A happy hump day hello!
If there is one thing I've enjoyed fondling since my love affair with paper began back in ought-2, it's vellum. I made so many cards using painted vellum, it's not funny and I spent hours on the console being consoled when they stopped making that stuff. Sniff. Oh, stop, I still have some in my stash, so you'll be seeing it again.
Needless to say, I am delighted to see vellum being "discovered" all over Bloggerville right now. One wonderful blog talking about it this week is the Papertrey Ink Make It Monday challenge, where Lizzie shows us how to soften patterns with vellum layovers.
Here is my card Numeruno:
I pretty much CASEd Lizzie's card using one of the PTI word text dies. Lizzie used "Mom" and I used "Birthday."
I love this sweet NBUS balloon paper from SU that I used for my patterned background. I popped my vellum focus pocus up on foam stilts like Lizzie did and I even tossed in some matching sequints to make mine a shaker card. Well, it turns out some vellum not only softens patterns, they make sequins invisible. So, not wanting to waste them, I sprung them to use another day when I'll use one of my lighter weight vellum sheets that are easier to see through.
Aside note: I used a transfer sheet (basically a large Xyron sheet) on the back of the text block die cut which applies adhesive. That's all fine and good, but even after lots of burnishing with a sheet of nonstick paper and my pants (and a lot of picknitting), there are still little boogers of adhesive stuck to the letters. I don't like that and I wonder if you have any secret remedy for it?
I mean beside wodka which does make them less noticeable.
My card numerdos:
Okay, then. Now we're talkin'. If that were a party invite, would you be rearranging your calendar to attend? Me, too.
I sponged distress inks using my NBUS Winnie & Walter "Flash" stencil in spun sugar, spiced marmalade, shabby shutters, mustard seed, and broken china. Served with a Sizzer Salad and crusty bread. The small star is from GKW, stamped in SU almost amethyst. The sediment is a NBUS die, also from W&W, called "The Big, the Bold, the Party," which I inlaid into my vellum banner. The banner is cut using an MFT die.
Wait. What? You inlaid in vellum? Thin, flimsy, pesky vellum? How you did that?
Well, to be fair, it was Hammy's idea. He really loves vellum, too, and we hadn't tried inlaying with it before. It works like normal diecut inlays. I first ran the die and clear vellum through the BS and carefully removed the diecut. I next ran the die and pink vellum through and removed the diecut.
Then I laid a piece of clear packing tape behind the negative space on the clear vellum. It's a nice width so it's great for making a banner and it gave my diecute some adhesive to stick to as it nestled back into the negative space. Plus, it's a great way to add a little stiffness to the banner without obscuring the view underneath.
It did work very well, so high tens to the hamster. Gotta love that guy.

Backyard Busyness
I'll leave you with the latest news from the wild kingdom that is the Playhouse backyard. Just as Rufous took off (yes, he's gone for sure), this little guy appeared. He's just one of dozens of house finches that we see every day, but the Mister had me come running (okay, waddling) with the camera when he saw this one yesterday:
Much to our surprise he took off with no apparent problems! Go him! Flying without a tail makes steering difficult, but thankfully tail feathers do grow back fairly quickly.
~~~
~~~
Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy. LITS!*
As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to leave a comment and/or join as a follower! Please let me know you came by, so I can return the flavor!

Hi Darnell, both of your cards are so colorful and pretty! You have surely made the CASE your own and they totally rock! Thanks for mentioning me in your post. It's an honor and a great way to bond with crafters aroung blog-land. :)
That Birdie is so adorable and could fly without a tail is a magic in itself :)
Cya then,
Suchi xx
Gorgeous and bright cards, fab use of vellum, love the die cut vellum. Thanks for joining ATSM
Hi Darnell, what beautiful, bright and sunshiney cards and great use of vellum! Love the little birdie too, bless! Sorry I've not born here so much lately, once more work/life has overtaken blogging! Hugs Carole Z X
What fabulous vellum masterpieces Darnell. Love them!!!
Blessings
Maxine
Two lovely cards Darnell love the vibrant sploshes on your first one and love the little bit of bling on your 2nd...
Just love reading about your wildlife in your garden...
Anne
I've never been able to master vellum :-( Maybe one day :-P
Lovely cards. So nice to see bright ones.
That little bird must have had a lucky escape.
Hope you have a good day. Sue
Beautiful!!! Those little adhesive boogers is one reason I don't use the Xyron as much as I'd like - I have a booger eraser that works fairly well (can't recall where I got it from) but, hopefully, someone will have a better answer! Vellum - I happen to have a TON of it - different patterns, weights, colors ~ hmmm - maybe a package should be on it's way to you?? Hugs!!! Christi
Awesome cards, Darnell...loving this technique a lot! Especially love the first card with the text block: birthday! the vellum sure does soften things yet allows color to show through! Thanks for sharing your bird pictures too!
I love both your cards but the star bursts the best. Love love your inlaid die cut on the vellum. Wonderful colours. Now I looked and looked and no matter how hard I looked I could not see a heart on the party card. Am i going blind as well as deaf or maybe its just me.
What a clever idea to use the packing tape to do an inlaid die! Love the end result. On the top card, I bought some double sided adhesive. For the more intricate dies it seems to help. Scrapbook Adhesives sells it. Love how the vellum softens the vibrant colors. Gorgeous cards Darnell.
Hi Darnell,
both cards are really really wonderful. I love the Vellum as a special card too.
Best regards, Synnöve
Beautiful cards Darnell! I've always loved the softness that vellum gives to a card, but struggled with attaching it. I also saw the techniques you mentioned from Lizzie and thought I'd have a go too - great minds, and all that - but using clear packing tape behind was truly inspired and I now regret- only recently - giving mine away . . . Oh, well, off to buy another roll!! Nearly forgot, thanks for the heads up about the FMS shout out, the linky wasn't showing them when I popped over! Have a lovely day/evening! Hazel xx
You make vellum sound so sexy! Ha, Ha! Two great uses of the stuff!
You always create something special
love it
hugs Tamara
I may or may not have a collection of patterned vellum. Yes, I'm that old.
I love what you've done here, and I plan to CASE you. You've been warned.
I continue to find it fascinating that everything comes round to popularity again. I don't think it's bad at all, just fascinating. And gives us a chance to try it out again. Love your vellum cards, Darnell! On adhesive boogers. What I have done was take an embossing tool with a small ball and run it along the edge of the cut out before removing it from the backing piece. That got a lot, but if there was more, I'd do the same when it was off the backing piece and I was holding it. Not sure if this will help you. Oh my goodness, what a sight that must have been for the poor little bird. Good for him for still being able to fly. Thanks for sharing. Sorry for such a long reply!
Vellum. What's not to love?!?!?
I adore your two cards with these great vellum techniques Darnell. I have to admit vellum is something I don't use a lot but it looks very pretty so must remedy that. I use an awful lot of photo glue which rubs off the card and doesn't mark but sometimes even that is difficult to remove from little nooks and crannies. I love your photo of the cute finch minus his tail feathers. Perhaps he had a fracas with a cat and left his tail behind whilst escaping! x
Gorgeous card, I love the colours. I have a stash of Vellum as well, I used it for dry embossing when I first started making cards(with templates, light box and stylus, very relaxing). I hope you are doing well. Hugs, Shirleyxx
Your cards are genius!! I love the clever use of the party die! Your cards couldn't be happier than this, the colors brighten anyones day. Love your "backyard business", too!
I'm totally with you Darnell. I love vellum and I'm happy that it might be making a comeback. Your card is so fun and festive.
Love your bright and beautiful cards. That inlay in vellum is so creative. I need to get out the vellum and play with it.
love the effect of the vellum - thanks for sharing your colorful birthday cards at ATSM this week
(Taking a minute to visit you today...) First...FREAKIN' BRILLIANT to use packing tape!!!!! NO, REALLY!!!!! YOU are the mostest cleverest, geniusest crafter ever. All of the card making blogland will be doing this now. DANG! Butter my butt and call me a biscuit! You've made my brain go all pingy, and I can't craft for a few more days yet, dagnabbit!!!! Next, your cards are stunners. LOVE them. Especially #2, with your fantabby technique. Bright, happy, and yes, I'd go to a party in a heartbeat if I were to get an invite like that! Awesome. Gotta run, but wanted to stop by for a sec. Calla me. Bev
Inlaid vellum! What a clever way to handle it (that Hammy is a wonderful crafting partner!)
If ever I'm feeling the slightest bit down, which doesn't happen very often thank goodness, I just have to come visit your blog to see what you've been up to. Besides making two fabulous cards you've taught us how to burnish with our pants (LOL), how vellum makes sequins invisible and to use packing tape for inlaying on vellum. So much fun!
Love both your cards Darnell, and I see no "boogers" on the first one! I used a light weight vellum on my card and added sequins and they show through just fine...maybe your vellum was a heavier weight one? Thanks again for my morning chuckle...your posts ALWAYS make me smile! Have a great day! Love ya!! :0)
Fabulous cards Darnell and I think your inlaid vellum is genius and I'm sure I'll be seeing it all over blogland soon! The stencilled card is wonderful and I had to enlarge it to get a closer look at your inlay, but I couldn't see the amethyst heart so I must have hit the wodka too early again.
Love your birdie photo and what a trooper he is to be able to adjust his flying technique to manage without his tail. Now you weren't after some feathers for a card were you??? lol!
Hugs my friend.
Carol xx
H
Love these! Yes LOVE. Especially the inlaid vellum. Thank you for patiently and perfectly giving out your paper tricks. Can't wait to try!
PS, love your wildlife photos!
Packing tape...brilliance! Truly brilliance...but how did the die turn blue?
I love vellum especially the heavier weight stuff for the softening effect.
Your cards are both lovely...oh and for the extra adhesive...an eraser (not that brownish crumbly kind a white one or a pink one, or a rubber one)...comes right off.
Fabulous use of the vellum Darnell...must look some out and give it a try. Carol x
OMG! OMG OMG! Inlaid vellum. Now why couldn't I think of that? And just look at how fab-u-lous it looks. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! (We do everything in threes around here.) Genius that you are. LOOOOVE both cards. So festive. BTW, hate those boogers, too.
Darnell, your cards are so beautifully festive! I love both of your uses with vellum... I had never seen inlaid vellum before! Amazing. :o) I love the bright colors and backgrounds. Gorgeous work as always, my precious friend! I am so thankful for you. :o) Have a blessed day!
Hugs and blessings,
Karen
Both your cards are great Darnell....I use Parchment a lot and your tip about the clear tape over an aperture is great - Thanks!! I am loving colouring at the moment and have stamped some Pansies onto white P/Ment will Blog in a couple of days...Have a great week over the Pond...Barbara x
Using vellum on the card is a great idea, dear Darnell. It makes the card more "soft". I love both of your cards. The stars for the background on the second one are superb. Thank you for reminding me to search for vellum in my stash. :-)
Hugs, Sonja
High tens to Hammy!! Your inlay technique looks amazing!! Both of your projects are absolutely gorgeous!! I love how you used the vellum and the fabulous colors!! I love vellum, too, and when I found pink vellum - I fell in love all over again!! Have a great day :)
Lisa
A Mermaid's Crafts
great tipp! love your birthday card with the fun paper with all the balloons!
Awesome cards, Darnell! And what a sweet little birdie!
Gorgeous cards. I think I better look for my vellum now too. You have inspired me.
Oh I absolutely love both cards and need to case the first one for this weekend!! Hugs, Harriet
Your cards are beautiful! So bright and pretty. I just love the vellum you used. Amazing stuff!
Hammy is on a roll, hopefully not stuck to the tape roll tho. I love the idea of inlaid vellum, off to have a play your card is gorgeously inspiring. I use my ek success powder to make the shouldn't be sticky there sticky bit less sticky then picknit them off. Patience is required as it sometimes takes a few goes but they do bug me... and I like the picknitting, nearly as good as popping out the die bits
LOVE both of your cards, Darnell! Awesome job!
Two brilliant cards and well done you on your love of vellum, I can not get to grips with it, it seems misbehave very badly in my hands.
Kath x
Oh the bright and cheerful colors. Honestly I have not used vellum, I have some, but have not used it. I think I will start with embossing a word and laying it over the colored paper.
Love them birdies, keep the photos coming.
Well as I always say, wodka makes the world go round! :) I'm not sure how to get the boogers off either. But I do know how amazing your super cute party colors look on these cards! And give hammy a high twenty for that inventive way to inlay vellum.
Wow Darnell, fabulous use of the vellum (not something I use much, so glad there is a revival), I may have a go at this now too! That's a great tip with the packing tape too - Hammy done good!
I really do hope that little bird will be shaking his tail feathers soon! Big hugs, Annie xx
Now THESE are some happy cards!! I LOVE the flash stamp on the second. Yes, I would go to that party too!! Poor little bird, hope his tail feathers grow back soon :(
Such wonderful cards! Love all the inspiratioN!
Your whole post is super! Love both of your cards and 'yes' to the party invite!
Interesting bird pics, too!
Both your cards are fabulous! Your use of vellum is brilliant and I love the little bird, I hope his tail feathers come back soon! xxx
So beautiful <3
Such a cute card. Love your "flash" stencil and all of that gorgeous color. I just bought your sentiment die...love the font. Genius of you to inlay it in the vellum. Thanks for joining us at Just Us Girls!
Love your balloons Darnell, adorable card!
Another vellum-lover here. :) Also a lover of these two cards. I will definitely be trying inlaid die-cutting with mine!
Lovely cards. I always love the hint of color that shows through the vellum.
We never thought to use an inlay with vellum! Very clever! Two great-looking cards!
Both your cards are fabulous! I especially like the second one and how you did such a great job with the vellum inlay! High Fives to you!
Nice cards Darnell, I must dig out my vellum! Thanks for visiting and your lovely comment on my NBUS entry.
I like the tailess bird, cute!
Cazzy x
Both cards are so fun and festive! Love how you used the vellum!
Poor birdie! I believe there is a mad cat with some feathers in his mouth somewhere!
Two very fun cards. Love both of these colorful beauties!
Thanks for the info on how you did this Darnell!! Love both cards a bunch!! Glad you joined the girls and I at JUGS too! Love the bird photos...it's amazing he can still steer ...lol
I love your cards and after the A to Z is done I want to get back to crafting and using vellum-you inspired me. I have to reread how you inlaid that pretty blue writing in vellum. It does soften this up. Oh the poor little tyke with no tail...I shall call him Gismo
Terrific post and if you get any other bits of info on how to clean up those text dies, I cannot wait to read them. I really glad you added the extra photos on your inlaid vellum, I needed the visual to appreciate that more. TFS!!!! hugs, K
VaVa Voom for the way you have used vellum!! It is absolutely fantastic - now I want to go and dig my vellum out and try these techniques - you truy shine in this post and just holy cow - AMAZEBALLS super cool!! I hope you have a wonderful night!!!
Great cards with fun uses of vellum today! I just love the one with the big splatters of color! It screams PARTYYY!!! Looks like your fine feathered friend worked his little tail off! Sowwy, couldn't resist :)
Hi Darnell! Love these colourful beauties! I loved hearing about your vellum stash ( I have one too from over the years as I love the stuff) and how you created with it today! Love the inlay word die...in vellum...why have I not thought of that...you are a genius!
Thanks for the nature update :)
Two gorgeous cards.
You and hammy are so clever and inspiring.
The finch is a great little guy.
Fabulous cards, Darnell! And genius idea to do inlaid vellum - it looks amazing against that gorgeous background.
Wow, Darnell! These are super. Totally goes to PIN & CASE! Also, I got your card in the mail yesterday! Thanks so much. If you want to hear an update on me please head over to my CASology blog post for this week's challenge and look for the P.P.S. at the bottom. Thanks again. I really appreciate the happy mail!
Both cards are fab Darnell! Also you're quite the wildlife photographer. That's an awesome little bird...
Love both of your cards ... Very clever of Hammy to suggest the inlaid die technique ... Course it's even more clever of you to do it!
Oh that sweet little bird ... Thank goodness he can still fly ...
Have a lovely day!
Does Hammy have a brother, sister or cousin? I sure could use some of that good help! I can't help with the boogers but would like to know a remedy. I'm loving the bright, fun colors and I'm ready to party for sure! Wonder how your little finch lost his tail feathers. Sure glad the rest of him stayed intact! I hate finding chunks of feathers in the yard. Pesky hawks!
Darnell, I absolutely love these! The vellum works so well xxx
These are real party-cards! Love all the colours and the vellum looks great on both! Always glad to see jet another way to use it! Hugs, Gerrina
Hi Dippy - what beautiful cards, love them both. Regarding your stick situation (!!!) I used to use the xyron sheets but also found they left a residue which was almost impossible to get off and ruined all the hard work making the card. Then someone invented Stick It! You can get it through Ken Oliver in the States - check out his YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ43O4VGKLg - fabulous stuff and it really works. Love your braveness with the vellum, can't believe you inlaid that die cut, it looks amazing. BTW something nice arrived yesterday but keeping it safe til Saturday.
Hugs.
Karendipity xxx
Wow, what fun, festive and colorful cards Auntie! I know about those glue buggers and they can be a pain in the butt. lol Next time go around whatever you put Xyron on with a stylus-you are outlining basically. Then when you pull off the backer sheet, there shouldn't be any of those glue buggers. But for your card now, take an adhesive remover to it. That should take off all those little glue buggers that want to hang around. Oh that sweet birdie, it's not nice to not have a tail! But lucky for him they do grow back. He is just so sweet looking! Hugs, Brenda
Two really fabulous designs Darnell!! I especially love your colorful splashes with your vellum sentiment!! Always a pleasure to see your creations over at ATSM my friend!! HUGS
Darnell your cards are gorgeous, love how you used the vellum. That bird photo is just amazing, you have an eye for that too I see.
Darnell love your beautiful cards and you rocked the vellum! So many challenges that you played perfectly!
Simply amazing!
Darnell,
I use an adhesive eraser which works very well.

Two fabulous and colourful cards Dolly. Love how the vellum softens the colours underneath. Cool effect.
And love the idea of inlaid vellum ... AWESOME!! Lolly xx
Your cards are fantastic, Darnell! Love the party feel to both. Love how you did the inlaid die cut with the vellum. Great idea! Glad to see you over at Ink again. :-). Hugs!
Gorgeous symphonies of colour Darnell. Thanks to Hammy for the idea with the vellum inlay - it's lovely!!!
Oh you are brave playing with vellum, though I do love it. I am not sure if I would fiddleandfaff with it as you have!!
Great cards though.
Hugs
xx
If this keeps up Hammy will have to have his own blog to share his creations. I love vellum too and that soft, elegant look it gives. I love that you inlaid it, what a great idea. I would have been afraid to try that and it came out so pretty. Not being able to shake his tail feathers didn't seem to slow the bird down.
These are fantastic Darnell, love working with vellum, and am glad it is making it's way back......since I still have a stash of it too!
Thanks for the visit and the comment earlier this week. I've been crazy busy and just plain crazy and have been neglecting my blog of late. I hope to slow a bit and get to posting again......grin
Wow Dee what adoreable cards here again.I am a vellum lover too, love the softness it gives to a card.Awww poor litle birdie, I hope his tail feathers come back real soon ;) hugs Viv xx
Thanks for visiting my blog, your cards are great, love the bright colours. Gail xx
I have become a follower of your blog.
Just brilliant what a gorgeous and and thanks for sharing this great technique Love and hugs Carole x
Oh your shaker card is one big party with that wonderful patterned paper balloons! Your second card is amazing too with the bright colors and your creative sentiment on vellum ...brilliant! Hope you have a wonderful weekend Darnell,we should be cooling down ,Dow here. Hugs
Hi Darnell
Fantabulous cards. You can still get vellum over here so you'll need a trip to the UK when you run out.
Cute birdie too, even without his tail, bless him!
Have a great weekend.
Ang x
Two gorgeous cards, Darnell. I love how you've used the vellum over the the patterned paper. I think I have a pack of NBUS vellum somewhere... I think I need to dig it out.
Hope the tail feathers grow quickly on your little visitor! xx
Your love affair with vellum is really working for you, Darnell. I just realized after seeing your birthday cut that the card I made for MIM doesn't have any PTI produce on it. :( Give Hammy a high five for me. Inlaying vellum is a great trick and one I want to try.
Two really GORGEOUS cards, Darnell! I love your inlaid vellum and the beautiful die cuts and stencil you paired with all the bright, fun patterns! You've inspired me to try this out...Thanks!
how did I miss my invite to this party? I'm coming over! These look amazing :)
This is the weirdest thing! When I was walking Bella along the river today, I was thinking about Anita's W&W Rose die-cut card with the pink vellum and wondering about inlaying with vellum itself. Spooky!! I'm only just jumping on the vellum bandwagon and loving it I must say. I love the colours of your first card. Would love one of these large die-cuts in my stash! And you in-laid vellum....well, genius!! Loving that stencil too, such cool patterns. No tail feathers? How odd, maybe they ended up in the mouth of a very perturbed cat??
Vellum-voluptuous indeed, my friend! And guaranteed I'd arrange my itinerary if an invitation like yours arrived! Two stunning cards! I'm vellum-challenged; #can'tfigureouthowtouseit, so I just avoid! I'll sit back and enjoy your crafty genius in wielding it with style and panache (much easier for managing my stress, thank you *grin*). AND....thank you for joining the Inkspirational gallery!
Hugs~c
Not only do I get to see some beautiful eye candy when I visit your blog, but it's also an education. Some tips pertain to stamping and others to life in general. WTG, Darnell
You are amazing and both of your cards are so beautiful and so perfect for anyone's birthday. I love your use of vellum, so pretty!
Brilliant use of vellum with two pretty and fun birthday cards! Thanks for playing along with us at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge!
Vell..um...I gotta say...amazing work pal! I'm sure there will be a whole whack of us digging out our velum...which shouldn't be too hard cuz we likely came across it when we were searching for the colored wire!
Three cheers for Hammie & his incredible idea to use clear packing tape! Two amazing cards - love the bright colors - soooo totally festive!
I had no idea a bird could fly without tail feathers! Can just imagine how p-offed the cat was with nothing more than a few feathers for a pillow!
Two beautiful, HAPPY cards.... and an added bonus-a new technique!!
Clever old Hammy, Darnell ... must be rubbing off from somewhere! What a genius that little guy is to come up with the idea of inlaying vellum ... add that to your packing tape ping and you have seriously awesome ... off to pack for the party! Yummy balloons ... I've tried a Zig two way pen for adhering similar die cuts ... works if it's not to liquidy ... otherwise you can imagine the mess(es)! Hugs & Bisous Bisous, Anita :)
Love how you used the vellum to mute the patterned layer. The flash party card is fab. Hugz
You are so creative, Darnell! Beautiful cards with vellum, which I've loved since the first day I saw it. Indeed it's nice when "trends" are something we know & love--LOL! I'm using Perfect Paper Adhesive for my die cuts (& anything else that needs liquid adhesive) as it dries pretty much invisible & doesn't make a mess on your hands--it's just great! I'm always disappointed when I use my Xyron--same problem you describe--so don't plan to buy any more replacement rolls.
Love the inlaid diecut and would never have thought to try with vellum - thank you for sharing your tip to use the clear packing tape :)
(house guests have left and I am catching up on a couple weeks worth of posts)
I am so happy to report that your first card looks so wonderful in person, and I did not find a single adhesive booger. And I just looked again.
