetings" by Papertrey Ink.
The hearts are a bit rumply because I accidentally grabbed a piece of calligraphy paper for my potato stamping instead of watercolor paper. I liked the colors so much, however, that I decided to use them anyway, rumples and all. I slathered them with WOS and I have to tell you, this is one of those cards that looks really cool in IRL. (f you look closely, you can see the potato/paper combination gave my potato hearts capillaries!)
The potato challenge I mentioned is the Craft Stamper "Take It/Make It" challenge for May. The link will provide you with all the details on rules, sponsors, and prizes. You will also see awesome inspiration examples made by those potato stamp designers I was telling you about. Try it, you'll have fun!!
New Friends Corner
It is my pleasure to introduce you to our newest friend! Please help me welcome Char K. of Glitter in My Kitchen! Love the name! I also love that Char calls herself "Chark" from her first name and initial. (When our son was in elementary school and he had to write his name in the upper right-hand corner as one does, he would print Dan K so close together that it always looked like "Dank." I still sometimes call him Dank just to tease him!) You will find that Chark is extremely multi-talented. She is the author of a children's book on military life, and she enjoys all types of paper crafting! I know you will enjoy getting to know her!
Thank you for joining, Chark, and welcome to the Playhouse!

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy. LITS!*
Happy Mother's Day if you are celebrating on Sunday! I send you an extra hug if the day is a hard one for you.

Amazing cookie cutter potato stamped card ... gorgeous colour and effect on the hearts, so gentle and delicious! You surely do know how to brighten up a drizzly Saturday morning, my friend ... thanks for the chuckles, giggles and guffaws! Anita :)

Thanks so much Darnell for the lovely words did have to look behind me to see it was really me you where talking about ! Absolutely fabulous to have you as GDT member especially as Im the host for the first one. Two amazing cards feeling sorry for Gunther maybe he is a little dizzy trapped inside the circles maybe the sentiment should read HELP ! as for the potato card how clever never thought of using one of those shaley cutters and will deco have a go at that. The water colouring is superb very effective indeed.
ReplyDeleteHave a super wekend
Marie

fabulous Darnell, I love the goose card-I must have missed these stories! And love how you made the potato cutter-such a funky idea. I don't bake or cook much so have no cookie cutters and potatoes are not often on the agenda, so will fess up and say I won't be trying this but love what you did and we are so pleased you joined us at ATCAS x

ReplyDeleteFirst time I'm meeting, Gunther, and I love him!! When I first noticed that big scarve round his neck I thought he had a cold or a sore throat, but I'm glad that's not the case!!!! I DO love his eyes, hey, just a pity about the thyroid - hope you've got him on medication!!! Your card is just so super cool, Darnell!!! Love your off the edge circles and the big hallo, with Gunther placed perfectly!! Great card!!
As for the potato card - you are so super clever to cut your potato with the cookie cutter!! And your card looks great!!! Loving the colours and the (blushing!!) sequins!!!
This is another super Darnell post!!! You had me giggling all the way as I read it!!!
Have a super weekend!!
Yippee and congratulations of your well deserved guest design at ATCAS1 Such a fun card as I would expect from you. How cool is that technique I remember potato stamping at school as a kid but this grown up version is awesome!
ReplyDeleteGunther is quite the acrobat huh!!! This is too much fun Darnell, just like you. CONGRATS on guesting, you rocked it! And your potato hearts look marvelous!
ReplyDeleteOnly you could go from a goose stuck in an off-the-edge target to a pretty, soft and feminine potato card. Wow, you don't get to say a sentence like that every day! The goose made me laugh - he's really got a personality that comes across in that card!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the guest spot, Darnell! Love your "edgy" card (poor Gunther, set him FREE lol!) And I love your clever potato card, the soft colors are so lovely!
ReplyDeleteLove the Goose card Darnell but don't hang it out side. The potato stamp is a reminder of days past. We used to make stamps and use food coloring to make fun images. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. A fun take on the card as well.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your designer guest spot gig Darnell-they chose the perfect person! I am so loving your goose card. That goose cracks me up just like you crack me up. It is such a joy to read your posts because it always gives me a nice chuckle and who doesn't want to chuckle?! I love your second card too, I've heard and seen other people use a potato to craft with, just never done it myself. How clever you are to use a cookies cutter to get a nice shape, cause I can't draw a dang thing freehand. lol I love, love this card too. Love visiting your blog! Hugs

ReplyDeleteDarnell...a big congrats on being a guest designer for Addicted to CAS...and your card is just so fun. I love all your circles and your sweet little critter, just about as cute as can be. Your potato card is fun. We made roses using celery stalks cut off with red paint. So much fun to use non traditional items to stamp with. Wishing you a wonderful Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the GDT spot! I love Gunther but I hope he doesn't stay too long, he looks a bit like a sitting target, but a very cute one.

Your second card is just gorgeous, Love your potato stamping and the gorgeous colours you've chosen.
ReplyDeleteHugs.

You should be a children's author; your stories are always so entertaining. :) I picked up on the alliteration, too. LOL Thanks for the chuckle. Just finished up a half-day of cleaning, followed by a 6yo's birthday party...makes for one tired mama. Little girl is very happy, though. It was worth every second. Happy Mother's Day to you!

I'm not brave enough to try that...cluck, cluck. You, however, have done the potato stamping beautifully! Great cards. Bev

I love both these cards and I am so pleased Gunther has made a return visit because he is one hilarious goose, and your potato cut using the cookie cutter is inspired and works perfectly with those pretty colours you have used. I also love that embossing folder, and the way that embossed piece and the sentiment mat lie over each edge keeping it symmetrical. Hope you are having a great Mother's Day. x
ReplyDeleteAs always Darnell, your cards are unique, awesome and great fun! Love the rotating Gunther(he must be feeling rather sick now though), and the potato stamps brought back crafty childhood memories - no rubber stamps back then - just potatoes!!

ReplyDeleteI'm loving that goose lost in the circles. The eyes make him look stunned that he's caught in there! I've never stamped with a potato but it looks like fun and you could make all kinds of things with cookie cutters. It does look pretty and not "potatoish" at all. Have a wonderful Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to use the cookie cutter to get a clean looking potato stamp. The card turned out lovely! Thanks for joining us at the Take It Make It Challenge.
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot this post was!! Had me giggling from the get go. Off the edge, indeed! Your cards are grand and your way around to something is always intriguing. Your commentary always leaves me with a smile and most times with an out loud laugh! Bless you.
