Encore Mellow Yellow

Hey Gang!

Sorry, I meant to come back a little earlier and play cards with you. What happened was my neighbor needed me to help her with something and in the process, the back door fell off, crashing through the plate glass living room window, sending the other neighbor's dog out into the street and across two other backyards and out of sight, so she took off after him and I went in search of a deep bowl to rescue the goldfish that were now lying somewhere under the living room couch.

Hmm, no, actually I just went out to a lunch that ran longer than I expected. You know how rowdy and long-winded six blue-haired old ladies can get!

So, without further a dew:

Here is the first card, which I made for the "Hello, Sunshine" theme at the always-fabulous Less Is More challenge.
This card has three stamps applied to glossy paper: a NBUS corner sun ray from PTI "Shakers and Sprinkles," a NBUS sediment from SU "Faith in Nature," and sandals from Technique Tuesday "Sunshine."

~~~
Next, while I had my SRM thank you stickers on my desk, I made another thank you card. This one was inspired by the The Card Concept "Frilly and Fabulous" challenge. In addition to the sticker sediment, I used: a NBUS woodgrain stamp from Altenew "Wood Pallet Background," a "Folded Banner" die from Simon Says Stamp, a store-bought blossom from Jessica Swift, a piece of v.o. mesh, and two enamel dots.
~~~

Wait, hold up. We have a bonus card today!

The Mister's gym shorts needed an iron-on patch on the left thigh, just above the hem. (Ancient unsolved mystery: Why is it that all men's shorts rip horizontally right there?) At first, I laughed hysterically when he pointed it out to me, with a fond far-away look in his eyes, as if remembering the early days of our marriage when I did such a thing.

Then he went out of town for a couple of days and I don't know, I must have mist him because I thought I would shock his biscuit by patching them while he was away. So I got into my sewing basket (after taking a few icky minutes to remove all the spider webs) to see if I still had some antique iron-on patches and just look what I found under the bottom tray:

It's a plastic bag which once contained a pair of lady's gloves. Now the package image is yellow, so you might think the bag once contained those heavy rubber washing gloves, but it dinnit because it's a small narrow bag, only large enough to have held a pair of for-real lady's gloves.

I have no idea why I would have this bag in my sewing box as, certainly, the only gloves I've ever worn are the washing-up kind. I can only guess that a couple 30 years ago I heard a tiny voice in my head telling me to keep it for the future when the older, more robust, me would turn it into a shaker card.

I know. Spooky. Who knew there was a hamster up there all those years ago?!
So, naturally, I slid two pieces of acetate into the bag, filled it with sequints, sealed off the top, attached it to a white card, and gave it a matching yellow paper frame. This will go very nicely in The Paper Players CAS Challenge: "Girly Thanks," even though I haven't fingered out yet to whom it will go.

Oh. And those gym shorts? The patch was loving applied after an additional three hours spent looking for my iron. The Mister came home the next day. He wore them that day. And the next day. And the next day. Finally, on day four, I pointed at his leg and made a snarky sweet comment.

"Oh, would you look at that?" he marveled.

Whereupon, I gave him something else to marvel about.

~~~
Speaking of rejoinders, you all made some great comments to the last post. In fact, I was over whelmed by them! I've decided to give a spontaneous little somethin-somethin prize to Brenda of Inkspired to Stamp, who said:
"If you are under whelmed, does that mean your wheel was square or you just didn't finish in the alloted time?"
~~~

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy.  LITS!*  For those of you in the U.S. of A., be safe if you're traveling on this long Memorial Day weekend. Take a pause to remember with thanks all those who serve our country in the military, past and present.

I actually have a pair of ladies gloves on my dresser! Had a light blue pair, but gdd Lizzy wanted them, so I gave them to her. Seriously, you've got a trio of wonders here. Love the sun on the first one. The second one is perfect in every way. But the glove one...totally fav! Miss you. Bev

  9. You had me worried about those goldfish for a minute there! And now I'm wondering what state of mind your younger self was in to know that one day in the future you would turn that glove bag into such a fab creation. Should we never, EVER throw anything away just in case there are inspiration particles lurking in it?

  19. I had to scroll back to see all the pretty cards I've missed for the past few days! Everything looks amazing, and I especially love the mesh today, along with the fun shaker card! What? No picture of your patchwork shorts for the Mr? Oddly enough, my Mr just asked me last week to patch a pair of his jeans! Now if I could just find that beast of a sewing machine........I know it's around here somewhere...........
    Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

  20. Everything about this post is fabulous. From the first story to the patch story to the creation of three fantastic cards. Love the shaker! But that first one is good for me to remember, too. There's been very little sunshine in my usually sunshiney state and it gets me a little blue after a while. Thanks for sharing!

  21. Oh Darnell, I'm rolling with laughter here - I think today's post me have me chuckling for the rest of the day!! I came over to comment on the intriguing shaker card - totally inspired and isn't it amazing what treasures we find lurking in the depths of the sewing box?! Then I see two more fab cards too, both gorgeous. I too am off to play in the sunshine at Less Is More today with some NBUS, but meanwhile thanks for joining us for our girly thanks challenge over at The Paper Players this week and totally brightening my day! Hugs, Joanne x

  28. OK you are way too funny:) I was actually believing the first paragraph but i am blond so..no more to say:) These cards are so great! I love the simplicity of the first one . The 2nd one is great especially love the background and love that 3rd one. It was meant to be. Who cares about the gloves( we can't all be Grace Kelly), you have the wrapper and it is perfect for that shaker card. My hubby bent down and ...ripppp! He showed more than he wanted, I laughed so hard. He knew better than to ask me to fix this since I only know how to sew on a button and that takes effort.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Snarkiness aside, so glad you're using mty favorite color to make cards because it's all about me, isn't it? Love them all vbecause they're all so different. As for the "S" word (sewing), I try not to mention it around here. I have two,count them two, machines. One small craft one and the honkin' mama that probably needs an overhaul before it could be used again. My husband, some years ago, thought I wanted one, so it was a gift. It goes along with all my other gifts...stand mixer, vacuum, food processor, iron. Think he's trying to tell me something.

  30. These are all gorgeous, Darnell! xxx

  31. I might be a little sad that the original story isn't real. I think it really IS real, and you just glossed over it with a boring long lunch.

    After two years, I do have my sewing basket unpacked, but still haven't found my iron. Luckily I don't have a man around who needs things patched. But If I did, I have the patches in my sewing box. :D

    Oh, and I love the cards, too!

    ReplyDelete
  32. You had me going with that story, I'm sure the people you had lunch with enjoyed your company. Great cards but really love the shaker one, great up cycling.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What a clever trio of cards Darnell and as ever your post really made me smile and I needed it this week, but we won't go into that here!
    How clever to use the gloves bag too!

  38. Three fabulous happy, yellow, sunshiny cards Darnell. I love the sentiment stamp on the first one, and the recycling of the glove bag is brilliant. It's all very well to save everything "just in case", but it takes your kind of creativity to make it into something beautiful.

  39. Just what I needed today--a good laugh! I do enjoy your stories, Darnell, & of course I thought the first one was real--got me!--but Mr not noticing the patch was priceless! So glad I'm not the only one with spider webs on my sewing basket, too. I do have an iron in plain view since hubby actually chooses to iron some of his shirts & I use to iron ribbon & twine for cards--LOL! The use of that packaging has my jaw on the floor! If this doesn't win why bother to enter!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Forgot to say, I love the SU sentiment so much I'm going to save it in Word so I can use it on a card. Thanks for so much inspiration, my friend!

  41. I was laughing at the point where the back door fell off. In my mind I'm thinking what kind of house has a back door that could fall thorough the front plate glass window! Is this house 3 feet deep? Great story!!. Also great cards. Love the sunshine and how you used the mesh on the second card. That shaker card is so inspired. Very out of the box (or bag) thinking. Just goes to show, we should NEVER throw anything out. I'm so honored that you liked my comment about being underwhelmed. Thank you.

  42. What a FANTASTIC post to come back to after my holidays... you really did make me chuckle - well OK... laugh out loud to be honest! He didn't notice?? How typical of a man...

    I love all three cards, the third one is just genius though, you really do have such an inventive mind Darnell and I for one, love you for it! Big hugs, Annie xxx

  43. Great card. All three are beautiful. However, the story Delighted with me about the good old days, all of which have survived packaging for gloves. So, you need to have a time machine, and not some in your head suggested you that the package will be useful, but you to itself had to suggest it. So tell me how to drive a time machine? Fast flying towards :-)))

The first really is summery with the sun, the flip flop and that great sentiment, and the second looks lovely with the sun bleached wood look and that adorable flower and enamel dots. Then the last, well, how clever to even think of making a shaker card with a piece of old packaging, just the best upcycling! x

And only you can write this way, I swear you should be writing books-comedy books! Your cards are amazing! I love that sun, the flipflops and the beautiful sentiment on the first card. Your second card's wooden background looks awesome and I have NBUS wood grain background stamp that I need to pull out and use! I love that flower and those enamel dots as well as the folded banner with the sentiment-might try to CASE this one! And then there's the glove bag card, are you kidding me?!!! Sheer brilliance to use this bag to make a shaker card from it!!! I do remember gloves, and even wore them on Easter as a child, you know the to the wrist ones? Oh I loved having my gloves, hat and little pocketbook! And of course my frilly little dress too! lol Thanks for the memory Auntie and love the card. Love the cards. Thought the first one (C&S) was very elegant and then I like the one below with the woodgrain which is so effective but there was more. What a great idea to use that bag to make a card, and such a delightful card as well.
    You are an inspiration.

Loving all of these, I must use yellow more often, its so happy and light. And the glove bag, that is indeed spooky. I wonder if the company is still around?? Its so bizarre when things turn up like that, although it happens to me every day with my memory being so bad.....sometimes I even look at the kids and think 'Where did they come from??' but I'm so glad I found them!

  83. Firstly I love all three cards Darnell and thanks for finding time to visit my blog. Now you have me giggling away inside with your added antics...yes I have a hubby with those shorts..not long ago he took to the lose bit with the scissors so there's a rectangle missing and I had to instruct him they were now only around the home work shorts, not to be seen when we go visiting. Now your glove baggie - who would think to make a shaker card - it's brilliant. Enough - now have a wonderful week hugs Robyn

    I had one of my MISTI magnets break today and I thought that I lost a finger, seriously, I'm typing on ice and a lot of Motrin. I will write them tomorrow. It's also how I got great coverage on my bowls without prepping my stamps first as I usually do.

    You have a new follower in me. Like you, I'm an equal opportunity stamper and of course, reading about personal stuff is always fun!

    Hugs, happy stamping and so glad you stopped by to visit me today!

  94. Your tall tale of mayhem and destruction had me giggling.

    The sentiment on the first card is so beautiful. I love how you kept it clean and simple, letting the sentiment shine.

    I really like the woodgrain stamp in grey. I never would have thought of that. I'm so going to have to give that a try. The mesh is cool too. Very pretty.

    Isn't it amazing the stuff we manage to collect over the years. The glove bag made a fabulous shaker card.
