Pouncing Powder and Fun With Friends!

Hello Stamplings!

I hope you are doing well and enjoying the last few days of spring! (Although for some of us, the furnace blast of red hot temperatures would have you believing it is the middle of summer!😝)

Speaking of blast, I'm just back from a fun crafty retreat with some friends last week. It's my first trip anywhere since 2019 and it felt wonderful to get away! It was also exciting to try out different techniques ~ always more delightful with a group of friends!

Onefer
One of the techniques we tried was from a video I stumbled across while on You Tube. It was a Marion Emberson Mini-Masterclass video showing the embossed pouncing technique. It was a hoot watching her experiment and I had to give it a try. Some of you may have already "been there, done that," but it was new to me.

I have to say, it took a bit of trial and error, but I didn't really have any failures because all the results were cool in their own way. I did find that some of the brands of e/p (embossing powder) worked better than others. Also, as Marion says, make sure you keep the heat gun moving so it doesn't overheat!

If you place your piles of e/p between two sheets of parchment, you get "skins" that you can attach to a card front. Or you can put the piles of e/p directly on a chipboard image, cover it with parchment, and then pounce it with the heat gun. I liked the chipboard way the best. But either way, when you pull and lift the parchment away, you get that cool "flame" effect.

For this card I did both. First I made a skin and set it aside. Then I piled and pounced the same colors of e/p onto a chipboard heart and that looked great. And then, just for the heckofit, I attached the skin over the top of the heart! Here's a closeup:
The skins are pretty fragile and can be 'holey' depending on how much powder you lay down, but it does adhere well to a card front if you put enough pinpoints of glue on the back. The e/p I used was WOW and the stitched frame is from Reverse Confetti.

So then what happened was, ala Marion, I thought the mess that was left behind (after I removed the heart from the piece of cardstock) would also make a ... well, what would say? Artsy card? The love die is from Winnie & Walter sprinkled with e/p to match and heat-embossed. It's very glossy and schparkly in real life.
And here are a few more below. For the first one, I used a NBUS flower die from my friend Bozena which I cut from heavy cardboard. I haven't made the results in the middle into cards yet.

Thank you, my friends, for a fantastic time in your beautiful state!

Wow! What a “cool” effect. I’ve watched one or two of Marion’s videos but not this pouncing technique. It’s been summer down this way for a couple of weeks already. Today we had rain and the temps finally cooled but the humidity would choke a horse. Looks like you had a good time on your outing to Oregon. what fun. Hugs Nan and the Girls

I'm sure you all had a wonderful time at your retreat after so long away from such delights. This technique is new to me but I might investigate and have a go

Oh to be able to craft with friends, how wonderful. I recently stumbled onto the same You Tube video and was inspired to try the technique but haven't as yet! :)

It’s funny I was just thinking about you this morning and hoping you were OK as I hadn’t seen a post from you for a while, then up pops your post! So the retreat explains it! An interesting technique which I haven’t come across before, but makes very pretty cards. Looks like we might be getting some of your heat later this week and not before time. “Flaming June” it has certainly not been! xx

I haven't tried this technique, but I sure need to. What a gorgeous heart and the leftovers are artsy and fun. Glad they didn't go to waste! I'm envious that you got together with these sweet and talented ladies. So glad you had a good visit and time to be together!

How wonderful that you got to get together with these wonderful crafty friends, Darnell. FYI: I still have the envelope with the money I saved for the Lakehouse Retreat back in - what year was that?
You got fantastic results with that technique. I don't have many colors of embossing powders, mostly metallics and glitters, but I may have to invest. I'll be sure and watch the video to get all the hints.

Lucky you five (or I should say 6 since Hammy attended!) to be on a crafty retreat - thanks for sharing the photos and the fun technique you did! Your cards look amazing, Darnell - I've not heard of that method either and am determined to try it! Thanks for the inspiration!!

What cool cards and technique Darnell! Have to admit I've never even heard of the technique let alone tried it, but I do have lots of unused jars of colored embossing powders (that I HAD to have...why I don't remember!!), so I should give this a try. Sounds like a FUN group and FUN times, and glad you were able to get together like old times!! Michele and I got together last week, but that's about as far as I travel these days...still fun to get together though!! Hope you're doing well and your hip has completely healed. Hugs and have a great week! (Supposed to be 103 here on Wednesday...yikes, I don't ever remember temps like that here in Michigan before!!) :0)

Oh boy we did have fun! So glad we risked it! Amazing what success we had trying out techniques & love your results!

Karen said...

Lucky you! I recognized a couple of internet friends in that group, one of whom I've even met in person! Once every so often there are three of us here who get together to craft. Truth is, we rarely get much done other than talking about crafting! To get away with friends would be awesome. Now to your wonderful cards! I've never heard of this technique, but I'll be checking out the video. I love the heart with those fabulous Reverse Confetti frames, and the floral is also a fave!

A retreat! Tip top, I bet it was a blast, how lovely to finally break back in to a bit more of a normal schedule! Loving the pouncing, I have to admit to liking the arty cards even more than the intendeds…but there’s not much in it really, they’re all great!

You kept us on track with lots of fun techniques and chatting! I'm sure that my cute "pounced" star would be sitting on a card front now if Hammy had come home with me! Thanks for the adventure and it was fun to meet you in person!

Thank you so much for the lovely birthday card. I had a lovely birthday weekend, with many lovely gifts, and surprise tickets for an Andre Botcelli concert here in Inverness next month, from Damian and Moreen, who are also going.
Lucky you having hot weather, our's is so changeable and still fairly cool for this time of year, take care, Kate x

You got some unique and beautiful results from your new technique. I had never heard of doing this before. It sounds like the sort of technique that would be super fun with friends, laughing together as you all try to master it.

I am heading to Oregon in a couple of weeks - not to craft with friends, but to visit a couple of our kids who live there and to get some hugs from our beautiful granddaughter. I sure hopw they have cool NW weather. It's been HOT (in the upper 90s) here in Minnesota lately.

Wow, this technique is so cool Auntie! I love the colors and looks you got. Your cards are fabulous for sure. I watched the video and was amazed, not sure I have the right embossing powders to try this technique but I hope to try it out anyway. If it doesn't work, then I will have to wait to get the right ones. Glad you had a little get away to craft with friend Auntie! It always recharges the batteries when you can get away. Looks like you ladies had lots of fun too. Hugs, Brenda

I know you all had lots of fun and I'm sure sorry I missed it. What a great technique with very cool results. The flame is perfect in the heart. Thinking Valentine. Really love the results on the flower, too. Unlike anything I've ever done. Look at you all having lunch, so happy. I love that!

I'm a little late to the party but want to say it was so wonderful seeing you and Greta again and meeting Vikki. That was a fun technique and was wondering where my creations are. I did organize everything when I got home and that's about it. It was so fun getting together and crafting together with all of you talented crafters. Also, thank you for the thank you card that you made with my background that I was going to throw away. Haha. Lovely card. Love and Hugs, Lin

Love the cards you made.

Oh Darnell, these cards are beautiful!! However, the words skins and fragile are scary enough to ensure that I will probably never try this technique myself. Loved the photos of your Oregon retreat and am envious of your getting together with such creative card makers. My group of local friends are scrapbookers only, and do NOT stamp or make cards. Since I rarely, if ever, scrapbook anymore, I usually stamp and color images when we get together and never get messy. When I first got back to stamping, years ago, I had a Stampin' Up demonstrator who held the most wonderful stamping classes. She went beyond the standard SU style and taught us how to heat emboss, use brayers and glossy paper, and even shrink plastic. I miss those days!
