2024 Holiday

November 13, 2015

I'm Dreaming of a Pink Christmas ...

Greetings!

I'm so happy you survived whooshing through the week to arrive at another Friday! This is a Friday the 13th, you know, which makes it an extra special day!

In the last century, where I spent most of my time growing up, people were superspicious of Fridays the 13th and thought they were bad luck. Then what happened was, the first Friday the 13th arrived in the year 2000 and no one had a bit of bad luck so, whoosh, that was the end of that fiddle-faddle!

While today may be a good-luck day, my Thursday the 12th wasn't so hot ...

What happened was I had seen some really fantastic pink, green, and white Christmas cards around Blogland thanks to the current Merry Monday challenge. I was surprised at how much I liked them (I'm not that into pink, persay) so I decided to try my hand at it.

My consultant suggested that I turn to my stencils. I bought about a dozen of them in the last year when they were everywhere to be seen, but naturally I've only used one of them. Even so, what did I reach for? The oldest darn brass stencils I own, so old they are no doubt sold in Auntie Q stores!

Well, okay then. First, I used the cardinal stencil. I painstakingly applied a Versamark pen and then the Perfect Pearls powder with my teeny cotton swabs. It took quite a while, I'm not gonna lie, but it was worth it:
Next I embossed the panel and attached it to a pink card base.

Then, and only then, being a genius sort of person, I applied my sediment ...
and immediately dragged my cardigan sleeve over it. Frahgahmahgah!

Does this happen to me very often? Honestly, and thankfully, no. But why is it that when it does happen, it's almost never on an uber-CAS-five-minute card? It's always on those cards that I've spent a lot of time on! Thank you, Mr. Murphy, you fink!

Did I get upset? Of course not. I simply took a long drink of wodka water while Hammy cocked his thinking head and thought about possible saves. Thus was the best we could do:

Today's Twofer

That was so much fun, I made another card with the other old brass stencil and I pearlized an angel.
Here is the whole shimmery card:
Did I learn from my earlier mistake and stencil the angel after I had stamped the banner frame and sediment? I think you know the answer to that.

(You know short-term memory loss is a real thing and you have to be nice to me.)

If you're too young to know anything about ancient brass stencils, here, have a look-see:
Even with the boo-boo, it was fun using the old dears.

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*

  1. So adorably lovely. And yes, plenty of cardigan sleeve moments in my life too. Just design features you never thought of!

  2. Great recovery there, and two fab cards. And your blooper has given me an idea - what if you were to do that DELIBERATELY to the sentiment? It would give the effect of speed, wouldn't it? I make a lot of masculine cards and next time I do one with racing cars or summat on I'm going to give it a try.

  3. Beautiful in pink! Fabulous cards. It is so annoying when cardigans take on a life of there own!! My favourite trick is for my fingers to let go of the ink pad or for someone to leave the lid off the ink underneath my finished card!! Great recovery though Darnell - who will ever know!?
I too have some brass stencils I feel they are works of art in their own right!

  4. Tee hee hee. Parked my pink deer next to your pink cardinal - we're doing our part for equality in the forest my dear. I love your save of your sentiment. I think that touch of dimension is good for your card. Hope your sleeve survived the ordeal.

  5. Oh I remember those brass stencils!! I bought a few on a trip to Canada many, many years ago - hmm, I wonder where I put them...

What a shame about your beautiful pink bird card Darnell, but it has not suffered at all, in fact I think I like the repaired one even better. The angel looks gorgeous. Great recovery! Hugs, Annie xxx

  6. Know exactly what you mean about the smudged sentiment, v close to the inky little finger and the acrylic block with a tiny smudge of in in a corner that you missed when cleaning it!
Fab cards resulted for you non the less! :0)

  7. Fab cards Darnell and well saved on the first one.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving your very kind comments.

Hope you have a fab Friday. Sue

  8. Hi Darnell, I really enjoyed reading your post. I also have loads of all sorts of brass stencils. I keep them in a metal box under my desk and rest my feet on them when I'm crafting. But I did dig out a few quite recently to play with again.

I love your two pink Christmas cards. They are both sooooo pretty. What a great recovery on the cardinal card. That was some quick thinking! Barbxx

  9. I remember those ..... think I still have a few somewhere!!
Gorgeous pink Christmas cards .... love the cardinal, and what a fabulous rescue .... no-one would ever know!
Have a lucky Friday 13th and enjoy the weekend xx

  10. Oh brass stencils! I have a few of those kicking around somewhere! :-). I think your cards turned out lovely. And I can tell you how many times I've smudged a sentiment. Your save looks great and I would have done something similar I'm sure. :-). I saw in your previous post that the Mister is on the mend. So glad to hear that. :-). Have a great weekend! Hugs! :-)

  11. Good save Darnell, and yes I have a handful of those brass stencils laying around somewhere.... Anyway, both of your cards turned out beautiful and glad you had fun with the old dears! :0)

  12. Darnell these are beautiful! I've had days like that too. it especially seems to happen when I'm aiming for CAS too. You oercame and your cards are stunning!

  13. I've got some old brass stencils too!! Your cards are lovely!! And I've messed up like that many times!! Have a great day!!

  15. You know what they say, "There are no mistakes, just a place for another embellishment!" .. or is that just me?? LOL! I loveeeeeeeee these! I am a TOTAL PINK girl ... so I think these are FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Two lovely sparkly images Darnell and just so pretty. Isn't it really frustrating when the sentiment gets spoilt after you have put so much time and effort into the card! You did save it excellently with the lovely tag though. I like you generally add the sentiment right at the end which always makes me nervous but mine is generally a shaky hand not a dodgy sleeve! x

  17. Beautiful cards and great save on the first one!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh no, darn that smudgy ink! I hope your shirt sleeve survived. LOVE the end product Darnell, a real beauty. The shimmery perfect pearls are so pretty. Thanks for reminding me to use that stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nice save! My go-to method of saving myself from a schmeared sentiment is exactly what you did: stamp it again, cut it out, and cover it up. It totally looks like you meant to do that!

And brass stencils - YES! I re-discovered all of mine when I moved two years ago. I don't think I have any as nice as these, though. More smaller images and border designs. WAY TO GO using the old stuff! The cards are lovey.

  20. Oh my...what a gorgeous bird and angel. So sorry that you had that smearing issue, but both you and the cards recovered beautifully! Thank you for sharing. I had some brass stencils, once upon a time, but whatever I did with them never looked as good as the examples I was trying to emulate and thusly, they are hidden so well in my stash o stuff, I have no idea where they are! Have a happy Friday and a wonderful weekend.

  21. Great cards! And a great save too! Having a good drink of (water) always helps the creative process :) :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. ARRRRGH! I hate it when that happens! Nice save, though, and both of your cards are lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The shimmer and pink on these is beyond beautiful. I'm so sorry to hear about your mishap but I'm glad you were able to salvage your card. And I remember those brass stencils. I think I had a few.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Beautiful and elegant cards, what a great technique to use the perfect pearls (but I can see it could take time). I hope you and the mister are doing well. Happy Weekend, hugs, xx

  25. What lovely designs with those 'old' brass stencils!!! I have several of those and I don't think I EVER used them - and probably still won't!! but you have put them to wonderful use - SO pretty - been there with the smudge on the last thing - mostly on sentiments stamped crooked or incompletely on the insides!! Have a wonderful weekend Darnell!! Julia xx

  26. Beautiful stencilled cards and a great save after the cardigan moment. Love the shimmer of those super stencil images xx

  27. What a wonderful rescue for your bird card, Darnell!!!! Don't we all have accidents like those every now and again!!!! The bird and the little darling angle are beautiful with all the sparkle!!!! I have one or two brass stencils, but I used to do dry embossing with my embossing tool, with them. To be honest - I don't know where it is!!!! When I bought those years ago I would never have guessed that my card making would open a whole world of crafting and blogging for me!!!!
    Have a great day!!!!!

  28. Gorgeous cards. I really like the glittery pinks. I can't tell you how many smudges I have covered with sequins, labels, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We call it 'design innovation', my friend, and you've innovated with flair and style! Thank you for sharing the smudge...makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not alone! Smudges and crooked sentiments: if there's an award for those, just send it my way, as I have the competition won by a long shot! Your pink bird and angels: shimmery splendid! I have some NBUS stencils that might look pretty in pink...You've made this 'heavy snowfall warning day' much better (and we're supposed to go see my husband's family tomorrow...though Rogers' Pass...may the snow stop and the roads clear immediately!)
    Hugs~c

  30. Hells Bells I've got a load of those brass fings wot I bought up cheap. I thought they wos die cuts. No wonder they don't work. Huh !! Back tothe drawing board.
Just for the record I rather like the swipped look on the card before hammy got his paws on it. Does Mary know your making pink cardinals! hugs Mrs A.

Playground update. Parsnip is to play the baby Jesus, Viv is the Mother Mary (hope that cushion stays in place this yr) the monkee's (yes you red write)
are to play the donkee (one in each leg and five across the back) that leaves another 21 running amoke in the playground. The auditions are still open for the rest of the nativity parts.
Am I about due to receive a cheque for being your follower.

  31. Two lovely cards, Darnell. Don't you just hate when you mess it up like that. I often use a label to cover up, so don't feel bad.

  32. Oh and thanks for joining us this week at Merry Monday.

  33. Beautiful cards, Darnell. Great save from the smudge. Happens to you rarely? To me, all the time! And, the cards I think will be 5 minute cards take all day, and the ones I think will be complicated are always easier than I think. Takeaway message--it's always an adventure, right? Have a great weekend, and keep an eye out for pink birds.

  34. Great use of the old brass stencil.....do I remember them?? ha,ha I have the same angel one.
Do I smudge stuff, or leave unwanted finger prints??/ I would love to deny all allegations.....but I have learned the art of cover up and disguise! your's is well done, by the way.
Have a super great weekend. Friday the 13th holds no miss givings for me......my feet hit the floor this morning, so I am blessed.

  35. I still love brass stencils and wish I had those 2:) I think the cardinal was flying so fast on to the branch that the words went with him:)You did cover it up really well and both these cards are great. Now I wish I was home to use my stencils and perfect pearls. I have done this type of thing often. I have also sneezed when my glitter was open, placed things on upside down, smudged stickles everywhere..the list is endless

    ReplyDelete
  36. Fab save...I do it all the time. Today I made a card and part of it was wonky and just decided if I looked at it at an angle it was o.k!! I have some of the brass stencil and some of the newer ones and just can't get to grips with either of them, they scrae me. Love the pearly look to your cards. Have a fun weekend x

beautiful and so different pink cards although I don't love pink. and I have to find my old brass stencils :)

  42. Sweet cards with the shimmery Perfect Pearls. I love pink, so the gorgeous images really appeal to me. Hate it when those smudges happen, but that just makes us more creative. Thanks for the reminder to get out the brass stencils. I have some Christmas ones that aren't all that old from Dreamweavers.

These cards are very pretty, Darnell. Well done on the 'save' :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think we've ALL made blunders like that Darnell LOL!! But you my friend, made a great save. Such a pretty card, love the angel too!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh Darnell, you crack me up!!! what is that word you used??? FRAHGAHMAHGAH!! I must add this one to my ''secret'' dictionary of strange words!!!
Ahh!! been there, done that!!! many times, the most frustrating occasions is when I take the pictures of my cards and I'm writing the blog post and, when I upload the picture, I find a smudge, a flake of whatever, a crocked image that I didn't see before I took the pictures, sheeesh!!
But your sweet pink Cardinal is lovely and the way you SAVED this beautiful card.....GENIUS!!!!! It helps to have a swig of w..ater, LOL!! Besides, Hammy is ever so helpful, you are lucky to have him as your loyal crafting friend.
Thank you for sharing at Merry Monday.

  50. I remember brass stencils Darnell dear friend . . . I still own some too! I wish I had thought of the 'cover up' on my sentiment today, still, I can pinch the idea and do it now!! Have a great upcoming weekend my friend! Hazel xx

  51. Oh, dear! I feel the pain that you did when your sleeve messed up the sentiment. But I am so glad you salvaged it and saved that beautiful stenciled work of art. I love the other card as well. I think all of us have experienced those "oops!" moments at one time or the other. So you are not alone.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, I, for one, am impressed with your ability to make a goof on your sentiments. Me, I'm clumsy...and should take the advice of many card makers and stamp it first. Unfortunately, I'm NOT wise enough to do that. Looking at your card, which is glorious, I'm blown away at how beautifully you "saved" it. Looks gorgeous to me. Being partial to birds and particularly to cardinals, this one appears to be a winner. Brilliant use of the Perfect Pearls. As it is on the "angel" card. Love all that shimmer. Just beautiful. It is good to hear that there is a perfect cardmaker out in blogland. My hat, if I'd been wearing one, would be off to you, with a very low bow.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Beautiful stenciling, Darnell! I finally broke down and bought some Perfect Pearls yesterday, and now I am inspired to try them (after the 20 projects sitting on my desk are completed). I remember those stencils! I felt so bad about your mishap, but you made the save, and both your cards are wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  54. First of all - G-R-E-A-T save! Secondly, I just donated all my brass stencils to the local museum! Just kidding...they are stored away in a really safe spot (????) but will definitely be spending some time to um...search them out cuz your cards are UNBELIEVABLE!!! Just wait until Shirley Bee sees these - she will be all over this technique! Plus, because she is from our generation, she likely has a stash hidden somewhere too!

Seriously...these truly are works of art! The close-up photos capture the shimmer beautifully. I adore the 'softness' of the images!

You blew this this technique clear out of the water!

  55. Beautiful cards. Great save. These things happen to us all! :)

  56. gorgeous designs and beautiful sparkle. xx

  57. Good cover! I say "you're not a real stamper until you learn how to cover your mistakes!" Of course, sometimes they are uncover-able, but you did a great job!

    ReplyDelete
  58. So glad that doesn't happens tome so often, but I think it happens to us all... You covered it gracefully! And I like working with all kinds of stencils also with the brass ones; some of them are too beautifull too not use them... Hope you have a fun and colourfull weekend planed; enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Both your shimmery cards are so pretty and delicate! I still use brass stencils, I really like them and I have those 'sleeve' moments too! xxx

  60. Well as they say in Iowa, "oh dagnabit." No maybe that is the Cars movie. Like my mom would say "where there is a will, there is a way." You did it Irma you solved the problem. Thanks to Hammy and Mighty Mouse. Have a good weekend. The pink and green card is charming. I have a collection of the brass stencils. BBB

  61. Great save! I would have uttered a few choice words but you are a real lady and just had a sip of "water" - very impressive! Love the shimmer and soft look of your cards! I, too, have some of those brass stencils (and a light box - do you have one of those, too?) and should dig them out and try your technique...

  62. You know I love my visits with you, cuz, who hasn't had to think of a way to save a boo boo. Oh the agony! You did well, who would know? Except that you told the whole world... Beautiful work, as usual. How sweet is the cardinal in pink? Lovely angel too. Have a blessed weekend!

  63. Pretty cards and great save on the cardinal card. I think I have a few of those brass stencils (I've never used). :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh smudge! I hate when that happens after making a tedious creation, but what a great save! It turned out to be quite stunning with all that work you put into it!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Darnell....what a fabulous pair of cards! Love all that pretty pink, not a color I really think about using for a Christmas card but you totally nailed the pink! Love it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Darnell, your save was absolute genius! I have to admit to having used that "trick" on far too many cards, especially when I was first stamping. Heck, who am I trying to kid? I still have to do it more than I want to admit. Your PPP sequins are perfect for covering up the occasion spot of ink in the wrong place, and much prettier.

  67. DARNell... cardigan sleeve! You sent a wave of cringing across the craftyland of the Blogosphere when you shared your sorry story. I have the same medication nearby, though, when it happens. 69. Your cards are wonderful, and yes I remember those stencils! However I gave mine away right after I produced close to 40 Christmas cards doing the stylus embossing with a favorite brass stencil! My hand cramped so bad I vowed to NEVER use another one! Too bad, cuz people like you come up with easier ideas of how to use them. Congrats!

  72. OMG Dippy - this is just the sort of thing I do.......frequently! So after a "dang" or two I then stamp a sediment and diecut it to go over the teeny tiny mistake! In the end your two cards are beautiful and sparkly. Like you I've got loads of brass stencils - can't quite believe how crafting has come on in leaps and bounds over the past 5 years or so.......but then I'm getting old! lol

  73. Beautiful cards Darnell! I LOVE the pink cardinal. I've had plenty of smudges in my life, the "easy" cards are less painful to redo. It's those labored over that break your heart. I'll have to pull out those brass stencils collecting dust in my drawer. Thanks as always for the wonderful inspiration!

  74. I know a bit about boo boos and techniques for saving me from a total disaster, and yes, it's on the CAS or one layers that turns out to be necessary.... But nice save, really! And these old brass stencils are treasures!

  75. Oh yes, I have shaky hands and inky fingers and set the inkpad upside down on my card. I got a MIsti which helps with a lot of those problems. I have 50 or 60 of the brass stencils(do I do anything with them...not) but I still buy them when I see them at the thrift stores. They are so neat.

Your card is outstanding...seems I have a few of those old gold metal stencils hanging around! Your bird is awesome and you did a great job covering up the accidental swoosh of your cardigan...in fact, if you had not shown that smudge, we would have never known!! Well, done, my friend and we thank you for playing along with us at Merry Monday and using your least favorite color for your Christmas card!! I consider that to be a very lucky number indeed. lol I love, love your cards, how fun to put those old brass embossing stencils to use! I'm sorry your sleeve smeared your sentiment and can so relate to doing something like that. But you and Hammy had a good save, making it still a beautiful card. Love the angel too, she is just stunning! Now me, I am a pink gal, so the pinks on these cards are right up my alley Auntie! Hugs, Brenda

  87. There's an old adage that there are no mistakes in stamping. Presumably we are to take what are obviously mistakes and turn them into something splendiferous. And you will obviously earn extra points for this save. No sense taking a perfectly good stenciled bird and throwing it in the trash when you can add a LABEL! Booyah!

  95. Hi Darnell! Your post made me chuckle! If you only knew how many times I have done that...I even have more creative ways of messing us a sentiment. I look at it as an opportunity to be even more creative. Anyway, both your cards turned out beautifully! I love the soft glimmery colors and the beautiful CAS style. You have proven that less is more...gorgeous cards!

  96. Apologies for being so MIA, but I was trying to wait until I had time to set & contemplate & enjoy your post! Now WHY did nobody ever TELL me there is a CARDINAL stencil? I feel most aggrieved! How-some-ever I will struggle past this attitude, and say a big WOW! You knew I would love this! He is just boo-ti-ful, in all his pinkedness. (never saw one like him at my feeder, so I'll be watching!). A great save too! Now this is the kind of thing that inspires me (along with the skills of the beauty, but I always like the boo-boos and how they got solved too). I'm glad Hammy & the Wodka were there to help things along, cause it shore worked a treat. Also loved the pink angel a lotta lotta, too...but that Cardinal. well, you'll know that. I have a TON of brass stuff, so that dates me too! Best hunt through them. Glad to see that Mr. is improving daily as well. BIG hugs, and MWAH - TFS. Ya'll have a great week.(guess I better find those P.Pearls too. I could use that with versamark on some of the line art birds, right?!)

  97. These are beautiful cards, Darnell! I have a couple of the "old dears" and I need to get them out and give them a try. I'm sure they're pushed to the back of the drawer, but their shiny brass will give them away. It will be fun to see what I can do with them.

  98. I don't have many of the brass stencils, but keep meaning to try running them through my Big Shot to emboss them--if I can find them--haha! LOVE the shimmer--so worth the effort, Darnell, & yes--I have so done that!

  99. I used to have one of those brass stencils but who knows where it is now. I'm not sure I even used it. I sure like what you did with them. The angel is especially nice with the pearly finish. What is it about us that we don't do the sentiments first before all the work? It's happened to me many times. And I usually solve it the same way you did. Isn't it great there are a variety of dies to use to hide the boo boos.

  101. Strange, but I'm not a fan of pink for a Christmas card, but these are beautiful. And as much as I'm not a fan I just made one this week and was going to submit it to the same challenge you did (new to me) Merry Monday but it was closed, but joined the new week. My daughter told me don't worry about smudges or spots on the card, there is always a cover-up with a mat or an embellishment...sometimes my cards look like there might have been a lot of smudging lol.
