I am still in love with all things Shari Carroll emanating from the Online Card Class I am taking. She did this incredible emboss resist watercolor painting which had amazing depth and part of the image faded off the paper in an awesome fashion. Several of the card artists taking the class have CASEd her perfectly! I don't have a cool honeycomb or hexagon or similar background stamp like Shari used, so I used a NBUS block background stamp called "Inspiration Mosaic" by Gina K. Designs.
And I made this.
Even though this background stamp isn't as dramatic for this type of painting, it is still a pretty color block of watercolor painting. Like the inspiration, I had the edge fade away and I turned my card to have the fade-out be at the bottom.
Then I went in search of a challenge to give me inspiration for how to use my pretty background. I decided to play in the current TIME OUT Challenge which is "Time Flies ~ Love Lasts."
I pulled out my little container of clock/time stash and found the perfect wood veneer timepiece which I smooshed through a pool of purple watercolor paint.
I giggled out loud when I found that I had a stamp that actually said "time flies!" It's NBUS, and I don't know who makes it, but it was cool to find it. I next pulled out my "love" word dies and knew immediately that the block script of this love die (also NBUS) from Papertrey Ink would be a perfect die for the block pattern of the background.
S'kewl, right? You're with me so far?
And then somehow it all went horribly wrong when I decided to travel back to 2003 and rip off the bottom of my card. My thinking was something having to do with the paints dripping down beyond the block pattern and fading away and so it might be cool to have the card be ripped along the edges of the paints.
You know, like time tearing through the fabric of our love, or love lasts through the torn ridges of time, or ... or? Dude, what were you thinking?

The bottom line (oh, hahaha) is that a lot of work and effort went into this card before I decided to rip into it and I'm for sure not going to not share it with you, even if it means I have to resort to double negatives to do it.
And that's what happened. I'm moving on. I suggest you do the same. Just move along folks. There's nothing more anyone can do for this card. Officer, would you please put up the crime scene tape and bring in forensics? And would someone please find me that doggone hamster?!

Darnell, you always make me smile! I used to rip my cards all the time. The background stamping is absolutely gorgeous. Could you trim it and remount it to a new card base?! of course, I love seeing you at Time Out!

ReplyDeleteYou crack me up Darnell! I love this card and thought the torn corner edge looked pretty cool looking! I did how ever feel your pain after working so hard on this card and then tear it. I still think this is a beautiful card torn edge and all!! Hugs
ReplyDeleteGorgeous card Darnell and I actually like the torn paper look! Fantastic.

This technique has almost convinced me to try watercolouring. I've seen a lot of the other ones but the scale of yours (bigger blocks rather than lots of little areas (which are very pretty)) shows the versatility of this technique! I saw it on your desk in your WOYWW post and I'm glad to see it here in this gorgeous card!
ReplyDeleteYour post always make me chuckle! I just love your sense of humor! I used to tear my layers a lot and still love the look. Don't know why I don't do it anymore... You might have brought back a trend! And your reasoning makes perfect sense... "time tearing through the fabric of love"... You did a fabulous job on that background!
ReplyDeleteI don't think this is an oopsie at all! Actually like the torn edge very much. Very artistic, and don't you dare throw it away! Loved the color blocking, the dies and you are acing this class, my friend. The tearing went perfectly with the idea of time tearing away from us! You're ahead of your time (?). LOL. TFS & Hugs.
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at your "crime scene" since I can identify several times over. I once entered a card at Less Is More, which I totally "got". And Chrissie commented that neither she nor Mandi understood how it fit the challenge. Oh, I just about cried. What made it worse, is that I'd won the challenge a few months back and I thought I was one LIM hot ticket card-maker. Nothing like a little humility now and again. Have a great week. I mean it, for real! :D
ReplyDeleteLOL Darnell you do make me lOL hamster indeed!. only you could turn a negative into such a wow... positive great technique and fab idea to use the block stamp i stryggle with my own inetrpretaion you have gottaht well sorted ...i think it stil looks good ...it has impact ...crafty hugs Andrea ..
ReplyDeleteVery pretty card, Darnell, torn edge and all. haha Great post!
ReplyDeleteThe painted background is so much fun! And the big sentiment is the perfect way to finish it off!
ReplyDeleteOh, Darnell, another very enjoyable post from you!! I love your great sense of humour and you always have me giggling and smiling!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your bg blocks - lovely colours and I like the fading colour towards the bottom. Love your love die, too, but as for the ripped corner - why not dug out the piece you've ripped off, from the dustbin and try to mend it with cellotape (maybe a plaster would do the job, but you'll have to put it on the inside of the card, hey!!) LOL!!!
Have a great day!!
Gorgeous colours.
ReplyDeleteSorry not been commenting lately but have been without my computer for well over a week, it has been inn hospital but hopefully the treatment has worked.

Torn edge or not, I think the background is fabulous. The lights, the darks, the mix of colors. BTW I think Hammy may be off filming Sprint commercials. lol I think of you every time I see one.
ReplyDeleteSCORE on the time flies stamp! And oh, Hammy, my goodness. See what happens when you're off gallivanting? I happen to like the ripped edge - but if you don't like it, then I can understand the desire for the forensics team. :)
ReplyDeleteWell! This is very pretty with the watercolor background and BIG love! And very artistic (ahem) with the torn corner. Actually, I think it adds interest!
ReplyDeleteThis is just beautiful. You are making me wish I took this class.
ReplyDeleteYou continue to do fabulous work in this watercolor class, Darnell (and I continue to wish I was taking it, ha!) Lovely card!!
ReplyDeleteYou are so FUNNY!!!!!!!!!! I love the background color blocked stamp you chose for this card, and I think it looks gorgeous...with the torn edge! I'm so impressed with all the beautiful cards you've been creating with water colors, Darnell...Keep up the 'great' work!
ReplyDeleteSeriously....my first thought when I saw the torn edge was "Wow - that looks really unpredictably cool!"
ReplyDeleteGorgeous colors, "Love" the time piece and am amazed that your schtuff is so well organized that you even have a container specific for TIME stuff!
Did someone just eat some of your card for lunch?
ReplyDeleteHugs Mrs a.
Love this watercolor! The blocks look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow--that block background stamp is really neat & I love the effect with the watercoloring--gorgeous, Darnell!
ReplyDeleteCool technique and love the look of the mosaic, Darnell!
ReplyDeleteI love the blocks of colour you have used here in lovely muted shades Darnell, and perhaps the tearing is a bit severe, but we cannot knock your inventiveness. The timepiece and sentiment finish it perfectly. x
ReplyDeleteOh, Darnell, I am in love with your card. I am so taking this when I finish the stencil one. I am on Day 2. Wow on your watch and how you tore the bottom!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous colours, Darnell ... the fading out watercolour block background is just lovely! Hugs, Anita :)
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell, I'm reading this in a train and your post made my travels a whole lot more fun! You are hilarious!! Torn or not, your card is really lovely. The colors look amazing. Thanks for taking TIME OUT and joining our challenge again! xxx
