Anniversaries and Playhouse Makeover!

Hello Stamplings!

Tis I, twizzlers, didja miss me? Happy New Year! I missed you and I hope you are all well and you've enjoyed the holidays! And if you are in the middle of the wintry deep freeze across the nation, I hope you are tucked up warm and cozy.

I don't have a card for you because all my products were packed up until recently, but I thought I'd stop in and let you how it's going.

Anniversaries

Yesterday was our 53rd wedding anniversary, she says, looking content, happy, and nonplussed! The Mister agrees. "Life is a whizzer," he says, "No doubt about it!" That's why each speeding day is a blessing!
πŸ’•πŸΈπŸ’•
Today is also the 12th anniversary of my blog. Well, I actually started it a bit earlier than that, but to make things simpler to remember, I celebrate my blog anniversary at the same time as my wedding anniversary for post porpoises.

Playhouse Makeover

And that brings me to the Playhouse makeover. For the last couple of years, I have been feeling a bit, I don't know, adrift. I imagine it's not uncommon to feel a bit of burn out or boredom after you've been at a hobby for ten years or more. Plus, many of my friends moved on and/or stopped blogging and when Feedburner left, it ended my subscriptions to hundreds of blogs. Those things made me feel less connected with the craft, the comments, and the camaraderie that I once enjoyed. What to do?

Well, to start, I thought maybe it was time to do a deep clean of the Playhouse. A lot of paper-cutting dust had to have accumulated behind the cabinets after 13 years, which can't be great for breathing. And a lot of my schtuff needed to find new homes before I could rationalize buying new schtuff to freshen my perspective.

I didn't take as many photos as I should have, but you know how it is when you get going on something. I do have a few 'in a nutshell' photos to give you the low-down. The whole process has taken several weeks because I went slowly in order to be thoughtful about it and avoid hurting myself.

Here are some "before" photos:
I packed up every single thing, purging as I went.

Here are a few "during" photos:
The middle photo is everything stacked in the garage. Behind what you see are more cabinets and many boxes which were filled with the things I kept. We were able to move everything out except for my glass corner desk. Once the Playhouse was empty, cleaned, and prepped, I gave the walls a fresh coat of pale creamy paint.

The "after" photos:
Not much has changed in terms of layout, except the large cupboard and the map cabinet on top of it are now gone. They served me well for many years, holding hundreds of wooden stamps, but I no longer need that massive furniture. It's great to be able to reach the bottom shelves of the overhead cupboards without standing on a stool and to have more "breathing" room. And Nellie loves her little tucked-in space!

I managed to cut my schtuff in half! I'm especially pleased that I got rid of half my patterned and colored paper! You can see in the photo above (bottom right corner) that tall dresser with handles to the left of the window has eight deep drawers. That's where I stored all that type of paper. After purging, the paper I kept fits entirely in only four of the drawers! (I have a friend who's an elementary teacher and she was delighted to get all that paper, so we were both happy!)

I am missing the pretty colors that I had painted the drawers of my old map cabinet, so I might do that again with the two cabinets on the long wall. I'll decide after I hang some colored art on the walls.

So that's the update! I know a lot of you were also planning to do some cleaning, or purging, or reorganizing of your craft spaces and I hope it's going well for you!

Looking Forward

I haven't made any progress on other projects in the house and garden, but doing the Playhouse was a big accomplishment! As for card-making and blogging, I'm feeling refreshed and hoping to put a plan of action together soon that will get me back into some sort of an enjoyable routine again.

~~~
Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*
As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to join as a follower!
I leave you with greetings from Hammy, who was adept at both keeping me company and keeping out of my way!
Mwah!
*Life is too short!
  3. So pleased to see you back after your cleansing, purging and painting of The Playhouse Darnell, a good way to start the new year and it looks great, and Nellie looks very happy with her own little space where she can snooze and keep you company. I should be sorting out my craft area as it is at one end of the living room and boxes are heaped up more than they used to be with not enough space for all my stamps, and I know there are ones from when I started which never see the light of day..lol. x
  6. 53 years is definitely worth celebrating - congratulations. Congrats too on your major clear out and reorganisation. It really does look impressive. I can see why you are feeling pleased about it. You should be especially as you decorated as well. I shall look forward to seeing what you make in your newly organised space. Hope you found lots of precious things that you forgot you had xx
  7. Congratulations on the 53rd anniversary! We hit 50 last year, and it felt quite amazing, I love the fresh, clean look of the Playhouse. I had to move everything out of my craft room earlier this year, and took several trunkloads of supplies to a charity craft store. They repackage your goodies and resell them to benefit a local charity. The result of all that work was new furniture and a fresh paint job for my craft room. I loved crafting before, but it's way more fun now! Happy New Year!
  10. Happy anniversary to you, my friend! Life sure is a whizzer. Congratulations on your playhouse re-do also. I love what you've done with the place. It feels so good to accomplish something like that. As you know, I'm a big purger, too. I do frequent small purges, but I think I'm due for another big one. We all know people like us are not going to quit bringing home the new stuff. I really enjoyed seeing all the pictures and reading about the process. Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us.
  11. Happy Anniversary, wow 53 years, that is fabulous, I'm on my second marriage, we've been together 35 years and married 22 this year, but I'll never see 53 lo!! I am so impressed you cleaned and purged, something I hope to do before Spring, I have so much but did let go of over 100 SU stamp sets I never use anymore and lots of 12x12 papers and most of my stickers since I gave up scrapbooking years ago, but you have inspired me to thoroughly go threw it all once again! At my age it's time!! You room look wonderful and I can only imagine how much work it was and so many hard decisions of what to keep and what to let go!! Thanks for sharing and inspiring us!!
Such a brave lady to blow up the whole craftroom, purge, paint and hen rebuild your nest! After all this hard work with the furniture moved to the garage and then put again, your hubby will file for divorce LOL :D
    Love the new fresh breathing air of your craftroom and that little space just for Nellie, how cute!
Thank you again for your update and can't wait until you get to start creating again too. Love and Big Hugs, dear friend. Nancy
  17. I am so angry with myself that I missed your Anniversary again. (and you NEVER miss ours) Hope it was a great day.
    The last time I gave my room a major clean our...It took me a month to do it. Now you would never know that by looking at it not. I also got rid of a lot of things and Yes, My extra paper went to a school teacher. and stickers went to a friend whose daughter was hone schooling her children.
  18. Happy Anniversary, Happy Weight Loss (well kinda), and Happy Life! Lots going on and it seems you've mastered the tasks at hand quite well. I look forward to seeing you creating again, and so happy you are well!
  19. Happy Anniversary! I wish I'd known so I could have sent you a card, but congrats on all those wonderful years together. I wondered if you also had given up your blog, but the job you were doing must have taken quite some time to complete! You did good and I love Nellie snuggled in her own little space. Congrats on purging. I'm slower with it. I use a product and toss it in a donation box and when the box is full I remove it to the basement or garage - next step is out the door. I hope you're feeling well and happy, and I miss your blog, but I'll stay tuned. (as long as I don't turn into a frozen popsicle with our bitter cold weather) LOL
  20. Happy 53rd Anniversary! And congratulations on the Playhouse clean out. That was a big job. I can't even imagine taking everything out of my crafting space, purging the unwanted or unused items, and then putting the rest back. Whew! I'm tired just thinking about it. I hope you keep blogging. Your posts always brighten my day!
  21. Happy anniversary to you and Mister!! And happy 12th anniversary on your blog. We started blogging at the same time, so I'm celebrating along with you! :) And congrats on your big clean out of the Playhouse ... so much to celebrate! Great work reducing your suppplies by 1/2, that's an amazing accomplishment. The Playhouse looks so good with the fresh coat of paint too. You've worked hard, my friend.
    Looking forward to having you back blogging. I've missed you! Love, Lolly
  22. Happy New Year Darnell, and Hammy. I am so sorry you lost so many of your subscribers and subscriptions - that's hard :(
    Loving you fresh new look to the playhouse - I am still unpacking, and doing some more purging 'post moving', but I cannot fully unpack until I have some shelves added to the Queen's Suite... that will come with time! Until then, I am still moving cartons and diving into them when crafting - so glad I labelled them!
    Good to know Hammy was astute and managed to survive your Playhouse renovations, and did not get himself 'purged' :)
    Blessings
  25. Congrats on both your anniversaries, time flies when you're having fun!
    The playhouse looks great after its purge and redecoration, I really must try harder to 'loose' some of my DP. Mind you, my BFF keeps purging hers and passing it all over to me!!! I'm hunkering down this week as temps plummet, not as much as central US but its still bl***y freezing!
  26. Happy 53rd anniversary to you both! The playroom makeover looks good! xx
  27. So happy to "see" you again, Darnell! What a fantastic accomplishment. Your playhouse looks fabulous and I'm sure you are feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. I hope you will have many happy hours of creative time in there this year! Crafty hugs!
  28. What an amazing job — the playhouse looks great! Happy Anniversary and thanks for the update! I don’t comment often but I love your blog. Been a follower for years.
  29. happy anniversary on both counts Darnell! And many more to come I hope.
    Congratulations on your playhouse transformation! It must feel really good to go through everything properly, repaint etc etc. I can never find the time to do this. I get the odd half day here and there but you can never really make a dent in it with that amount of time! haha!
    Hope you get some time to craft soon! Hugs, Lisa
  30. Happy Anniversary a day late. So cool to see your accomplishment. Good for you on the purging and cleaning. I plan to do some as well. I never seem to empty out that bin of new stuff and I keep adding to it. Fortunately the last year has had few new things that excited me so maybe a dent will be made. Thanks for sharing your project with us and I hope to see your cards soon. Hugs.
  31. This is a wonderful milestone for you and hubby as well as blogging. Happy anniversary! Your playhouse looks amazing - so organized and spacious. You have to feel so much lighter and ready to go again. You have inspired me to do the same since I have so much I've never used. Even Hammy looks happy now that it is finished and he can come out now.
    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes I missed you!!! You really touched on a lot of familiar things with your comments, Darnell. We started our blogs about the same time and lost a lot of commenters etc when Feedburner left. I have a way to subscribe but most of those never comment. I have an on again - off again relationship with Instagram so I miss out on a lot of things happening there. But that said - I can't go a day without creating something. I've been a creator all my life and card making is such an instant gratification that I keep at it.
    It's too bad you got rid of your colorful drawers. That's the first thing I noticed in the photo. I can see why you no longer need them so I do hope you'll paint some others. I do love color.
    I look forward to some new creations from you and Hammy. It will be fun now that things are clean and organized.
    BTW: Happy Anniversary!
  34. Happy happy to you and The Mister, D! What a wonderful accomplishment - you're obviously meant for each other!
    Well done on your Playhouse Rehab, too - I really enjoy rearranging my room - actually moving the furniture around in every room in the whole house kind of makes it all fresh again! We've been here in this house for seven years already - and I've rearranged my studio three times! I am very happy with where everything has landed now... okay. For now. lol xx
  35. Thanks for sharing the photos, Darnell! What a massive mission! Good job on purging. I really haven't purged much of anything in over 20 years! Luckily, I have plenty of room. :-) It's always fun to see others' craft rooms.
  36. Happy aniversaries!!
    I too are now more than 10 years on a travel with stamping (and stencilling and scrapping even longer) and am a bit sad to see more and more blogfriends stop with there blogs. Miss the comments and the friendly advice... And FB (I do with one year delay) or Insta (got myself a place, but can't post because I don't have a smartphone or tablet) are by no way as much fun; I think most people show there projects, but don't take the time to leave a comment or scroll to all what others make... (Think if I could see some of the figures of visitors and more I wouldn't bother to post there anymore...).
    But... I still like to make a lot and have so many beautiful stamps that I want to use more times. So I went over to making cards for in my little and bigger Art Journals; I just don't have so many people left that would appriciate a self-made card and the time it took me to make it (and even those I have enough in a box to last me a while). The funny thing is that I know inspire myself by going through my own Art Journals!
    I hope we will see projects from your hand soon; miss them and the inspiration! Hugs, Gerrina
  38. Hammy probably stayed out of the way during the purging, just in case... I had such grand plans on purging after the 1st of the year, but nothing's been done yet...it's been so COLD and snowy that all I've wanted to do is cover up with my afghan and kindle and read! Glad to hear that all of us aren't being slugs though, and your playroom makeover looks FABULOUS Darnell! I truly hope it rekindles some of those sparks for you, now that you have a nice clean and organized space to play in! Thanks for sharing all the photos...loved seeing it all! Take care my friend!! Hugs. :0)
  39. Happy Belated Anniversary! 53 is pretty wonderful! I'm so impressed with The Playhouse makeover, but not at all surprised you did all this! Unfortunately, I'm lacking those genes making it a constant fight to purge and organize. I have made some small changes and just have to plug along. Things do change with time and I'm sure you will feel refreshed when you get back into our little cardmaking world. Hugs, Greta
  43. Wow, Darnell, that is inspiring!! Good for you! My sister (the neat freak one who is a true minimalist) is here visiting with the main goal (other than visiting me) of helping me empty my attic and my study of an accumulation of unused, un-needed stuff, including far too much paper (librarians like to hang on to information! But as she says, there's this thing called the internet now....). It has been quite the process with many trips to charity drop-offs, recycling, the dump. She promises me I will feel much lighter. She wouldn't touch my craft room but has made me promise to go through it. I'm on a roll right now with this clutter clearing so I'm sure I will!
  44. Glad you and Mister had a wonderful anniversary, Darnell - 53 yrs, fabulous! And congrats on 12 with blogging - you certainly have inspired me over the years! Thanks for sharing the Playhouse update photos too - well done on finishing such a massive project. It should inspire me to do the same but I'm frozen here in MN (that's my excuse).
  47. Hi Darnell, you have been busy, I love that you donated your leftover bits and pieces to a teacher, I used to keep a scrap bag next to my craft/pc table to take to work, small hands were delighted to discover left over die cuts amongst the colourful scraps. Have a wonderful week... Megan
  52. Oh, I am SO jealous of your wonderful accomplishment of getting rid and better organizing sis! I am so overwhelmed with my clutter I don't do any picking up and I have 'lost' so many things that I purchase because I just 'put them over there' and then if I move them to a better 'over here' place - I totally forget where that better place was..... UGH Some day soon I just have to do an hour a day or something?!! congrats on your accomplishment and hope you are back to crafting soon! Julia xx
  54. Hi again Darnell... oh yes some more inspiration....first you made me look back and I see I also started blogging in March 2011... that was scary though as you should see what I was making back then... steep learning curve, but I'm happy.... and as you said after so many years 'things have changed' and we need to 'refresh' and glad to read it's not just me... I need to purge too...that will be hard. Thanks for sharing and for visiting and commenting on my sad blog too.... hugs and enjoy your refreshed playhouse... hello Hammie too, Robyn
