Hello Everyone!
When I recently did a bit of a tidee in the Playhouse, I sorted and straightened drawer after drawer of beautiful colored cardstock in every Hugh of the rainbow. I realized what a white rut I've gotten into. I mean, I don't even reach for the cream of the cardstock any more, let alone color.
So when I saw there were challenges spotlighting the use of pretty cardstock colors, I jumped in with relish. And some onion rings.

As a bonus, I even used a scrap of pp, which has been lurking on my desk. Last week I decided to make a card with it rather than toss it in my BOB box. I don't know if you can see, but I found a green that is the prezact color of the birds ~ and I love the texture. I cut the circle appleture and then thought, now what?
Then I remembered I had the NBUS "Prayers" die and stamp set from Simon Says Stamp so I cut a piece of fun foam. The pp still looked a little bare inside that big appleture, so I added a birdhouse from my NBUS "Birdhouse Village" set of dies from Memory Box. Wallah!
It was like a gift when I noticed that the current Less Is More challenge is a Colour Challenge to use white space that isn't white! And my friend Liz Cavill is Guest Designing! Now LIM doesn't mean just use a colored card base, but make sure you have leave plenty of uncluttered area as "white space." My own entries might be too little white space, but I tried to think whether or not I would enter them in a LIM challenge if the card base were white, which I would. I know, it's very confusing.
I used a few of my snippets, so I'm also taking my card to show my mates over at Pixie's Snippets Playground!

And then what happened was, I saw the new Muse: Christmas Visions challenge had posted and the talented MUSE Kimberly Wiener also used colored cardstock on her card! I'm WAAAAY behind on making Christmas cards and have been missing other fun Cc challenges already in the books this year, so I dropped Duke's tennis ball and got to playing with cards instead.
The card base is aqua mist from PTI. The fun stamps (separate sled and sledder) are from Purple Onion, and the sediment is from Technique Tuesday's "Jingle All The Way" set. I stamped the sweet critter and then masked him and stamped the sled, part of which I also masked. I drew the snow line and then watercolored the image using my Zig KGT paints.
I cut the image down using a Nestabilities deckled rectangle die and rimmed the edge of it with a black brush marker. I then fussy cut a mat panel. The sun was rapidly going down by the time I finished, so I ran out to take my picture, forgetting that I wanted to add stars to the sky on my card. Dagnabberschnichle! I think they are so sweet on Kimberly's card so I'm going to add them after wards.

Other Challenges
- Addicted to Stamps and More: Holiday.
- Fusion Card Challenge: Photo Inspiration. (Thanks, Lolly.)
- Happy Little Stampers April Christmas Challenge: Die cuts.
- Less Is More: Colour Challenge to use white space that isn't white.
Here is your adorable inspiration card from Kimberly:
So just to recap: I was inspired by Kimberly's use of a colored card base, her fun critter sledding, her watercoloring, her uneven-edged mats, and her happy sediment! Another DJKASE in the bag!

Speaking of Duke, we've been enjoying his company the last week while the heir apparent and family have been on holiday for spring break. It was lucky the furballs were scheduled to be out of town because Duke is afraid of them. Yeah, no, seriously! You would think he would play with them like little furry tennis balls, but luckily for them, not so. It's quite amusing really, when you consider what a big dog he grew into.
Midweek I thought we were going to lose Duke to a heart attack when one of the smoke alarms started going off because
How he manages to survive in his own house with two active adults and two very active and very loud boys (one of whom plays the drums!) is beyond us, but he seems impervious where they're concerned. In fact, he is the sole of calm as those boys do what they will with him, like making him wear Mr. Potato Head's cap! Oh, the indignity!
~~~
Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*
As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to join as a follower! Please let me know you came by, so I can be sure and return the flavor!
Loving all your cards Darnell ! Super designs !
ReplyDeleteLove that green - what a colour and with the blue. Spot on! Am also taking inspiration from your getting on with Christmas cards to get on with some more myself. I love the look of that sledding snowman in the inspiration card. As always thank you for sharing your crafty goodness and funny stories :) xx
ReplyDeleteBoth these cards are fabulous! I absolutely adore the Christmas one. Your coloring is perfect! And what a cute (and apparently tolerant) dog Duke is :)
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell, Loving the cards.
ReplyDeleteI love Chocolate Labs and Duke is once handsome lad.
Hope you have a fab Friday. Sue
Two fabulous cards - the coloured card is perfect for both designs.
ReplyDeleteKath x
LOVE your colour cards Darnell, you really have matched the birds well with the background and I love the teeny birdhouse. The snow scene is adorable, he is such a cutie - I really love the wiggly border, it finishes your card beautifully.
ReplyDeletePoor Duke, perhaps he just doesn't like noise that he is not familiar with, he does look cute in that hat! Hugs, Annie xxx
Great to see you over at Less Is More, Darnell and with two beauties! That green on the first card is gorgeous with the added dimension of the die cut sentiment and I love the cite image on your Christmas card too :) Have a great day x
ReplyDeleteLovely cards! You choose such great colour schemes, and the images are so sweet. That little bird house die on the LIM card is adorable!
ReplyDeleteGreat to see your coloured cards Darnell and a big reminder to me that I should do something with my mountain of coloured card leftover from scrapbooking days. I love the sentiment cut from fun foam and the sledding critter was so expertly masked that I had assumed it was an all in one stamp!
ReplyDeleteDuke looks really cute but I hope your stocking feet don't imply that he chewed your slippers.
Hugs
Carol x
Two super cards, Darnell. Love the addition of the little birdhouse on the first one - just perfect. The second one has such an adorable image. xx
ReplyDeleteTwo gorgeous cards Darnell ..... I must say I don't use a lot of coloured card when it comes to card bases but seeing your fabulous creations makes me think I should start.
ReplyDeleteThanks for playing along with the HLS challenge. Have a great weekend and give that handsome furry boy a big hug from me xx
Fabulous cards Darnell - love your wee bird house on the first card, and the expresshun on that critter's face on the second one is priceless.
ReplyDeletePoor Duke -fancy going to Granma's and being scared half to death with the smoke detector!
Blessings
Maxine
Lovely cards, Darnell, and another entertaining blog post. Thanks for giving me my daily dose of fun and laughter (or grin or chuckle or whatever). Our Bernie is scared of everything. We found him when he was only 4 weeks old (on my birthday 2+ years ago) and that's probably why he has some issues. When he starts barking in the living room, we look around us and usually see 'something' that has been displaced. Could be the paper towel that is standing on a different part of the kitchen worktop. Entering with a parcel with crafty supplies also sets him off. It's a good thing I haven't been shopping lately...
ReplyDeleteMarianne x
Love your cards Darnell - and the snippets one is especially up my avenue! Great image and a perfect take on the inspiration card as well.
ReplyDeletePoor Duke, he looks shaken - but maybe not stirred. Could be worse, I once looked after a neightbour's hamster while tey were on holiday and the little perisher escaped during the night - never to be seen again. We almost ripped the house apart (as in the film Mousehunt, which I can't watch without shuddering now0. But she'd totally vanished - poof, just like that from a locked house.
Great to see you in the Snippets Playground!
Hugs
Di xx
Your cards are lovely Darnell. I love how you've used coloured card. They look really good. I don't think to do that.
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome boy Duke is. Great photos! Barbxx
Love your cards!!
ReplyDeleteI too, have been on a bit of a white kick. It always seems a good/easy place to begin when I haven't been crafting regularly. Good for you for pulling out the colour! It turned out a lovely card. I also love your Purple Onion card - fabulous and CAS at the same time. And I myself haven't made a single Christmas card yet, I should really get visiting those Holiday challenges for inspiration!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Shanna :)
p.s. Love Duke's hat!!!
All your cards are great but your dog is the greatest !
ReplyDeleteIneke X
Beautiful cards, the little birdhouse is adorable and the colouring on the bottom image fantastic. Your granddog looks adorable, how wonderful you look after him while his immediate family is away. Hugs, Shirleyxx
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness your muse card is fab. I'm in awe that you fussy cut that layer and did the black line. Super cute fun challenge and you nailed it.
ReplyDeleteDarnell, I love both cards but have to say that one with the bear on the slay sled sorry whatever its called is so cute and you have coloured him so well and the wonderful die cutout and well everything totally wonderful. Bet the dog loves getting to relax with you both and hat on head, well go on tell the truth..... That was you doing that wasnt it"??
ReplyDeleteHad fun reading your blog today. Gorgeous first card and loving the colours and the fun foam for the die cutting. Great take on the Christmas card and such a cute critter x
ReplyDeleteTwo fabulous cards Darnell and I love the blue with the green and your cute birds and birdhouse. The snowy scene is a wonderful CASEing of Kimberley's pretty card and I love the way you have combined the two PO stamps - so cute! Lovely photos of handsome Duke too. x
ReplyDeleteYummy cards. That green is one of my all time favvie colors, and the way you've paired it with the blues is pretty darn fantastic. And your MCV card is adorable! Love that image; that hat is just sweet. Great watercoloring too! Another cutie patootie. Duke looks like he loves his 'grandma' and trusts her completely. You could be in his hero category, you know. I'm on day five of YKWs and this one is a killer. I wish you were here so I could hide behind your skirts too! Will chat soon...bkb
ReplyDeleteTwo delightful makes Darnell and some fab pix too
ReplyDeleteHave a simply SPLENDID weekend
Kathyk
Love both your cards, and they are perfect CAS. Love expecially the second one, your CASEing is a true delight with this cutie!!
ReplyDeletePoor Duke, he has had a stressful time... and then, the indignity of Mr. Potatoe hat! :)
Lovely cards. I especially like the green with the blue. The little birdhouse just makes that card. The Christmas image is really cute.
ReplyDeleteBoth cards are gorgeous Darnell but I especially love the second one with that super cute image, wonderful watercolouring too huni. We have that problem with our JR for some reason the fire alarm going off freaks him badly and it takes a while for him to calm down. He's used to me and my Mr and all the noise we make but fire alarms have him heading for the back of me lol! Karen xx
ReplyDeleteFab cards, Darnell and I am especially delighted to see you playing at the MUSE with that fun little sledding scene you created! I looks fine without the stars, but I guess you could still add them if you want to. Always love reading your blog posts! Duke looks just fine as "Mr. Potato Head" - green suits him ;)
ReplyDeleteOh Dolly ... you have been having fun! :) LOVE both your cards. The texture on your green card is luscious. And such a beautiful and serene scene you've created to go along with it.
ReplyDeleteThat sledding critter is ADORABLE. Great take on Kimberley's sweet card. These colours are perfect for Fusion challenge ... you might want to join in there.
Duke looks very comfortable at your house (except for the smoke alarm debacale). :) Lolly xx
OMG, you dropped the tennis ball to card make, you rock!!!!!!! it was so hot yesterday, a freak high of 80 when we are usually in the 60's....weird..I did want to get outside, but my stomach turned queezy, so I just napped until it got cooler, and I did more zig playing too...
ReplyDeleteI ADORE your skeet car, all the ELEMENTS!!! The critter sledding, YAY, LOVE Purple Onions designs! The colored cardstock, such a great grounding color too, I love the PTI colors, mine was a memory box color...I have all the memory box blues, I guess I should know the names... huh.... Oh yes! The colors are perfect for FUSION (it is my sketch/image pick over there this time..) ,Yay, !!!
Love coming to visit... My life is a little of an upheaval lately so I dont get around. but meh...Ill try to do better! Thanks for joining MUSE Christmas Visions and FUSION too, Love the Prayers stacked sentiment on your card at the top.... lovely...must be PTI again... they are so gorgeous!!!! I must be scared silly to use them, I have alot of PTI and they sit.... I grab silly critters instead....Owell. again, I will try to do better! HUGS !!!! Darnell!!!!!
You made my day by joining us!!!!
Another two super cards Darnell. I love the bright green with the blue. Poor Duke! I can understand how he felt, the smoke alarm scares me to death too when it does that.
ReplyDeleteYour watercoloured image is so sweet and perfectly masked! Great to see you at MCV this week, Darnell!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cards and cute dog
ReplyDeletehave a nice weekend
hugs Tamara
Both of your cards are so beautiful!! I love the colors and design of the first one!! The image is so cute on the second!! Duke is so adorable!! He looks precious with Mr. Potato Head's cap on :) Have a great weekend!! Big hugs :)
A Mermaid's Crafts
Great cards Darnell. They both are adorable. And poor Duke...
ReplyDeleteOh wonderful cards Darnell ... I used to have so many colours of CS and now I only use white! I have to say that your son's dog has my heart though ... he's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat cards and you're so right that we fall into the white card trap all to often. Mind you I seem to be developing a kraft card addiction at the moment. Love the doggy pics, so cute. Have a great weekend, Cara x
ReplyDeleteYour card are all so gorgeous but that first one sure has caught my eye. It has the most beautiful mix of colors and I love the simplicity of it too!
ReplyDeleteI was impressed that the cats were typical cats and couldn't care less when the battery is low warning went off in our house. It is an annoying lady voice "the battery is low, the battery is low." I thought for sure Charles would freak out over a strange lady in the house, in the ceiling none the less.
ReplyDeleteI like both your not-white, white spaces cards. I am partial to the sledding critter one although I don't want to go sledding or do anything cold.
Loving that colored cardstock! That blue "Prayers" die cut and birdhouse are wonderful and I love the green color of your birds! Beautiful coloring on your Purple Onion cutie, he looks so happy to be sledding down your card!
ReplyDeleteBEautiful cards! Poor Duke! Glad he survived the smoke alarm.
ReplyDeleteAwesome cards - love the colored base I too never use color [and should for a change]. Your CASE of Kimberly's is right on!
ReplyDeletemy smoke alarm went off and my dog can not get on my lap fast enough! He shakes like crazy for about 10 minutes. That sound completely upsets his ears~
Great minds...that's all I'm sayin'. Except (you really didn't thing I was done, did you?), I, too have been trying to deplete my considerable hoard of colored CS. Not as well, as you're doing, however. Both these cards are so sweet...think I spied a winner.
ReplyDeleteDuke, by the way, is a darling. Beautiful color...looks like a hunter, too, but apparently not of hamsters. Must be nervous because he isn't in his forever home.
You have created two very pretty cards. Great use of not white "white space". I'm far away of making christmas cards. I know it will be a great rush at the end of the year. :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Hugs, Sonja
Gorgeous colourful cards.
ReplyDeleteKath x
oooh, great cards, so pretty ...
ReplyDeletehave a great weekend.
hugs, tina
I love both of these! Your colour match on the first one is fab! The birds look gorgeous peeping through the circle and the bird house is so darling! The second one has the cutest image and your masking was fab to combine the two images. Duke is just gorgeous! He looks so cute hiding behind you and wearing the hat! I am glad he got over the shock! xxx
ReplyDeleteCongrats on using that pretty colored cardstock! I love the texture and beautiful designs! Poor Duke - is that a tear I see slipping out of his eye from the humiliation of having to wear Mr Potato Head's helmet?
ReplyDeleteOh thank goodness hubby was in his chair next to me when I read this post so I could read the Duke story to him & show him the pictures! Wish I could meet Duke in person! LOVE your cards, my friend! The colored white space is perfect for both cards! The first card is stunning & oh what an adorable second card! Now get back to playing ball with Duke!
ReplyDeleteThat's some pretty textured cardstock and a sweet little onion guy sledding! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteFabulous cards Darnell. Your critter on a sled is just too cute! Duke is such a gorgeous boy & I can relate to having an anxious dog. We have a retired racing greyhound who struggles with anything new.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful use of your colored white space, this is fabulous Darnell!! And that Christmas card. Just don't get me started on how cute it is!! POOR Duke :( Our little Max was terrified of things like that.
ReplyDeleteSuper cards today, Darnell. I especially love your sweet Christmas card. I need to get some more of those made, too. I'm also waaaay behind. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteGReat job on ALL the cards, especially since the furballs are on vacay! Hah! Well, I like them, so you did a great job. And Duke? Well, I'd have a heart attack too if alarms were going off, those things are NOT normal!
ReplyDeleteI don't k know what is happening with blogger, been trying to comment and it wouldn't let me...but here now! I do the same when our smoke alarm goes off, drives me crazy! I love to use coloured card stock and adore your Xmas card. Great masking and colouring. Must try to mask more myself! Thanks for joining Fusion and have a good weekend x
ReplyDeleteEqually stunning, striking and totally cute design Darnell and I'm thrilled to see you've linked another one up at Less is More. Thanks so much. Sarah
ReplyDeleteFun post to read,as usual! You do have a way with words....and cards! Love them! The green is fun for less is more, that sounds like an interesting challenge. I'll have to check it out! Have a great day!
ReplyDeletePS...Tell Duke he looks great in his hat!
Love Duke in that sweet little hat, I have one just like that in my classroom. Happy to hear that he is ok. Your cards are so sweet...love your wonderful style.
ReplyDeleteNeat cards and use of color and dies. I especially like the deckled rectangle dies, great look. Poor Major, my Ginger dislikes the vacuum cleaner and hides in her crate. Hope you are feeling better. :) BBB
ReplyDeleteIt is easy to fall into the white rut, for sure. The first card took you right out of that! The second is a sweet holiday card. Hope you don't scare your furry visitor again... he may squeal.
ReplyDeleteGreat take on Kimberly's card Darnell, it's such a darling image. I like the first card too with the lovely aperture and fun foam cut outs. Poor Duke!
ReplyDeleteLove and hugs
Maarit
Two gorgeous cards!
ReplyDeletexoxo Olga
Two very sweet cards, Darnell! Love how you left so much 'white space' on the first one ... I seem to have great difficulty achieving this :(
ReplyDeleteYour Christmas card is darling, I thought it was one image, cool masking.
Love the birdhouse card and beautiful color! The sled card is adorable and colored perfectly, Darnell! Poor guy , we had the smoke alarm go off when DH was out of town of course it had to go off at 3am., my dog (Major) and I both almost had a heart attack .
ReplyDeleteNice thick head of hair my friend, I couldn’t help but notice that :)
Great series of cards Darnell, I do love the green one, such a gorgeous colour and the fun foam diecut looks fantastic. Duke looks even more adorable with his Mr Potato Head hat! Cathy x
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty card and in a color combo I just love Auntie! Your little birds are so cute and the birdhouse was the perfect tough to finish off your CAS card. Love the prayers cut out in the foam too. I need to get me some. Love your sweet little Christmas card too! How cute is that little puppy sledding?! I love how you have watercolored him too. Great use of your colored cardstock Auntie! Awww, poor Duke! Must have been that high pitched sound that hurt his ears. Boys I guess aren't high pitched. lol Just loud. Don't ask me how I know. Hugs, Brenda
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell - firstly Duke is gorgeous - what a lovely natured boy. ( I have two four legged hoomans, both gals - mad as hatters so they fit in perfectly here )!
ReplyDeleteYour cards are beautiful - I am a boring so and so with card colour but you have inspired me to try something different.
have a great Sunday
love from
Sue...xxx
Poor Duke. First you stopped playing with him to make cards and he was probably stunned at your priority. Then he is completely traumatized by the smoke alarm. He may be thinking gram's house is not the place to hang out now when he used to enjoy it so much! Your cards are great. I love how you added that cute birdhouse. You have inspired me to use my colored cardstock. I used it for Easter but never reach for it unless I'm making layers. I love that green.
ReplyDeleteBoth cards look great Darnell, but the cute sled one is just too cute not to be my fave. Looking forward to the trumpets! Xxx
ReplyDeleteBoth cards look great Darnell, but the cute sled one is just too cute not to be my fave. Looking forward to the trumpets! Xxx
ReplyDeletePoor Duke!! you sure have a blast in your neck of the woods with your "wildlife" wink and beautiful mounds of paper!! Sweet sweet cards! - amazing coloring on your little sledding critter!!
ReplyDeletePatti
Wow - good for you! A very, very successful step away from white! I'm in the same rut...but I have been inspired!
ReplyDeleteI love the texture on the birdhouse card! Gorgeous inked syy and sweet little house and birdies! Great photo - the shadow really captures the popped up sentiment.
Sweet, sweet little bear card too! Awesome coloring - love how you have him 'going downhill'...nice movement and NICE blue base!
Sweet pic of Duke! I bet he LOVES having sleepovers at your house! Can't blame the poor fella for freakin' out with the smoke detector...scares the crap out of me too when the darn thing goes off whenever the toaster is used!
Sorry for my late visit this week, but time just ran away from me!
ReplyDeleteThese are fab Darnell! I will be dog sitting for our heir apparent next week and the week after... Minnie will probably wear me out!
Thanks so much
Chrissie
Those sweet birds and their cosy little house are delicious in their yummy colour palette, Darnell ... scrumptious texture too in that gorgeous green cardstock and touchable die cut fun foam! Delightful little sledding critter ... he's so happy in his watercoloured ensemble ... what a cutie pie! Miss you muchly, mon amie! Hugs & bisous, Anita :)
ReplyDeleteAs always your cards are so inspirational Darnell. I love these ones.
ReplyDeleteSorry I am tardy coming to see you. Thanks for joining us at Less is More.
Sharon xx
Fun cat on the sled card, Darnell. Love your take on Kimberly's MCV card.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have GOT to try die cutting with fun foam now. That Prayers sentiment looks so dimensional, and is that bird house also cut from foam? I have quite a lot of the stuff, in all colors, so there's no excuse not to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI like Duke's hat, and now I have on my HLS Christmas hat, to come over & enjoy another post with you today. Saw your cutie snowfella on the Christmas Challenge, and just had to tell you how much I like it. Love the blue with Mr. Snowguy- is this a pup or a teddy? whatever, he's awful cute in his sweet winter garb, and easy to see he's having loads of icy fun. Great work, and I like relish with my onion rings too! TFS playing in the April HLS Christmas Challenge, Hugs too.
ReplyDeleteOops - forgot to mention the very artistic Zig KGT coloring too! You're a pro awready with this stuff! :-)
ReplyDeletegreat cards darnell .I havent even given christmas cards a thought but youve inspired me to get a move on as fr using couloured cards i might even give that a go ..mmm...no white ! big hugs andrea x
ReplyDeleteDarnell... Your snowman is too precious!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely projects, Darnell! I'm partial to labs too. My Charlie is yellow fella. :) Thanks for joining us at ATSM.
ReplyDeletex Asha
What a great colour green with the birds! So good you are using the things you already have...would be a good idea to do that more here aswell :) Love the pure look you gave your card! Hugs, Gerrina
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell
ReplyDeleteTerrific cards and I'm thrilled to see someone else using funky foam to add dimension. Its great stuff!
Poor Duke. Maybe its the pitch of the alarm that distressed him, bless.
Best wishes.
Ang x
Your non-white space, white space cards are stellar! The highlight is your sweet sledding critter; impressive (and has me wondering how you managed to line up the images, via masking, when these are rubber stamps. I don't 'get' rubber stamps very well...except as separate entities. Where is that emoticon you mentioned in your previous post. Needed! *Head slap...*). Duke...such fun being the center of attention at Grandma and Grandpa's house! Smoke alarm terror: happens to me, too! Mr. Potato Head cap...haahahahahahha! He's a gem!
ReplyDeletehugs~c
Your card is so sweet. I love the small luge, which is so nicely painted watercolor. That makes this card amazed me, even if there are no stars :-) The remaining cards are also wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing with HLS CC.
hugs,
BozenA
Two fun cards Darnell. Thanks for joining us at HLS Christmas challenge this month Carol DT x
