Bobbing Along and TYI Reminder

Happy Whoosh Day Friday!

When I was growing up in the quaint middle of the last century, we had Wash Day Monday. I think Tuesday was ironing, but I've forgotten what all the other days were for and all that was chucked out the window by the time I got married and worked inside and outside the home, doing wash whenever I could squeeze it in.

Now I sit here and make up silly days for whooshing. That's the fun part of paying your dues and getting to live long enough to become a Bona Fide Geezer! (It's like a BFF only more "experienced" and with less filters!) I don't like how fast this year is flying by, but I have to say whooshing is way more fun than washing!

But funnest of all is putting time and chores off to the side and getting jiggy with water and color! For your glistening pleasure today, I have prepared a card ala Make it Monday's challenge to use watercolors with die-cut stencils. You can find an excellent video by Lexi via the link. Here is my make:
I have to tell you, this sweet card makes me smile. I love that little boat bobbing along on his little bit of wave. I'm also smiling because Hammy quickly came 'round and was a big help picking out the loopy sediment that nestled so perfectly in the sand hill. I'm happy that we're good pals again already, phew!

To make my card, I sued Papertrey Ink ~ no, that wouldn't be nice ~ that is to say, I used Papertrey Ink's "Sentiment Splits Curve Horizontal Die" which is a NBUS die that only arrived last week while we were away. It looks like this:
Papertrey Ink - Sentiment Splits: Curve Horizontal Die
I cut the die from a sticker adhesive sheet and applied it to my watercolor paper. I made sure it was well stuck so my watercolor wash wouldn't seep through (I hoped). I knew I wanted to do a simple wash for the sand and a sunset/sunrise wash for the sky. Good, okay. But while sky and sand are nice, a bit of ocean makes the beach scene more beachykeen, so I die-cut another piece and snipped a portion of the curve to apply as a wave separator. I think you can see what I mean, yes?
Then I scribbled my SAI paint markers onto my acrylic block and using my water brush, I simply did the color washes. I was trying to emu late the sunrise colors from one of our vacation photos only I made my colors softer than the real thing.
After I was finished painting, I removed the adhesive die cut, but I have to tell you, I had a devil of a time getting it off. I guess all that water made the paper separate. The top layer peeled off, but the bottom layer had to be rubbed off in tiny pieces to keep the card itself from wrinkling. I'm not sure if it is the brand I used, so I'll try a different one next time. The little boat is from The Alley Way Stamps set "Kid 'n Caboodle" and the sediment is from the  PTI "Make a Wish" set.

  • Make it Monday: See above.
  • The Damsel of Distressed Cards: Birthday Party Linkup. I used the "Happy Birthday to One Cool Chick" to inspire me because you are one cool chick, Becca, and I used "watercolor washes" which are one of your favorite things. Happy Birthday, my friend!

Today's Twofer ~ Tag You're It Reminder

Apparently when I told you on Tuesday that my twofers would be Christmassy from now, I was telling you a big fat lie because here's my twofer which is definitely NOT a Chrissie card!
In fact, it's a tag using the same watercolor technique and wee boat. The bottom layer is a seashore pp from my stash. Both tags were cut using the Die-Namics "Stitched Tags" from MFT. The NBUS sediment is from Technique Tuesday "R&R." The beautiful twill ribbon is from SU in blushing bride, which is pink IRL.

My tag is a reminder to you that today starts the second week of the current Tag You're It Challenge where I have the pleasure of guest designing. Here is another look at the delightful tag that designer Marybeth Lopez of Marybeth's Time for Paper created for your inspiration:
I do hope you can play along!!

  7. Wonderful card and tag Darnell. love the diecut!
My Nan came around to help Mum with the washing on Monday followed by ironing on Tuesday. If it was a wet day we had the wet clothes on a clotheshorse around the open fire, hope elf and safety aren't reading this! When not drying clothes we made tents with the clothes horse and an old sheet, happy days.
Did you have a set menu for each day as well? xx

  8. Darnell, your watercoloring is fabulous! I'm great at putting of housework to play in my crafty room. My husband would agree with that if he could find the computer through all the dust! Thanks so much for becoming a follower of my blog too! (Hugs)

  9. Monday was wash day, Tuesday ironing day, Wednesday was vacuuming day, and Friday was grocery shopping day, but I can't remember what Thursday was...have to ask my mom! Makes sense to split it all up that way, but nah...it gets done when it gets done! :0) Totally love your little beach scene Darnell, and love how you followed your photograph...very cool looking! Love your tag too! And very sorry to hear about Hammy's pride being so injured...hope he perks back up soon and is ready to start helping you out again! Not that you need it though...you did just beautifully all on your own Darnell! I'm sure Hammy likes to feel needed though and that's one of the reasons you keep him on! :0) Have a great weekend!!

  16. As a bona fide geezer myself, I well remember designated days starting with Monday, and now I have that old ditty spinning through my head ... remember it?

    Today is Monday
    Monday wash day
    Everybody happy?
    Well I should say

Then on through all the days of the week. I googled it and found the words, plus a nostalgic look at a wash day from my childhood at http://duquesnehunky.com/2011/03/05/590/

I got bonked in the head with a clothes pole more than once -- probably explains a lot.

Anyway, I like your take on the PTI challenge and your clever use of that die!

Such a sweet little sailboat stamp, and you showed it off with pizzaz. Gorgeous on tag and card! Loved the photo too! PS, I was wondering why Tag You're It had plenty of entries. Miss Darnell!

  35. Your card and matching tag are awesome and perfect for summer greetings and gifts! I'm so fond of the MFT stitched dies, and now you've tempted me with something else I might need in the future! LOL Looks like you had a great vaca-shun and thanks for sharing those awesome photos! Welcome home to the world of crafting again!

  36. Your background came out lovely!! I like how you used that die. I have that on my wish list. I also love your tag. I like that you used the same technique for both.

I do wash when I can-almost every day. Ironing is something I only do when I am working or going out to dinner. Mostly I just wear it wrinkled as it will get that way anyway!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. So glad you and Hammy are not glaring at each other. That is a perfect tag and card set. I may give this a try, but I just know I will make a mess with water under the stencil. LOL!

  57. Certainly remember those days. The mangle and the beating the mats over the washing line and bed linen changing day. The top sheet turned upside down and added to the bottom an the bottom sheet put in the wash. The pillow cases were changed each week though. Eek got goosy bumps now. Much better to play at whooshing. Love your bobbedy boat on the ocean waves. Hugs Mrs A.

I do prefer to do my ironing the say after I do laundry, just seems to work better that way for me. 60. From One Geezer - I love these! Was the sticky paper difficult to lift from the w/c paper after you had done the washes (or maybe I missed where you said you removed it or just colored over it!). Love the beach scene, loved the pretty tag and love the gorgeous sunset too. I remember Monday wash days (when I was a kid, not when I grew up..cause after we had a dryer, I washed anytime I could ...usually at night!). So happy that Hammy is over the snit and back to work. Tell him Life is short, so don't waste in Snitville! And yes, I hear that Whoosh. More so as I get to be more geezer too. TFS & have a great wkend. Hugs

  61. I remember the washing/ironing days all too well! A real bugger in the winter when the clothes came in off the line stiff as a board! Ironing was the only way to get them dry enough to sleep on!

AMAZING cards! Your first card is seriously incredible! I love the softness of the blending colors and REALLY love the two little bubbles on the water! And you nailed the recreation of the actual sunset that you got to enjoy while on vacation! The royal blue background paper seriously 'rocks'!

Your tag is just as sweet! Nice touch with the stars...one each for Winken, Blinkin & Nod! I sure hope you remember these three little fellas otherwise you'll be saying "WHO?" or "What's she been smokin?"

  62. Gosh, I really love reading your posts, Darnell! Have you thought about writing a 'tongue-in-cheek' book on paper crafting? Of course we would need a 'glossary of terms' to go along with it ~ I know at least 100 people who would buy it...that's for sure :)

Your card is so pretty! I love the soft color palette for the sky, water and sand, and the boat is too cute! Your tag is also beautiful! Like a mini version of your card...Love it! Congrats again on your Guest DT spot, too...you are so deserving!

  70. Hi Darnell,
I must admit one of the pleasures of being in the older category is the time I have to craft.LOL.
Sometimes my housework plays 2nd fiddle to the craft, but then my daughter always says there is nothing wrong with the house when I say I must catch up on things.
Love your super ,and wonderful card.
It did also make me smile, and the colours are so perfect.
    Wonderful design as always.

  71. Wow! Auntie, your boat card is stunning! I am so loving that sky wash, it looks just like a sunrise to me! Your sunrise photo is lovely too-don't you just love sunrises and sunsets-can anything get any more beautiful??! The little boat is so cute bobbing along in the wash of water and I love the way your sand came out. Very beautiful card! I am also loving your tag, matches the card so well, once again your water color washes turned out fabulous! Love that paper on the bottom tag too, goes so perfect with the tag. I so remember when days of the week signified a specific chore, I've never been one to follow "wash day Monday", etc. But doing my chores as they needed done. And of course with a family of 8 wash day was everyday, at least 5 loads a day. Dusting and vacuuming was everyday too with 6 boys, and cooking-well that was non stop-breakfast, snack, lunch (hubby always comes home for lunch), snack, supper, snack and finally bedtime. Then there was hay and straw-all hands on deck for that! Now I could careless if my chores are done or not. The dust gets thicker now before I clean it away, the carpets are worn out (25 years old now) and I'm anxiously awaiting for the corn to sell so I can finally have new floors. Yes, I've become much lazier in my older age and would much rather go to lunch with a friend than clean. Or craft all day with a friend than clean. lol Yes, my days of getting up early each morning and cleaning the whole house every day is over! I've discovered there is more to life than cleaning. Besides, life didn't fly by as fast then like it does now. Whoosh is right, here it is Saturday! lol Hugs, Brenda

Yes, I'm old enough to remember when Monday was wash day, etc.
Now I'm just grateful it's gets done no matter what day it is...smile!

  95. I always forget about using die-cuts for stencils, thank you for reminding me. Must try doing that tonight. Your beach scene is super cute and love the colours you used. So glad that Hammy is talking to you again after leaving him with that 'CAT', I'm sure he will forgive you...eventually....

  96. I've given up having separate days for washing and ironing, moving towards separate months, instead...or so it's been for the past while! Poor husband: he gets clean and wrinkled apparel often! Good thing he doesn't really notice...Your sailboat, bobbing along on a card and tag, is darling! Love the showcases of the stamps and, especially, your water-colour skills! Impressive!
