I have a very special post for you today. You may not be aware that January is Thyroid Awareness Month. My friend Crafty Milka has gathered 26 card artists from around the world to support this cause and to raise public awareness of how important your thyroid is and the problems it can cause when it is not working properly.

In 2012, a blue paisley ribbon was launched by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists as an icon for thyroid awareness to emphasis the silent epidemic of thyroid disease. That's why I used an ancient snippet of paisley paper as my background panel for the W Plus 9 butterfly frame. The base card is a lovely textured paper from my stash and the NBUS sediment is from MFT, probably also from 2012 (cough). Bits of bling were added by you-know-who. I am entering this card in the Butterfly Challenge.
I was first diagnosed with thyroid disease in 1995 and had half my thyroid removed. This surgery is known as a "lobectomy" and you can imagine the fun I have with that word since it is so close to "lobotomy!" But in all seriousness, I suffered for years from the very long list of symptoms caused by an improperly working thyroid. They are no fun, but fortunately there is synthetic thyroid that's easy to take which brings your body back into balance. Milka has put together a very in-depth blog post detailing the symptoms. She provides numerous important links for you to check out so I won't repeat them here, but I do encourage you to take the time to read her informative post. Thank you, Milka!

Because the thyroid is shaped like a butterfly, a butterfly is also a recognizable symbol for campaigns about thyroid health awareness, so I made a second card.
Here you can see the shine of the silver embossing.
Wait. What? A butterfly on a Christmas card? Well, why not? That's the fun of making our own cards! I wanted to play in the CAS Christmas challenge and I had started my card for that by silver embossing the tree on linen paper. I also wanted to make a butterfly card for this post and I had that pretty blue Brusho butterfly from my Bits Box on my desk to make a second Thyroid Hop card. Hammy waddled over and looked from one to the other and up at me. Down at them, up at me, down at them, up at me, and finally I went Shazambam and there you have it!

I know a little bit about thyroid, but I just recently became aware it has its own awareness month. I’ve always loved paisley patterns, I fancy that butterfly frame too. Butterfly on a Christmas card is an original twist, but you made it work, I think it looks lovely.
Both cards are stunning Darnell, I especially love the Christmas butterfly and as Pia has already said it is an original twist that you have made to work so beautifully!

Two lovely cards Darnell...both so very different and that blue in the second one is electric. I didn't know about Thyroid Awareness Month..but I do now...Thank You. It's not something I shout about but will share... 3 years ago I had radioactive Iodine to destroy my thyroid and consequently now take medication daily as a substitute but I struggle immensely on a getting a balance right and the side effects can be a problem too! It's good to know that there is support for everyone out there. xx
Two gorgeous cards Darnell and I love the idea of the paisley on the first, and why not a Christmas card with a butterfly. I love the silver embossed tree and the blue Brusho butterfly goes beautifully with it. I can empathise with the idea of spreading the word about throid disease as I have an underactive thyroid so take thyroxin to bring it back to acceptable levels, and before I knew what the problem was I suffered from some of the symptoms that Milka talks about especially palpitations and brain fog which really affected my self confidence for awhile, but which did go when I was put on the medication. x

since I had to have 5 needles put in my throat/ thyroid to remove fluid.

Both are such pretty cards. Great idea to have a hop for this. I will go on over and read the post to make sure I am up to date on what I need to know. I know thyroid issues are common in my family.

I LOVE that you used a butterfly on your Christmas card, Darnell...such a clever idea and beautiful to boot!!! I also love your pink and yellow paisley on the first card...it's such a sweet symbol for Thyroid Awareness! Of course, I'm a leftover 'Flower Child', so give me paisley any day and I'm happy :)

Having been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid over 30 years ago I wasn't aware of this awareness campaign until now but knowing the problems associated with thyroid function it can only help.
Both your cards are so pretty and a perfect way to highlight the campaign. :)

Your cards are lovely, Darnell and spotlight an important cause. I'm glad you got your thyroid taken care of. It definitely can cause issues. I have a low thyroid (for lack of a better term) and take so medication to help with that.
Both cards are just beautiful Auntie! I didn't know that January was thyroid awareness, so it is good for this blog hop! The butterfly is used in Lupus awareness too, but just a purple ribbon. Love the paisley you used on your card and that sentiment. Cool butterfly frame too! I knew that the thyroid not working right caused a lot of issues, glad your was diagnosed and taken care of Auntie! Your silver and blue Christmas card is stunning as well. I know first hand how this little part of our amazing bodies can cause big issues. I love butterflies and had love it on a Christmas card! Your butterfly is gorgeous and I can see why the shiny silver is drawing him close! Love that you found a place for some DP stash and the three butterflies flitting around on the paisley! The sentiment is perfect to remind us how important it is to take care of ourselves.

Two delightful cards here Darnell! I did not know that January was Thyroid Awareness month. I've been diagnosed as hypothyroid since I was a young adult and have been on meds ever since. I have my TSH checked every six months and it amazes me how your body can be affected when the levels are off. I'm off to check out Milka's post and challenge.
What a wonderful sentiment of "take care of yourself". We should all be aware and take the time to do that. I love the paisley on your card and the blue paisley ribbon for awareness. I take synthetic thyroid medicine for mine and have for many years. That is s gorgeous Christmas card too with a lot of sparkle and lovely butterfly. What a wonderful idea for a blog hop, I had no idea that there was a thyroid awareness month (either I'm asleep or it isn't all over the interweb like I would expect). Sorry to hear about your thyroid troubles Darnell, but glad things are better for you. I have an underactive one and been on meds for about 6 years now to correct it. From personal experience, I know all about the vital part the thyroid plays in our bodies. Fortunately, didn't have to go through what you did, the little gland raised havoc in me for quite a while way back when. It's good that Milka is calling attention to it.
And you are too with both these cards. Think the butterfly at Christmas is a brilliant idea. Kind of like tiny angels, aren't they?
I had no idea it was Thyroid Awareness Month! As someone who literally had to BEG my doctor for the needed blood test {this was years ago when I was quite as. . . let's say confident} and how long it took for my body to adjust to the medication I KNOW how critical the thyroid is! Hopefully, this hop will cause someone who is being told there is nothing wrong with them to get tested <3

Gorgeous cards, Darnell! I had my thyroid and most of my parathyroids removed 5 years ago due to Thyroid Cancer. Now I'm in remission, and I take meds every day, just like you. No fun but it's saving my life! Thank you for bringing more attention to this disease.

Fantastic cards and for an excellent purpose too. My Mum was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid many years ago and the balance has swung over the years for her but is now well controlled. An op was never an option for her as, with a heart condition too, the risk was thought to be too high xx

I was unaware that there was a thyroid month - even as a nurse about all I know about the thyroid is you can take a pill to "fix" most things" thyroid. I had a fried who had the surgery and she really did quite well post op. Your cards are beautiful but I have to say the second one is really outstanding. Working in a medical lab all my adult life introduced me to many patients both hypo and hyperthyroid and I know it's no fun thing. Downright scary in some instances. A worthy cause, raising awareness. In fact, my cat developed a thyroid problem late in life and it was surprising how it affected him. You have two very different and very pretty cards, Darnell! I love the butterfly frame and paisley. Good to see you're still whittling away at Mt. NBUS. I'm in love with the Christmas card! That tree is so delicate and gorgeous and the background from which you cut the butterfly is totally dreamy. Such pretty and unusual embossing powder on the sentiment, too.
I am very aware of how important thyroid health is, but I did not know that a special awareness day had been assigned to it. I was diagnosed with Hoshimoto's Thyroiditis 40 years ago and have suffered a roller coaster of symptoms over the years. Thanks for helping to bring this into the light. Your cards are beautiful....love the butterflies!

Love the first card and the clever way you've combined both the paisley and butterflies and the second is just so exquisite with that brusho splattered butterfly.
Darling Darnell, your cards are as delightful as usual. The blue butterfly does look like the Monarch Butterfly we have in Australia, Anita in France. And on Darnell's card looks just like a gorgeous ornament. I too have thyroid problems as I have Hashimoto's disease, believed to be a result of my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome . There was no need for an operation as my body has almost eaten it away. You should see the confusion on the faces of young radiologists when they ultrasound my neck. You've reminded me though that it's time I had my levels checked. It's so easy to mistake the symptoms of thyroid disease for other things. I didn't know I had it until my doctor ran the tests trying to find out why I was feeling so bad. All of the symptoms were self excused because of cfs or stress or being overworked /overtired etc.

That brusho butterfly is GORGEOUS!!!! Both cards came out great. The theme really hit home for me as my daughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was 12. (The amazing doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia treated her, and now she is fine - 7 years later.) I'm sorry to hear that you have been dealing with thyroid issues as well. Half the world most likely has butterflies flitting about at Christmas time, so it's definitely apropos for them and a fun change for the rest of us.

Luckily I don't have a problem with my thyroid, but the dog of a family member just got put on meds which hopefully will make a big difference for him. I love your butterflies, including for the Christmas card!
