Hello Stamplings!
I have a very quick post toasty for you. I used the word "toasty" on porpoise to make those of you in the Polar Vortex feel warmer. I wish I could do more as records freeze, drop off the roof, and shatter. Thank goodness the temps will be warmer starting tomorrow for a lot of you.
I went all full-bodied and inkylicious today!
I went all full-bodied and inkylicious today!
I saw Betsy Veldman's post about doing watercolor and salt backgrounds, with stunning results. I liked how she colored the salt using reinkers, so I did the same and made up four small containers of different colors.
Using the wet-on-wet technique and my Gansai Tambi set, I laid down my watercolor paints. While the paint was still wet, Hammy and I sprinkled the colored salt over the wet watercolored panel and set it aside to dry. We then flipped to see who would go to the spa while we waited for the panel to dry and, of course, he won. Why do I keep falling for that time after time? The last time I successfully did a flip, I was in the womb for crying out loud!
Once the panel was dry, I white heat-embossed the pretty lily from Papertrey Ink's Botanical Blocks III stamp set. Then I stamped and die-cut the get well sediment from PTI's Bold & Beautiful Sentiments. To finish the design, I added three clear blinglets and, for exercise, I walked a white ink pad all along the outside of the plum card base.
Challenges

- Back to Basics and Beyond: Also a salt challenge with a video link.

Thank you for commenting on my last post and for playing in the Thank You Hop for Di, the beloved leader of Pixie's Snippets Playground! The Hop is open until the end of day February 10th for you to join in.
Over the years, it's been wonderful to see many of my stateside friends join Pixie's and I have a feeling even more friends from around the world will be joining as a result of the Hop!
The more the merrier, but ladies, it looks like we'll need to set up another moonshine distillery behind ol' man Jensen's raspberry bushes down the path from the bike shed. Or, if you're sober, that's fine, too. We'll set up a raspberry distillery behind his moonshine bushes. hic.

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*
As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to join as a follower! Please let me know you came by so I can be sure and return the flavor!

Gorgeous card Darnell. I love the blues and the bit of lavender on your smooshing. The white flower is delicate and lovely. The blue panel on the lilac base with the white edging ties it all together nicely. It is supposed to warm up here come Sunday. Tuesday hubs and I have a field trip planned to the container store. Weather should be cooperative.
ReplyDeleteYay! You're playing with our salty challenge at Back to Basics and you've made a MUCH better job of your gorgeous salty background than I made of my shabby attempt! Thank you for joining in.
ReplyDeleteSee you behind the bike sheds later, the gin's running low so I might have to pop out for supplies.
A wonderful effect here. I love the salt effect and have often used it but who would have thought of colouring the salt crystals before sprinkling, brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteI love the gorgeous colours on this fabulous background Darnell. I've never heard about colouring the salt crystals, but but a great idea.
ReplyDeleteSue xx

Wowza Darnell, this is beautiful! Your background turned out great and I like the elegant white flower. I just saw another card with this technique, might have to give it a whirl!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous card, Darnell xoxo
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning card Darnell - and clever you to colour the salt first! It's yet another idea for the future to try. Ha! AND, I read about the moonshine - Dudley is going off into battle with Parsnip riding on his bag armed with a pea shooter to 'ping' anyone he finds lurking behind the raspberry bushes!
ReplyDeleteHuge hugs
Di xx
What a fun technique, Dolly! Another on my list to try. Love the blue and purple together and how the salted background colors the pretty framed lily!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous background, Darnell! Could you provide the link with the how-to? It sounds like fun, I'd like to give it a try. I am in that polar vortex so thank you for your warm wishes!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful colours and a gorgeous salty watercolour look Darnell, and the white embossed framed lilies look great over the top, and this is a perfect 'get well' card. x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful card Dolly. What a great idea to create coloured salt to use. Adds another dimension to the pretty watercoloured background. Lovely white embossed image. Hope to play along with your Hop for Di! Lolly xx
ReplyDeleteDarnell, this card is GORGEOUS! My visit is not "required", your card just really popped out at me. I am absolutely in love with that background and now feel the need to give it a try myself. Thanks so much for the inspiration and for joining us over at Little Red Wagon!

ReplyDeleteOOH, moody blues. Love the texture the salt added and that lovely lily. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteYes Auntie, the Polar Vortex leaves tomorrow! I am ready for it to leave too. lol We were fortunate that it only last a few days. It will be spring here the next week, crazy weather for sure. Then I'm sure we will got back to winter. OMGosh Auntie, your posts always crack me up! You and Hammy sure do see some great times together, but he sounds like stinker too. To bad you didn't get to use the spa, but you both have made a fabulous card together! I haven't tried this technique and I don't believe I've ever heard about dying the salt too but sure make a pretty background! Love the pretty framed flower you embossed on this background and a great get well die cut too! I guess we'd better watch the alcohol consumption across the pond! Hugs, Brenda
ReplyDeleteIt is up to 3 today! Woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteLove your salty backgrounds. I have never tried coloring the salt. Very fun!
Such an artsy, unique and fabulous salt background. The colours are so pretty and the white line stamping botanical flower looks wonderful x.
ReplyDeleteGreat job with that technique! Hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat pretty colours, perfect for the white embossed image xx
ReplyDeleteGorgeous background which goes really well with the plumb card also love the stamp and the white embossing.
ReplyDeleteKath x
Now, that's my kind of background, the colours are gorgeous and I love how you created the 'texture' with the salt (with Hammy's assistance of course). The background makes the white embossing stand out beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI am thinking that I am just about ready to throw on the leopard skin, if only to keep warm with this unusual polar freeze we are experiencing - nothing like the States are experiencing but pretty cold and snowy for here! Hugs, Annie xx
Oh what a beautiful background - and then to white emboss the focal image. Love the blues, and lavender. So Hammy got the spa - you have to figure out how to be smarter than he is. Our polar vortex has lifted about 10 am this morning and we are currently up to 52 this afternoon. Higher temps tomorrow- must wash my dirty car. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteFabulous background for your beautiful card, Darnell. Love the heat embossed image too. xx
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Must add this to my list of my try techniques!
ReplyDeletebeautiful Dolly, salt technique is one of my Fav's :)
ReplyDeleteYou always give me a giggle, Darnell! You also always blow me away with your cards, as in the awesome background on this one. This had to have taken some time, but between you and Hammy you got it done! I'll take raspberry moonshine, please, with sugar on the rim.
ReplyDeleteOooohhhhm your card is beautiful, Darnell! Love that salty technique and just have to give it a try! The blues, greens and lavenders are a gorgeous background for the white embossed bloom!
ReplyDeleteI've yet to try this technique and your card looks just stunning with all those colors in the background! The white flowers add such a lovely contrast too, while leaving the background in the spotlight! Thanks for the warm wishes - I think we're going to have a big meltdown quite suddenly as those temperatures rise 50 some degrees within the next day or two! Have a great weekend and take care!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous Darnell!
ReplyDeleteGreat card! Guaranteed to help someone feel better. Thanks for joining us at Little Red Wagon.
ReplyDeleteI can see your bright card is full of sunny thoughts - perfect for get well wishes!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous card Darnell, LOVE that salty background and the wonderful colours xx
ReplyDeleteLove this technique, I have to try it on paper as I used it on silk years ago. Your background is amazing as well the whole design!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, Darnell I am late commenting - I've been in a bit of a funk, partially 'cos I am tired as the world is spinning so fast I can hardly keep up...know the feeling???? and we have had some really high temperatures this week too.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, enough about me - love your gorgeously coloured card Darnell, and it was so 'right' to simply emboss the image in white.
Please don't go trying to outdo Hammy on the flips, he has the advantage of being lower to the ground as well as four legs... I would hate to have the Mr turn up on the blog saying that you were incapacitated due to flipping with Hammy........
Blessings
Maxine
Superb idea on using coloured salt. I've never tried that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining us at Back to Basics and Beyond challenge.
Happy crafting !
Catherine x DT
I've tried that technique and loved the results... Love your results too! What a lovely creation!
ReplyDeleteYou Salty Dog, you! (That message was meant for Hammy for scamming you out of your spa time). Your salted panel is gorgeous! The lilies and scripty sentiment are perfect with it! I missed commenting on your Pixie post, so I had to go see what all the fuss was about - what a beautiful tribute! Gosh, now I hope to play too!
ReplyDeleteLovely card Darnell and such pretty colours and a wonderful effect with the salt
ReplyDeleteAnne

ReplyDeleteA gorgeous card design and with so many wonderful colors. I love it.

ReplyDeleteIt is cold, but the sun shines and that gives a good and positive fibe... just as your card does! going outside again; looking tom 'score' some vitamine D... Enjoy yout weekend!
ReplyDeleteI am thinking about this technique since I saw it on one of the blogs a few days ago. I haven't used it for ages. You achieved amazing effect. Heat embossed flower is nice and a wonderful choice for soft colours of background.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Hugs, Sonja
