A site for my handmade cards, accompanied by my photos and written meanderings which are occasionally witty, often tongue-in-cheek, and rarely profound. Beginning in June 2013, you'll also see lots of NBUS, which is an acronym I coined for Never-Before-Used-Schtuff. Note: my Privacy Policy can be found at a tab below and you can find my NBUS Challenge online. I hope you'll join in the fun there! Thanks for coming by! Have a beverage and enjoy!

Let Love Shine

Happy Saturday Night and Sunday Funday First Fay of February for some of you!

The month of love is upon us and hearts are filling the Blogways and Byways of the Intertube and the challenges, so I'm joining in.
I have for you today a golden delicious Valentine made from a white card base, overlain with a leaf of white card stock covered in the finest Belgium vellum inlaid with flecks of gold, which are heart-shaped and rubbed to a fine gilded finish. Over that you will find a wooden veneer declaration of love which has been hand-rubbed in Brilliant gold ink.
As a garnish, the chef has prepared a Lil' Inker triple-butterflied embellishment made from imported sheets of stitched Aladdin gold, topped with a trio of miniature pearls from the rarest oysters found at Riec-sur-Belon. "Heureux regardant."

Can you tell I've been watching Top Chef?!

Speaking of which, are you watching The Great British Baking Show? Oh, crumpets and jam, I LOVE that show! All they do is bake! You do get to know the bakers as the episodes go on, but only on the surface. It's a real reality show which portrays the actual reality of baking and the frustrations of baking, not the loves, hates, miseries, and bickerings of the contestants. Don't get me wrong, I watch all those horrid reality shows, too, but this one is SUCH a breath of fresh air.

The only downside is that you'd better not have any breads, tarts, tortes, or desserts on hand in your house because you WILL eat them after you watch this show!

~~ Okay, where was I was ...

Society of Stampaholics Card Chain

I also wanted to share with you that I took part in the Card Chain at Society of Stampaholics for the month of January and the reveal is Sunday, the 1st. To participate in the card chain each month, you just sign up and you are guaranteed one piece of Happy Mail every month! What a fun idea!
SOS-Blinkie-0612
Here is the card I made.
The card base for this card is glossy card stock embossed with butterflies. I die cut the column of hearts in two colors using the Memory Box "Twirled Heart Border" die, using one color for the frame and one for the inlay. I added the die cut sediment from the Paper Smooches "Love Die," also die cut in two different colors. Next, I scored lines above and below the sediment and on each side of the column of hearts and added some dotty bling. QACAS!

To participate in the Society challenge, you send your card to the person in front of you in the sign-up and it turned out the person in front of me for January was my bloggie friend Greta of GG Creations! Lots of times the person in front of you is a stranger to you, so it's a great way to make new friends! I hope that you'll check it out and join in!

New Friends Corner

I'm pickled tink to welcome five more new friends for you to meet!

Mary of Dolly Bee's Snippets of Life. Mary has been blogging since 2011. As the title of her blog indicates, Mary shares snippets of her life and photography, as well as her really extraordinary scrapbook layouts. I mean, extraordinary! I haven't quite worked out yet why the name of her blog doesn't match her name, but I'm sure there is a story there. Just like I'm sure that you will enjoy your visit to her!

Christi Conley of Art Without Anxiety. Christi has been blogging since March 2013. She loves adorning her pretty card designs and makes amazing 3D projects! I love the title of Christi's blog except that she has been having some anxiety since my visit advising her that I cannot comment on her lovely creations because I'm not a Google+ member. Which is just not right, so I'm asking for your help. Christi has both types of follower buttons, so that part is great, but her "comments" under "Layouts" is different than mine (non-Google+) so I am at a loss how to help her. I know lots of you have both follower buttons on your blogs and I AM able to comment even though I'm not a Google+ member. If you know how you can help Christi fix her blog, she would be most grateful ~ and so would I and her other readers who presently can't leave her comments. Thank you!

Elizabeth Sarkisyan of Create for Family and Friends, Another fabulous blog name. Elizabeth has been blogging since April 2010. Elizabeth's cards often showcase children or critters or sparkle and shine. They are always bright and cheerful and always colored magnificently! She is a challenge award winner and she has lots of wonderful inspiration to show you!

 Ksenija Rizova of Sweet Kolbylkin. Ksenija is from Russia and she has been blogging since 2013. She has a wide range of talent and more than one blog to enchant you with her beautiful works of art. She also provides excellent photo tutorials for how-tos, which is always welcome to the rest of us. I know you will be inspired by Ksenija!

Lisa of This Sweet Madness. Lisa has been blogging since 2011. She is an avid challenge player and has won many awards for her fun card art! Lisa is on many design teams and one-half of a mother-daughter card business. I think you will find Lisa to be enthusiastic and her cards are all about fun, bright colors, and creative designs!

Joy to the World!

Welcome to Christmas All Year Long!

Unfortunately, it has taken me until almost the last day of January (already it's nearly the last day of January!) to make a Christmas card. At this rate, I'll have eleven cards made by December. Big whoop. But that's okay, next week starts another month and I'll try to do more better.

What counts is that I made one, right?! And here tis:
I had a go at this week's Merry Monday Christmas Card Challenge. The theme is "Carolers/Music." I don't have any carolers, as such. I first tried to use a critter and Hammy tried to manipulate him into singing "Joy to the World." Sadly, the critter ended up looking like he was about to be ill, so I abandoned all hope for him. At which point, the hamster critter went off in a sulk.

(Did you know that sulks are making a comeback now that so many taxi companies are going out of business?)

So instead of a critter, I found an old wooden stamp by All Night Media with an adorable elf standing amid a pile of packages he's been wrapping. He looks as if he is saying, "Wah-Lah!" as the last gift is wrapped. I stamped him, colored him with colored pencils, and then painted him all over with WOS. He giggled like a school girl. He was then given a singing mouth, a fussy cut, and popped up on the world, whee! The world is an MFT die given to me by a bloggie friend. I cut it out in blue and white and conjoined them. The sediment is by Denami Design, heat embossed with ruby red Stampendous e/p.

Wah-Lah!

I'm also entering my card in:
  • "Randolph Day" ~ oh, how funny, can you imagine a "Randolph" day?! I mean "Rudolph Day," silly me. Rudolph Day, as you may have guessed, is a Christmas card challenge. The reins of Rudolph Day have been passed this year from Sarn to Maureen over at Scraps of Life by Scrappy Mo. The challenge only runs from the 25th day of each month to the last day of each month. I hope you check it out.
  • Addicted to CAS is back from holiday break (YAY!) with a new code word: "WORLD."
  • Christmas Card Challenges, where the theme is "Anything Goes"
  • Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge, which is "Anything Goes."

If you click on the challenge links, you will find the details on rules, sponsors, and prizes. And don't forget you'll find tons of inspiration provided to you by the Design Teams and Guest Designers!

New Friends Corner

Please help me welcome five more new friends to the Playhouse!

Ruby of Welcome to Ribenaruby's Blog! Ruby has been blogging since 2008! Ruby's love for paper started when she was a little girl living next door to a paper factory and she and her friend used to collect off-cuts of paper from there. Lucky girl! Words aren't really necessary when someone has had a creative blog as long as Ruby has! You know that you will find hours and hours and hours of fantastic inspiration when you visit!

Susangail Powell of Creating With Susan. Susan has been blogging since the very end of December 2013. She loves to enter challenges and she's received some well-deserved awards in return. In addition to cards, Susan enjoys making 3D projects, scrapbooks, and mini-albums. I love Susan's design process with her very CAS style and her wonderful execution!

Sandy Allnock of Sandy Allnock. You are getting a wealth of knowledge and inspiration in the New Friends Corner today as Sandy is another long-time blogger since 2007! I'm sure most of you are already familiar with Sandy through her beautiful works of art, her classes, and her own digital stamp designs!

Nelleke of Farmer Blog. Nelleke has been blogging since 2012. She is the mother of five and grandmother of three boys. As the grandmother of two boys, I know how much fun that is! Nelleke loves having her own craft room to make her wonderful creations. She also loves playing in challenges for inspiration and she has received many well-deserved honors.

Yolanda Garrido of Scrapping Time. Yolanda has only been blogging since 2013, but you would think she had been doing it for years longer. She is a multi-award winner in challenges and she is on several design teams. You will find no end of inspiration from Yolanda's spectacular works of art and tutorials!

Thank you for joining, ladies, and welcome to the Playhouse!

Thank you for being a friend.

Hello, there!

Here's the thank you card I made you for yesterday's post.
The base card is white. I die cut two flag banners using my MFT Die-namics Fishtail Flags die. One banner was cut using a snippet of ancient black and white polka-dottie patterned paper and the other was cut from a snippet of clear and black polka-dottie acetate. I believe the acetate is from SU.

The image is by Stamping Bella "Bench Buddies." After stamping I used a stitched circle die from Li'l Inkers to cut out the focus pocus. I also cut one in black and offset it behind the white to create a shadow. The sediment is masked from an ancient Diamonds "Girl Friends" image and stamped in SU Bermuda Bay. The bling is from Queen & Co.

Challenges

Not only was the theme inspired by my appreciation for your participation in regulation NBUS deeply felt upon the cessation and followed by the inhalation of libation ~ SLAP! Sorry. Hammy was running on his wheel.

Like I was saying, I was inspired by:
  1. The sketch at Less Is More (below).
  2. The cue card word at CASology which is "Friend."
  3. The theme at Pixie's Snippets Playground which is to use your "Snippets."
  4. The theme at Shopping Our Stash which is "Not Your Normal Paper." (Dotted acetate.)
  5. The theme at Craft Stamper Take It Make It Challenge which is "Take a Stamp."
We'd love you to display our banner

New Friends Corner

It's lovely to introduce more new friends to you today! I hope you'll visit them, introduce yourself, and continue the circle of friendship across Blogland!

Richard Breaks of That's MISTER Cardmaker, to you! Richard started blogging in 2011. It's always a joy to see what Richard has created. His works of art are no doubt familiar to you as Richard enters challenges, wins recognition, and serves on design teams throughout Blogland. He recently posted a couple of 2015 calendars that literally will make you gasp!

Pooja of Reusing Cards & Quilling. Pooja has been blogging since 2012. She lives in India and is a software engineer. As you can tell from the title, in her spare time Pooja makes cards and quills. The best way to get to know her is to click on the "About Me" tab where she does a great introduction of herself and her love of reusing/recycling, which is very inspirational. And you won't believe the 3D projects and fold cards she makes, often with very detailed photos and instructions!

Donna of Design by Donna. Donna has been blogging since 2010. Her profile simply says, "Loving retirement, it gives me more time to craft." Amen, sister! Donna is a familiar figure in many of the challenges that I frequent, especially sketch challenges. I always love her interpretations and the way she inspires me to stay alert to my surroundings for design ideas!

Christine Hyde of CndnStamper on Splitcoast Stampers. Cindy has had a gallery at Splitcoast since 2008 and she has 1267 posts for you to click through and be utterly inspired by! You might want to put a visit to Christine on the top of your "To Do" list for the next rainy day!

Melissa Lane of honeybeelane. Melissa has one of those blogs that you open and your jaw hits the keyboard. You just have to see it and her outstanding works of art! She is another brand-spanking-new blogger who started blogging just this month! You would never know it from her professionalism, her style, her incredibly beautiful cards, and those awards already flanking her side bar! Please do yourself a favor and go meet Melissa. Show her what a wonderful and supportive community we are!

Thank you for joining, ladies and gentleman, and welcome to the Playhouse!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

I'm sure you won't be surprised to learn that because of my NBUS challenge, I have gotten dreadfully far behind in my normal visiting and commenting on your blogs. I feel badly about that because returning a visit or commenting is not a chore or a job for me. Some of you kindly tell me I don't need to return a comment, but that's just not how I roll. I think of making cards and writing my posts as two legs of my blog journey stool and visiting/commenting is the third leg. For me, that makes it equally important and necessary. And joyful!

However, at this moment, in order for me to keep from burning out, which I'm sure you don't want, I realize that I need to simply file my inbox of hundreds of comments awaiting replies. Sometimes you just have to start over from scratch, right? Today, I'm starting over from scratch.

So ...
  • If you left me a comment and I have not responded, please comment here.
  • If you asked me a question and I did not answer, please ask me again.
  • If there is a particular past blog post or creation of yours that you wanted me to see, please let me know.  (darnell dot knauss at gmail dot com.)
Otherwise, I'm going to assume you understand and I appreciate that! Remember, if you ever feel like I haven't visited you in quite a while, all you need to do is leave me a comment and I'll return the flavor.

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy.  LITS!*

And thank you for being a friend!

NBUS Challenge #3 Winners!

Go ahead, you don't need to stop for small talk. Scroll down and see if your name is there! Then scroll back up, please, and follow me back down. If you make it all the way through, there will be cake and adult beverages. Well, I should hope so!

Thank you!

Words, for once, fail me. It's impossible to express how appreciative and overwhelmed and, yes, even stunned I am by your support, enthusiasm, and participation in this challenge! The final number was 557!

I know there were several entries thanks to the wonderful collaboration and guest designing I did over at CASology, but honestly, lovely people, how are we ever going to top THAT?!! In the end, I shuffled the letters in NBUS and wore my fingers to NUBS (haha) visiting and commenting on all your fabulous entries. Each and every visit was a pleasure! If I missed you by some chance known affectionately as "old age," please let me know. It was not intentional!

Winners!

Of course, you know I could never personally pick the winners because I think all of your entries are winners ~ truly, I do! Plus, I've become personal friends with so many of you that it would be very hard not to wear my partials. So, I put Hammy to work running the random number generator thingie to choose the winners. Some numbers had to be redrawn because the number landed on those of you playing just for fun.

As you know, when the entries went to 200, I doubled the prizes from five $25 gift cards to ten! Well, it seemed only fair, then, to do the same thing when the entries went to 400. I didn't say anything at the time because I didn't want people coming out of the woodwork ~ I wonder, is that an international expression? ~ who didn't really want to follow me.

So ... SURPRISE! There are twenty $25 gift cards being awarded! Without further a dew, here are the random twenty winners in Alpha Betty order!

Aileen Ryan ~ Flickr Gallery (460)
Anita in France ~ My Papercraft World (253)
Barbara Roe ~ Love to Colour (540)

Carol Steedman ~ Inky Fingers (247)
Christine Smith ~ Chris's Ramblings (434)
Cindy Beach ~ Stamps, Paper, and Ink (186)
Conil ~ Which Craft? (375)
Ionabunny ~ Crafty Nomad (38)
Gerrina ~ Gerrina's Creative World (504)
Helen ~ Handmade Cards by Helen (274)
Janis in ID ~ Her Peaceful Garden (3)
Julia Aston ~ Create With Me (362)
Linda ~ Life in the Craft Lane (323)
Michelle ~ Amusing Michelle (223)
Nancy Littrell ~ Splitcoast Stampers Gallery (147)
Rahmat ~ Cards and Cooking Corner (170)
Ros Crawford ~ Mikey's Mom (465)

Congratulations from me and Hammy! Please email me at darnell dot knauss at gmail dot com.

Commenting

I want to acknowledge and thank those of you who made a special effort to visit and comment on the other entries in the challenge! You know how much I appreciate that! You can always access any of the NBUS challenge galleries via the tab at the top of my blog or via my Pinterest boards. And, of course, there is no time limit on when you can pop in and visit any of the card artists you find in the galleries!

Prize Details

Winners, you are free to chose any domestic company for your prize, however, I am recommending that you choose Stamplorations for this challenge. They have great product and great shipping rates.

AND!

If you do choose to receive Stamplorations as your gift card from me, the owner Shery has generously offered to increase your prize by adding two free ARTplorations stencils of your choice to your order!! Thank you so much, Shery!

~~~
Okay, phew, I think that's another challenge put to bed! One thing is abundantly clear: we all have NBUS and we all love being encouraged to use it!
Oh, whoa, hold up, there's one more silly bit:
"How Do You Pronounce It?"
I often get asked how I pronounce NBUS. Well, as I've said many times, if I'd known NBUS would take off the way it has, I certainly would have chosen a more mouth-friendly aaackronym! She shurgs. Typo on purpose.
Here's how I pronounce it. Do you remember as a kid doing a kind of puzzle that was called a rebus? Pronounced ree-bus. It means a picture without words. Or it can be words with pictures replacing words here and there. In wee school, we'd have puzzles made up of three or four pictures and we had to say what the puzzle meant.
Like a picture of a school bus + a kid + a school building = riding the bus to school.
Or like a picture of a greeting card + a playhouse + a hamster + a wodka = Darnell's crafting.
So I pronounce it like rebus, only with an n, so nee-bus.
I know there are some of you who say it like it's two words: a capital letter N followed by a bus. N. Bus.
Some of you have told me you pronounce it as Naw-bus. Others say Nay-bus.
You say tomayto, I say tomahto. Well, actually, I say tomayto.
Who cares, right? You say it however you like! The important thing is that you are all on the NBUS bus! Now we are all using our products, which is the goal, so when your family and friends ask you what you're working on, you can just shurg and say, "Oh, you know, I'm Busy Using Schtuff!"
~~~

I actually made you a card, but this is already way too long, so I'll be back with it in a day or two.

In the meantime, enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy.  LITS!*

Old Valentines / New Friends

Never-Before-Used-Schtuff (Stamps, Dies, EFs, etc.)Hi there!

There will only be about twelve hours left in the NBUS Challenge #3 when this post goes live, so if you were thinking about entering, or entering again (up to three times), you had better scoot your hiney into gear!! Click HERE.

Once the challenge closes, I'll be encased in a hermitically sealed chamber with Dr. and Mrs. Condom Dot Ram ~ oh, oops, I mean Random Dot Com ~ oh, oops, I mean Random Dot Org and Hammy the Hamster. We will be misting over 540 pieces of paper with your names written on them with StazOn ink. We will then toss them against the wall one-by-one and see which names stick. Winner! Over here! Winner!

I'll be back with that list of winners in my next post, which will be no later than noon PST on Sunday, January 25, 2015. I just realized that Virginia announces her monthly challenge winners on the 25th of the month, so that coincides this time with my challenge. It should be an exciting day with so many of you entering both of our challenges! Oh, also, the PTI monthly challenge is on the 25th and there's prolly lots of other fun schtuff going on, too! We might break the internet!

Of course, I'll thank you properly in the winners post, but I can't post this in the between time without also saying thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who entered!! To say I went over the whelmed point about 300 entries ago is an understatement!

~~~
Today, for inspiration, I'd like to reshare a few Valentines that I made and posted in previous years and also introduce you to some of the talented new friends who have found the Playhouse.
Enjoy!
