Geometricomical

Greetings Scrampers!

I hope you're having a good week! Perchance you celebrated "May the Fourth Be With You?" "Cinco de Mayo?" "Six On a Match?"

I grew up in the middle of the country when there weren't many Spanish-speakers, so I didn't really understand what Cinco de Mayo meant until I moved to California. Before then, I just thought it was super cool that there was a celebration for mayonnaise! Unfortunately for my hip muscles, I love mayo!

Remember last week when I cut a half-inch off the right side of my card front? I did the same thing for my card today, only I kicked it up a notch (oh, ha ha "notch!") in order to use my fun NBUS die from Pretty Pink Posh called "Pocket Border."

Using it with an old stamp that nestled in the curve, I made a surprise (sh!) party invitation card:
Okay, so that was a total lie. I did not make my card for a surprise party invitation. But I could've done.

Usually I have a reason for a card and then I check out the challenges, but this time I made a card pacifically to play in this week's CASology challenge, which is "shape." As usual, when it comes to these off-the-wall designs, you can thank Hammy. He remembered that we had the old stamp of the gorilla in the rubber tire swing and I remembered I had the NBUS pocket die and we were off and rolling.

Here's a close-up:

Raise your hand if you got that this is a Rebus or "word picture." (I know you got it, Michele!)

The "sh" could mean "please keep quiet," but in this case it just means s-h.

And the picture word is "ape."

sh + ape = shape!

I admit, we karacked ourselves up over our figurative and literal interpretation all in one card!

And lest you think I'm so frivolush as to waste a card, don't worry. I intend to put the "w-i" back together with the "s-h," so that the front will say "I wish" and inside there will be a birthday greeting. BTW, the fun NBUS die used for the left-hand perforated border is "Dots and Dashes" from Paper Smooches.

~~~
While I was at it, I made a second "shape" card. There are no hidden meanings in this one!
This card came about because I had the die out on my desk. It is a Papertrey Ink die called "Four Square." It cuts a square with a circle inside. It can be used in a million ways, but you can see that I visualized a lamp when I saw it. Before I made it, I looked at the current color challenges and saw that corals are all the rage right now. Even though the photo looks orangeish, I used SU crispy can't elope cardstock.
Having a hole in my lampshade showing just the white card behind it seemed odd even to me, so I took the poppurtunity to use a NBUS light bulb stamp I had from the The Alley Way Stamps set, "Lighter Than Air." I should have stamped it lower. Owell. Consider it a rare sighting of an original David Copperfield floating light bulb.
For the pull, I used a portion of a chain from some old costume jewelry I have. I should have attached it higher. Owell. Consider it a boo-boo. The sediment is NBUS from the Avery Elle set, "Simply Labels: Hello Friend."
My friend Mamie sent me an ad from a magazine with this squirrel chair contraption:
Are the squirrels overtaking your birdfeeders? Supply them their own retro chair squirrel feeder. New arrival and only $12.99.
treehousegiftandhome.com
Do any of you have one? I'm curious if it works to keep the squirrels busy and out of the bird feeders? Honestly, who thinks of these things? And why is it never me? Although, can you imagine the process of trying to find a manufacturer for this?
Thanks, Mamie!
    The light bulb moment one is very clever too, love how you came up with that one. As for the squirrel, I have never seen one of those chairs but if it works it is a genius idea! Big hugs, Annie xxx
  23. Lovely cards as always :-) I really like the shine one!! Very sweet! I don't think us British celebrate enough days :-P I also want a pinnate :-P
    ReplyDelete
  24. Love the punny shape cards, Darnell! The squirrel chair made me LOL and seriously, why can't I come up with ideas like that? I doubt it will keep squirrels out of your bird feeders though, just give them a place to relax and hang out with their full bellies. We hung supposedly "squirrel proof" bird feeders on planter hanger poles and those clever squirrels took a week to figure out how to shimmy up the poles and hang upside down to get the seeds out.
  25. I love the way you used the cueword shape! The lamp-shape is such an original one! And the first card is so perfectly CAS! Allways a pleasure to come visit you here and allways inspiring me to think out of the box! Hugs, Gerrina
  27. You're completely hilarious! Admittedly, I didn't initially get the rebus but when I did, I fell off my chair. Don't worry, didn't hurt myself (too much padding). In any case (pun intended), both cards are awesome. Love the lamp... If you find out where to purchase the squirred La-Z-Boy, please let us know.
  28. I love your lamp. What a "bright" idea!
  39. Why do I feel one needs a doctorate to read today's post?!?!? Til I get to the squirrel chair and it reminds me of the contraption my dad has on his birdfeeder (think chalet with spikes) to keep those stinkers off of it. Doesn't work. They drop (yes, drop) down out of the tree above it. Maybe I should get him one of these chairs for shits and giggles. Which brings us to your first card. Which had me looking for an "it" ´, as in i-t, meaning in that circle somehow. What's that say about me? And your lamp, too cool. There's something so Bauhaus about it. Hugs to you and Hammy. You be on a roll.
    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh these are so super cute!!! Love the Mayo Holiday reference, cracked me up.
  42. Love your she+ape card! So clever!
    ReplyDelete
  43. I love these two cards Darnell and the play on words on the first card is so clever and such fun and it is a great shape too. The second is also a clever design and the light bulb works fabulously with the word 'shine' and the coral is such a pretty colour. I love the squirrel chair but I think the food is the deciding factor as to whether the squirrel uses the seat or not. x
    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Darnell
    Sh. . . .uper shape! Great fun card and the one with, what I thought at first glance, was a toilet with the old fashioned pull chain lol!
    Is Cinco de Mayo five lots of mayonnaise? And love the fact the squirrel is sat high up in the chair to accommodate its nuts. . . . .
    Ang x
  45. Well, I'll admit...took me a minute to figure out your first card. ;)
    Love how you think! Thanks for 'splainin' your Rebus thought process, otherwise I would have been studying this puzzle till next Wednesday.
    Fabulous card - I love how dotted border balances the cutaway edge.
    Your creativity "SHINES" with thhe lamp card! Sooooooo clever and such an awesome spot for the sentiment! Winner, Winner!
    ReplyDelete
  53. You and Hammy really outdid yourselves with the pun fun on the first card! And you realize only you really notice any alleged flaws in the second. Also, I may need a squirrel chair or three now. :D
  69. LOL, I though it said sho and I thought, sho what? Sho thing? Then I saw the light. But that squirrel chair is amazing. I doubt it would keep them out of the birdseed, but a shepherds hook coated with Vaseline will. Love to watch those pesky squirrels sliding down the pole! Have a fun weekend!
  71. Love your cards yet again! I realised instantly that it must be a rebus, but then went like: sh-monkey, no, sh-gorilla, wait what? I blame the fact that I'm still in the middle of my morning coffee :) and the squirrel cracked me up! Had to show it to my son too - he loves squirrels, and they have tons at his daycare.. I suppose I'll hear the ladies complaining next week when my son starts chasing the cuties with a chair :S
    ReplyDelete
  72. A squirrel chair??? Who comes up with these ideas. Its brilliant!! I'll be honest, I thought it said 'show (thought it was a letter 'o' from an alphabet with animals on the letters....). Its a brilliant idea for the CASology challenge and I definitely think a winner! And your lamp, blimey, thats spectacular!!
You know, I think that little chair that squirrel is on is a little home decor piece and they might have driven a nail through it to hold a piece of corn and then hung it on the tree. I see people alter little things around here in my neck of the woods like that. I hope you have a lovely weekend.
