Hello Stamplings!
Look it's me again already! I have had a few good days and took advantage of it to play in some favorite challenges. Put on your sunglasses!

This card is for CAS Mix Up. This month the challenge is hosted by Hilary and the prompt is to use gesso with a stencil. I'm not gonna lie, I bungled a bunch of paper having a play with gesso. It's not difficult to work with, just sometimes things go awry. Or amiss. Or askew. You gotta love words. Where awas I? Oh, yes, gesso.
(The word gesso is red-underlined throughout the draft of this post, indicating it is misspelled. I right-clicked on gesso to see what was wrong with my spelling, only to find out that Blogger thinks I'm trying to type the word gestapo!)
For this make, I pounced gesso through a Funky Fossil stencil and let it dry. Like mashed potatoes, I over-indulged a bit with the gesso, but I still liked the result. Of all the videos I watched about various ways to use gesso, I chose to spray color over the dry gesso'd panel. I used my NBUS Wendy Vecchi Mica Sprays in cornflower blue, buttercup, and pearl. Well to be honest, since the bottles are small, Hammy did the schpraying. Both panel and hamster are ablaze with schparkle.
I'm not sure why, but some of the spray was not resisted by the gesso. Anyone? Anyway, as if that schparkle wasn't enough, I added the gesso panel to a shiny gold card base which I embossed with SU's Subtle e/f. The die-cut sediment was in my stash, made from a snippet of Brusho'd Yupo paper.

I don't know if it was the black card background or what, but I couldn't capture the brightness of all that gold even in the sunlight. This is one of my favorite poinsettia stamps. It is "Festive Poinsettia" from Altenew. I made similar cards last year because it's very QACAS with the simple gold-embossed image and sediment. A stitched gold frame finished it off ... as well as allowing Hammy free reign with a wee paintbrush and pot of watered down gold ink.
Challenges
- CAS Christmas: Hosted by Hideko. Prompt: Sparkle and/or Shine.
- HLS Christmas: Anything Goes with the option of Metallic.
- Jingle Belles: My Sweet Embossable You! (Heat-embossing.)
Here's a funny thing I do and I'm wondering if you do it, too: whenever I write a text message to someone on my cell phone, as I'm hitting send I look up to the top to see if I'm sending it to the person I intend.
As.I'm.hitting.send.
Which, of course, is too late if you're sending it to the wrong person! Every time I do it, I think what a moron I am ... yet every time that's what I do!😄

Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*
As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse, being a follower, and leaving me some love!

The gold embossed panel looks fab with the gesso panel Darnell and I love the gold poinsettia against the black. :)
ReplyDeleteA great way to use the gesso! And a beautiful soft result! But your poinsettastamp is such a beauty... that is my favorite and that whilst I am totally not in any x-mas mood... Hugs, Gerrina
ReplyDeleteLoving the contrast between the gesso and the shiny panel in card 1 and the black goes so well with the gold on the second.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cards, Darnell. I don't think I've ever worked with gesso, or if I have it was so long ago, I clearly don't remember. I think it is great tha you have fun with so many techniques! The poinsettia you used is lovely. I don't think I've looked at who I am sending the text too, but I have been prone to not proofread a text and then realize I've messed up word choise or the like. I hope you have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteTwo gorgeous cards Darnell hugs Sue x
ReplyDeleteThe matt texture of the gesso with the shiny golden finish of the paper stand in beautiful contrast with each other.
ReplyDeleteShine indeed. Love that e/f on the gold. Have to give that a try. The poinsettia is spectacular. Gold and black play well together. I hear you on the text. I have been getting some of those--not from you but from others who are not checking who they are sending to. Or maybe it is spam. My fault with texts is not seeing if spell checker messed up some words. 'cause there is no way to take it back!
ReplyDeleteI find that sometimes gesso takes in the ink too, Dolly. I don't know why, I just roll with it. The color does accentuate the gessoed flowers and the shine of the gold is amazing! Love the poinsettia and QACASness of the second card. I need to remember that because I'm way behind on Christmas cards. Thanks so much for sharing with us at CAS Mix Up!
ReplyDeleteYou've made two beautiful cards! I like the look of the gesso! I have some but I didn't have much success In using it. I think I need to try again.
ReplyDeleteDon't you love auto correct on your phone. I don't always proof read the messages before I send them. Then I can't believe how my message got changed. And Yes, I have been guilty of sending my messages to the wrong person.
(It does help sometimes to know that you're not the only one doing these things.
PS. I am once again trying to organize my craft room (I've lost count of how many times I have had to do that!) I make just one card and it will be a total disaster. So right now I am going through my craft supplies to see what I need to let go... One of my next boxes is the box of pastes (Yes the one with the gesso). I have to see how many of them have dried out from not being using used.
Hope you have a great day., Blessings, Jill
Lots of pretty shimmer and shine happening here today, Darnell! I've never worked with gesso (or the Gestapo for that matter!!) but you've done a marvelous job. I see why this is a favorite poinsettia image. That hammy is a whiz with his tiny paintbrush! Two fabulous cards. So happy to have you joining us at CAS Christmas!
ReplyDeleteHI Darnell,
ReplyDeletewhat wonderful cards and their designs look stunning.
Love both of them because as you know I am a person that loves bling, golds, and silver.
Your Gold design looks very luxurious and beautiful.
Love the mica used it is very efective.
Your second card is also very luxurious and beautifully designed too.
Love that gorgeous poinsettia against the dark background.
Lots of crafty love and hugs from my house to yours.
Jenny L.
Two beauties, Darnell - just love the gesso with all spritz & atop that shimmery card! And your gold poinsettia looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteTwo beautiful cards Darnell. Such pretty designs, especially the poinsettia card, lovely colours too, Kate x
ReplyDeleteI just love the gold on both beautiful cards but I've never tried gesso myself. You did a great job with it and I love the embossed panel on the first with all the tiny gold splatters on the 2nd. I cannot relate to sending texts because I don't have a cellphone and wouldn't know how to text even if I did have one! LOL I'm probably better off not having one after reading what you do with texting! LOL
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see you in the gallery for our gesso and stencil challenge this month. Well done for having a go, it is certainly a learning curve, but rather a nice one I think. Your card is beautiful, I just love all the shine. The shinier the batter as far as I am concerned. Thanks so much for joining us. Your gold embossed poinsettia is wonderful too and the splatters are perfect. I often get that red dotted line under words, it always makes me feel ignorant, but it doesn't recognise some words such as watercolour being all one word instead of two. Having said that it hasn't underlined it this time! As for sending messages and all things electronic, if I check it is always correct, if I don't check it will be wrong! xx
ReplyDeleteGood thing I had my shades on........love all the shine! Beautiful cards!
ReplyDeleteLynn
What a golden and shiny post Darnell!! Gorgeous golden cards! xx
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a gold post :) Love the contrast by the textures of the stencilled gesso and the gold cardstock, and the poinsettia looks so striking on black, I can image its sparkling in real life!
ReplyDeleteHugs
Both cards are fantastic and as shiny as California sunshine, Darnell! The gesso'd panel is so pretty with a hint of Mica Spray colors Hammy perfectly schprayed. The two-toned poinsettia card is gorgeous and elegant, and the stitched gold frame gives the card a finished look. I need to get Hammy's help when schpattering. Thank you so much for playing along with us at CAS Challenges!
ReplyDeleteHideko xx
Beautiful shine and texture on your first card. I love that the gold has more real estate than the gesso. IT really brings out the gesso somehow.
ReplyDeleteYour second card is fabulous, love the gold on black.
Oh my...Dolly, both your cards are gorgeous. So pleased you were able to join us at CAS Mix up with your Stunning Gesso'd Hello card:-) Your gesso stenciled flowers panel is so beautiful and I love how you picked up the colors with your pretty die cut sentiment. The gold shiny panel is such a beautiful addition to your post...what a beauty. Thank you for treating us to more shiny CAS beauty with your gorgeous poinsettia card too. TFS .... sending you much love, my dear friend. Hugs...Nancy
ReplyDeletetwo gorgeous cards Darnell, your poinsettia is beautiful glistening against the black ♥ Thanks for joining us at CAS Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI’m glad to hear that you’re feeling better. Both cards are very pretty with all of the gold. That poinsettia stamp is so lovely-I May need to get it!
ReplyDeleteTwo wonderful cards! Love the sparkle, gesso and all that shine!
ReplyDeletewhat a gorgeous holiday bloom ... so very glad you got Embossable with us at Jingle Belles.
ReplyDeleteWilliam DeVane says to invest in gold and you did just that with these brilliant cards, Darnell. The gesso panel is wonderfully sparkled with Mica and I can see why you love that poinsettia stamp. Glorious in gold.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if you could tell us ahead of time we need sunglasses to view this post. Whew, the shine is awesome on both cards. The subtle e/f made the gold sparkle even more and the gesso looks so pretty. The gold poinsettia against the black c/s is awesome. I can see why you like it so much.
ReplyDeleteTwo beauties Darnell! You're a lot braver than I am with the gesso...I keep hemming and hawing over whether or not I want to play along AND deal with the mess! Your card was definitely worth the mess and multiple tries though, as it came out beautifully! And your Poinsettia card is FABULOUS! That image is one of my favorites from Altenew too...so easy to make beautiful cards! And I love, LOVE how you embossed it in gold on the black...so dramatic looking and perfect for Sparkle & Shine challenge! Glad to hear you had some good days in a row and were able to be creative...I always enjoy coming to your blog to see your creativity and of course for a few chuckles too! Take care! Hugs. :0)
ReplyDeleteI love the 'mashed potato' look of your gesso-ing Sis (!) - and the sprays made a great background around your stenciling! The gold paper really makes is all look quite regal and shimmery! Your gold embossed poinsettia is jst gorgeous on the black panel - framed in the sticted gold framing makes it all so elegant! thanks for playing with us at CAS Christmas! xx
ReplyDeleteI really love the glitz and glamour of your cards. Had to put my sunglasses on for the first one, but it was worth it! There's just something about "shiny" that makes us happy.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to read that you've had some good days of late. May they continue!
I have a bottle of gesso but have never used it! I may join the challenge now that you've inspired me. Love your shiney cards, especially the gold 'n black one. Two misspellings this time, glad I checked. :-) Hugs to you, hoping you feel better each and every day.
ReplyDeleteSo happy you played along with both CAS challenges, Dolly! LOVE your stenciled gesso flowers with the sparkly spray. Gorgeous against the bright gold card base with embossing. Gesso sometimes takes on the colour that is put on over top. You need to wipe gently with a cloth to remove most of it. Usually, some of the colour always remains. It's a tricky product. You did great!
ReplyDeleteLove the gorgeous gold embossed poinsettia with gold frame. So gorgeous and elegant with the black card base. Love the splatters ... Hammy did good! xx
Two fabulous cards Darnell, love the large letters and the background colours stunning l didn't need any sunglasses lol your poinsettia is stunning lovely gold and the splashes is really noticeable on the black background too totally and as always two beautiful cards x
ReplyDeleteTwo super cards Darnell, love all the sparkle and shine. Great work with the gesso, I must admit that my bottle of gesso is pretty much still full. I really ought have a play with it, just waiting until I'm in a 'messy' mood.... which might be quite a while. 🤣
ReplyDeleteBoth of these are just beautiful Darnell!!
ReplyDeleteTwo beautiful and shiny cards my friend! Your poinsettia is gorgeous with the dark background! thank you for playing along with us at CAS Christmas! Love you!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, what gorgeous cards! Of course I'm bound to say that the gold embossing against the dramatic dark background is my favorite, right?! So happy you could join our embossing fun at Jingle Belles!
ReplyDeleteOhhh Darnell and Hammy you have made a couple of masterpieces - love, love, love that gesso'd card with the textured gold base. The elegance of the gold on black is awesome!!!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings
Maxine
I second guess myself all the time on my cell phone...I can't get used to the size of it :)
ReplyDeleteTwo gorgeous cards, Darnell! I love all the shimmer and shine, especially your beautiful Poinsettia against the black background...such a lovely Christmas card! Thanks so much for playing along with us at CAS Christmas! xx
I love the texture of your gesso'd flowers and the gold card base. Wow for that! Pretty with the sprayed on color including the parts that didn't resist which just add more interest. Your gold on black in the second card is striking and elegant. Photos rarely do justice to sparkle and shine. I know this is so much more IRL. By the way, I have received more than one text from a friend who apparently does exactly as you. Thankfully they were nothing I shouldn't have seen.
ReplyDeleteLoving your shiny cards Darnell with their different techniques. I have no idea how the sprays were getting the better of the gestapo but GO THEM! It is useless to resist!! Love the quiet elegance of the beautiful poinsettia with the dramatic black background and splatters. Autocorrect is a laugh isn't it! Mwah! Vicky x
ReplyDeleteWhat a great look with the gesso'd circular shapes and the pretty sparkle of the sprayed colours and the gold textured card..a really pretty look Darnell, and the Brusho on sentiment looks great with it. The second is gorgeous with the gold heat embossed poinsettia against the black background and the stitched gold frame and spattering finishes it brilliantly. x
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your winning shout out on the CAS Christmas challenge for September!! Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteOh, D. I'm so missing your lovely creations in my inbox. Alas I'm just awful at actually reading my Reading List - something I'm trying to be better at!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I caught this gorgeous gold Poinsettia in the winner's circle at CAS Christmas! I'm seeing that gold embossing quite perfectly!
