Alcoholink Floaters

Hello Stamplings!

How are you? I hope you've had a great week, a great holiday weekend, and a wonderful spring break! I'm doing fine now and we enjoyed having the family and dear friends for Easter dinner. It was very nice to be together again after a two-year Covidelay.

Even though I haven't been blogging much, I have been happily making cards over the past few weeks when I felt well enough. I made several dozen designs using my BOB (box of bits), which is always enjoyable and productive. It's amazing how panels and die-cuts and partial images will accrue in a short amount of time ~ rather like NBUS!

This past week I've been making cards from panels that I made during a craft Zoom session where we floated in an alcoholic ink bath. You can imagine the beautiful colors of my tub now! I'm joking, but it is tempting ...

Onefer
If floating paper in a bath of alcohol inks is new to you, here is a video link: Andy Skinner. I made the two above designs using Yupo paper which gives the colorful panels a lovely sheen.

Twofer

It's been a while since I made these AI panels, but if I remember right, we next tried creating patterns in the ink as soon as the panels were pulled from the bath. Here are two examples using bubble wrap:
And then, because there was ink on the bubble wrap, I grabbed some vellum and smooched a coupla panels which I made into QACAS cards like this:
I noticed that the pattern left by the patterned bubble wrap was in the pattern of a partial heart, so I added a simple love die-cut sediment. The vellum was folded over and attached to the tent card at the top and then left to hang free over the front.

I do seem to have a penchant for blue, green, and gold, don't I? Just to surprise you, I also bathed in some yellows and reds, but I'll share those cards another day. It's an easy and fun technique and before you know it you'll find yourself with 20-30 panels which can be turned into pretty cards.

~~~
I'll leave you with a terrific family photo from Easter:
Wait. What? Did we forget to take photos AGAIN?! I hope you did better!
~~~

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*

Oh, just out of curiosity, are you playing Wordle? As you can imagine, Hammy and I are obsessed and it's now become a part of the daily morning routine. Some days it's just pure luck because the winning word could be one of many similar words! There are knock-off games out there now, but the original official game can be found at nytimes.com/games/wordle. You don't need to download anything or have an app!

As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and letting me know you did. Mwah!

  3. Those alcohol panels look fab Darnell, especially the top 2, the white die cuts look stunning.
    Glad you're feeling more like your old self and had a fab Easter break. We went to our son's to see our new granddaughter born on the first, makes me all gooey inside. She did sleep for all of our visit, managed a long cuddle before we left though. :)

  7. Hi Darnell! Happy to see you posting and to hear that all is going well nowadays. How lovely you were able to get together for the holiday after a long separation. Your cards are beautiful. I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm interested in doing so. I really like the colors you used in all your cards. They work very well together. And, nope, I've not jumped on the Wordle Wagon. One of my daughters has, but I don't think I'd be very good at it. I hope you have a great week!

  8. I do play Wordle too. Is translated to the slovenian language. It is daily routine to me too. Morning coffee and Wordle to bring my brain to the working temperature. :-)
    Thank you for the link. I have to try this out. All your backgrounds are awesome and you've created wonderful cards using those background. The most I like the love card. Vellum gives the softness. It looks fantastic.
    It is wonderful to celebrate Easter and spring with the family again. I was so happy to have one half of children at home during the holidays.
    Don't forget to take photos next time. :-)
    Hugs, Sonja

  11. Your backgrounds (and completed cards!) are beautiful, Darnell. Can't wait to see the other colors. Yes, I play Wordle. It's a great way to connect with the family every morning. :-)

  12. Wow Darnell, you have been extremely busy!! Gorgeous cards with the AIs, especially love the ones with the bubble texture! Glad you're feeling better and, no, I did no better than you with Easter photos... Yes to Wordle - love it! We call those puzzles with the million (I exagerate) possible words "cater" puzzles (one where I tried all those other words & cater wasn't one of them). And if you haven't tried Quordle (4 words in 9 tries), you will love it too - just pray a cater word isn't any of them!!

  13. Your alcohol ink backgrounds are beautiful, and I love the colors! You inspire me to pull out my alcohol inks (with which I've only had moderate success) and try again. My fave from above is the last one with the vellum--so soft and lovely! Yep, I have ZERO photos from our family Easter celebration!

  14. I will have to check out that technique after seeing all your lovely cards, Darnell. Glad you had a good Easter and its nice to be getting back to more normalcy. Hugs.

  15. AI float is one of my favorite techniques. Love the colorful panels you made, and I think using the inky bubble wrap was a super idea and a great bonus to your float activities.

  18. So glad you’re feeling much better and we’re able to have a family Easter. An interesting technique on your cards, another one to try. I’m accumulating “things to try” as much as NBUS! Yes I play Wordle as well, much like the rest of the world I think. If you’re finding it too easy there’s another version called Quordle - 4 grids to fill in at the same time! hugs Sue xx

  20. The backgrounds on the first two cWards are my favorite. Love those bright and cheery colors! You've truly been busy, and I'm so happy to read that you've been crafting away. When we're good to our bodies, they really do heal in an amazing way, don't they? Stay well, keep crafting, and blog when you can.

  23. Four fabulous creations Darnell... I do understand about the BOBs, and have quite a stash myself, so it's so nice to dabble and then find time to put the bits together as cards.. I tend to watercolour lots of stamped images and then they sit.. but I have been having fun today be creative. Love the AI backgrounds and the simple die cut overlays, glad to read you're on the mend, hugs Robyn

  28. Some wonderful results using the floating AI technique Darnell, and I love the die cut frames and leaves you have added on the first two,and then the interesting looks using bubble wrap whilst the inks are still wet on the next two...such pretty bright colours too, and the remaining ink smooshed on the vellum has also turned out brilliantly and does look like an over the edge heart, and the die cut sentiment cut from some of the same goes perfectly. Glad you were able to catch up with friends and family over the Easter weekend too and great that you are now on the up! x

  29. Sheesh, I was not familiar with Wordle, but I went over there and played it and actually got it right on the 6th arrangement. Love words games but rarely play any kind of game on the computer. This was fun. Thanks! Onto your cards... I am an admirer of AI backgrounds and marvel over the results. Favorite colors are the blues/greens/yellows. Too bad for me that I have never bought all the stuff and gotten full-blown into it. Really pretty cards, and the bubble wrap made an interesting effect. It's good to know you're doing so well. Modern medicine is amazing!

  30. Greetings, Darnell. Happy to see you creating and love the AI cards, the colors are among my favorites. Hope to see the family and your dog next time! Many hugs.

  38. Oh sh... now I read about your Easter photos I remember we didn't take any either! But we kept it small; just our fam and my parents and the most important was that we were together having a good time...
    Love that technique; one you can get totally Zen with! And so many beautiful results! You made great cards with them! Love the green and blues! Hope you have a good and fun weekend planned! Hugs, Gerrina

  42. I do love alcohol ink and you have made me want to get mine out again. What a wonderful selection of cards and so wonderful to showcase those lovely backgrounds. I am so glad to hear you are making good progress now. We had a family get together just before Easter and, just for a change, we did manage to get a photo. I am so pleased about that as I am usually terrible at such things and always regret it. Looking forward to seeing more of your makes soon xx

  45. Gorgeous creations Darnell, I guess it's the same sort of technique as shaving foam? Love the colour mixes. As for the photo, I'm usually like that, but I'm trying to take a leaf out of my niece's book, she takes EVERYTHING, a pain in the proverbial sometimes, but at least she has a record of everything she has done in the last 50 years. Now all she needs is a few albums! Good to hear you are feeling better and enjoyed your family get together at last. Wordle, yep! it's my obsession too, just as well I can only play it once a day. So far just one failure whoop whoop.
    Keep safe and well.
    Faith x

  50. Alcohol floating - sounds like fun - I have made alcohol backgrounds but never floated it. Off to watch the video when I get done with comments. These are beautiful - and then to use the bubbles from the bubble wrap. Genius. Glad you are feeling better - at least well enough to create.

  51. Fabulous cards Darnell! I've never worked with alcohol inks. Just might have to try sometime. Oh..my family didn't take any Easter pics either.

  52. Since I love any word games, I'm obsessed with Wordle, Darnell. Sometimes words come easy and sometimes, like when they rhyme, it can take all six tries.
    I love your alcohol baths. I saw Therese do a video on this not long ago and said I was going to try it. I've been busy finishing up some quilts that I need ready when we get back to Michigan but as soon as they're done I'm diving in. Pun intended. lol

  53. What beautiful cards Darnell - so glad Hammy did not jump in the colourful bath, or you may have had techni-colour footprints meandering drunkenly across your cards :)
