Oooh, Yummo! Cakes! Cupcakes! Recipes!

Hello Stamplings!

How are you? I hope those who celebrated Mother's Day yesterday had a wonderful time! Big hugs of comfort to those of you for whom this holiday is painful.

Speaking of hugs, it's a blessing to have my family and friends vaccinated which allow us to share special holidays in person again without masks, but with lots and lots of hugs! Don't those feel amazing? I don't see how we will ever take hugs for granted after this pandemic.

And second best to hugs is what? That's right! Cake! Well, maybe cookies and pies, too, but for this month's Twofer Card Challenge, it's all about 🎂Cakes and Cupcakes🧁!

I chose CAKE so here is my cakey inspiration for you:
The hysterically funny stamp my Twofer has in common is NBUS from Art Impressions called "Birthday Cake Set" by Barbara Krebs.

Onefer
For this QACAS card, I used a very old snippet of SU DSP with birthday cakes all over it. On a white snippet, I stamped, paper-pieced, and fussy-cut the birthday cake and then hid it among the cakes on the pp. Can you see it? That angled sediment is from PTI. You can't tell, but Hammy had a time glossifying those candles.

Twofer
Another QACAS card! This design is really pretty self-exploratory. The photo frame is from PTI. This card will need to go to a dear friend with a wicked sense of humor! Fortunately, that pretty much describes all my friends! The droopy candles, much like my bahzooms, have been duly winked by HRH. No, no, bad English.

I hope you'll be able to join in with your 🎂CAKE/CUPCAKE🧁creations! We are delighted to have Guest Designer Janet with us this month! You will be inspired by her designs, as well as the designs of the entire talented Design Team! I do appreciate all your support of the Twofer Card Challenge and I hope you have fun while increasing your stash!

BONUS ~ RECIPE EXCHANGE!

Wait. What?

Well, as long as we are thinking about and talking about cakes and cupcakes, how would you like to take part in a recipe exchange? Remember those? It is strictly optional and strictly for fun, but if you'd like to share your favorite cake or cupcake recipe on your post when you play, we'd love to read about it! I may even compile them all and put them on a page here on the blog!

Long-time readers will know my favorite:
We always called it Crazy Cake, but it is also known as Wacky Cake or Depression-Era* Cake because it has no eggs or dairy.

Lots of online recipes show this cake frosted, but we always had it straight from the oven, naked, or with a simple dusting of powdered sugar. It's so easy that I would sometimes run home from the law firm where I worked, make the cake, and take it back to work while it was still warm, moist, and incredible! What's that? Why, yes, it was often made around the time bonuses were handed out.😉

Rather than type up the recipe, I've found a great website which has it (The Good Hearted Woman), as well as lots of pictures to explain the process. Click: Chocolate Wacky (or Crazy) Cake and dig in! By the way, it is a super fun cake to make with kids!

~~~
*Overheard in the grocery store in 2021:
Grandma: "I also need some cocoa to make my Depression Era cake."
Granddaughter: "Oh, that's sad. Why were people, like, all depressed?"
~~~

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy, and keep safe! LITS!*

As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to join as a follower!

*Life is too short!

Two fabulous cards, Darnell. Love the cake overloaded with candles, although I think I might need a few more on my next birthday. 🤣 Still no hugging allowed in the UK, unless they live in your house. We’re not allowed to go into someone else’s house either. Roll on next week when some of the restrictions are relaxed, although I’m not sure hugging will be allowed until June... officially. 😉 Glad we’ve both had our double dose of jabs giving a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. xx

Two fantasric cards Darnell. I remember my Mum and her neighbour making Wacky cake when we were kids and used to play in a crowd during the School holidays. Once it was ready there would be Wacky Cake all round.

I see your stamp with all those candles looks like my last birthday cake - more candles than cake, lol! That patterned paper is fabulous! All those cakes make me want to run out to the kitchen and bake...but no...not at 6:00 in the morning! I know that your friend will love that birthday card, too! Your coloring, especially on all those bitty candles is amazing, btw! And I love those pinks!
Crazy cake...yum! I've made that cake since the kids were little and it is definitely and always a hit! So, so easy too. And, say...isn't chocolate a depression lifter?! I know I'd be happy after having a piece or two! Awesome cards, great recipe!! xoxoxo Bev

Great twofers. Kinda yummy looking too. I loved reading about the Chocolate Wacky cake. If my mother was still alive I bet they made this in their house. I would've liked to ask her. She told me the depression made her finally start to drink her coffee black. No sugar no cream. She said one of the worst things was not getting butter. They could get oleo and mix in a packet of "Schtuff" to make it yellow colored. Yikes! [Bunny]

Your cake cards are yummy to look at. I love both especially the one with the cake alone and the background. Because th are wonderful, glad you got both shots and are doing well. I would like to try that cake because I love butter and can’t see how eggs can’t be in a cake but this is a good recipe for people who are vegan.

Fabulous cards, D - love that party cake paper, and your fun birthday stamp!
You might not believe it: this is MY favorite chocolate cake, too! My bestie is sure we got the recipe from Home Ec in 7th grade!
=]
psst - you had me worried, but I counted the candles - it's not for me!

I'm getting ready to head back to the lake so the challenge is just in time for me to make my cards. I love those wonky candles and the pieced cake is superb, Darnell. The ef on the other one is perfect for the other occasion and the pink is such a great pop of color. I may have to try that recipe but I do have one I can post if I don't forget. I'm trying to get all my team cards done before this weekend so I don't have to worry about what stamps to take with me. With those two and two for Twofer I should be all set.

I love your yummy cake cards and Crazy Cake was one I made a lot years ago. I seldom bake though anymore as hubby will eat them and he is diabetic.

Cake will be easy, though I'm a pie girl...but the challenge sounds good. I see you had a good time with it, though. Such sweet and fun ideas. Of course, my perverse mind loves the sentiment on your second card.
I checked out the recipe and it could not be easier or quicker to make this little jewel of a cake. I think I remember my Mom using it when she was short of time or we had unexpected company. Thanks for sharing. Hope you're doing well.

I love your two great cake cards Darnell and the background paper covered in yummy cakes is so pretty and love the way your stamped one snuck in there, and then the beautiful and bright pink with the birthday EF is just perfect. I love the look of that chocolate cake and may have a go at that myself. x

Love those delicious cards!! What a great image with so many candles that they are tipping off the cake! Thanks for sharing your wacky cake recipe - I've never made one of those but I think I'll just have to try it. And a good recipe to have on hand for a vegan friend!

Cool cards, Darnell! I love the cake with tons of candles, and the sentiment you added to the second one is perfect. Your cake looks delicious.

LOVE your cake image Darnell, and that's quite the bit of fussy cutting on that cake and the bazillion candles on the 1st card...I'm impressed!! The cake and candles look just as good on the 2nd card too, and I'm loving the sentiment also!! Your Wacky Cake recipe looks amazing and I think I might just have to try it...just to make sure it's really ok, ya know??!! FUN post as always...thanks for the chuckles my friend!! Hugs and hang in there with the back...thinking of you often!! :0)

Crazy cake is my favorite too. Naked - straight out of the oven. But, my mom does make a crazy good brown sugar frosting for it.

Bonnie said...

Wow, that is a lot of candles, Dolly! I think they need a bigger cake! What a fun image and it fits perfectly on the decorative paper! Love it on the embossed background and kudos to Hammy for all that winking! I've never made wacky cake, but think maybe Jack would enjoy giving it a try next time he comes. It looks delicious!

Carol L said...

Great cards for the twofer, and all those candles surely brought the fire company out once they were lit! LOL Your cake looks yummy - I'm off to check the recipe! Healing hugs coming your way :)

Love the cards - especially the Birthday card with embossing. And I LOVE the Vaccinated Hugs. All of my local family and friends have been vaccinated. Now we're able to visit more freely with everyone. . . and hug our grandson.
The cake recipe looks so easy. I hope to make it soon.

Lisa Elton said...

Do those cakes come with a fire extinguisher LOL! How fun are all of those candles! Two terrific cards. I know crazy cake, it's from my mom's side of the family. We've all made it for one family function or another!

Cheryl W. said...

Your cake cards are fab. The wacky candles really add to the humor of your image. It's too bad that during this time of COVID we can no longer blow out the candles. My family has started giving the birthday honoree a single-serving cake with one candle to blow out--not nearly as exciting as the usual "cake on fire."

TFS your depression cake photo...Looks moist, delicious and easy..do you ever put fresh berries on top? I am always looking for ways to use all our berries: strawberries, loganberries and blueberries...sounds yummy to me:-) We do have a favorite cake...Zucchini chocolate cake...always looking for Zucchini recipes too:-) BTW...Thanks for sharing your cupcake cards too...almost forgot..so distracted by the yummy cake! I hope I get a chance to play...so busy catching up outside since getting back from our awesome 3 1/2 week trailer camping/hiking trip. Tomorrow is a Big Day...we get our 1st vaccine at 8:00A.M...Then our booster in a month...Hurray!!

TFS your cake, recipe exchange and fun cupcake cards, my dear friend. Miss you, Dolly...Much Love and Big Hugs...Nancy

That birthday cake has so many candles and it could start a major fire! :) LOVE both your cards. Fun pp on the first and lots of texture with the embossed happy birthday on the second (I have that embossing folder and it's an oldie!) ... just like us! :) Thanks for the link to the Wacky Cake. I have never had that cake before. Looks delicious! xx

I love the twofer theme this month and it is very apt just when we are starting to get used to going out to cafes for coffee and cake again. It is one of my favourite pastimes but I do try not to do it too often for the usual reason. Great cards, I particularly like the second one because of that amazing embossed background. Funnily enough the only cake I have made in recent years is your crazy/wacky cake, I didn't know it was called that, but I make it in bun cases for my grandson because he has an allergy to eggs, we both love it xx

Redanne said...

Loving your Twofer today, that cake sure looks crazy with all those candles on it... it is what mine might look like if I had one!

Thanks so much for the link to the cake, it really does look yummy and I think that even a poor cake maker like me could do it...

Sadly, no hugging here until next week but it will be lovely to get back to it for sure! Lots of cyber hugs coming your way! Annie xxx

Hi Darnell, how lovely to be able to hug again, and that you had a fabulous Mother's Day. We can't hug until Monday, it's been so long.
Anyway, your two cards are beautiful, lovely images and bright bold colours, lovely layouts too, Kate x

Such awesome cake cards! Love them both. I dare say fussy cutting around those candles would have taken some patience!

Oh a cake exchange sounds heavenly for my lips!

Anita in France said...

You paper pieced all those candles, Darnell? Wow, what patience ... and precision (you and Hammy for the glossification) ... such a fun image against the cake-y pp background! You added fabulous dimension with your colouring on those melting candles on your texture-y birthday card ... imagining the shimmer done by His Royal Hamminess ... must be brilliant IRL! Winked bahzooms ... hahahahaha ... great bad English!! LYAMYLALMA ... EML! Big hugs and bisous, Anita :)

That's a whole lotta candles! Terrific cards my friend and even a cake for real.. What a post. Funny, I LOVE chocolate but I've never been a fan of chocolate cake... I know.. I'm weird. Have a good day!

It seems as if we were thinking the same idea about humorous sentiment on birthday card. :-) Your sentiment is fantastic and matched perfectly to the cake with a lot of candles. And it makes my smile. Aniversary card is great too. Perfect patterned paper. For each aniversary one cake. :-) Crazy cake looks delicious. Thank you for the link. I'm happy for you that you can hug your family again.
Hugs, Sonja

Two fun and fabulous cards, and I must say you have my curiosity up about the inside of card #2!
As for the Cake? YUM! It's chocolate! Who cares what the recipe is called - lol

Pia S said...

Love the cake stamp with all those candles! I love the DP you used for the anniversary card, the stamped cake was the perfect size to blend in with the pattern. I like how the sentiment is placed at an angle, I don’t know why but I find that hard myself, but I’m practicing:) second card is clean but with fun, bold, eyecatching colors.

Leslie Miller said...

Lots to enjoy here, Darnell, starting with your two cards! I laughed out loud at the cake with so many candles it can barely hold them. Love the paper on the first and the embossed white purity of your second card. The recipe idea is fun. So far I've bookmarked Bonnie's pound cake and now your Depression Era cake. I've heard of it, but never looked at a recipe. Definitely going to print the recipe and give it a try. Thanks!

Such a fun cake image overflowing with candles--just how I feel now! Recipe exchange is a great idea! I know about Wacky cake, but don't think I ever actually made it. Will have to check the link!
