Inky Gilding Flakes and New Year I.D.E.A.S.

Hello Stamplings!

I hope you are well wherever you are! Things are perking along here and I'm slowly getting used to my new Playhouse fluxation. It's like teaching an old dog new tricks, but I'm getting the hang of it. I've been thinking of ideas for getting myself into a routine, but more on that further down.

First, it's the 28th and that means it's time to show you what the ladies of the Group of Seven Cardmakers played with this month. We got out the alcohol again ~ inks that is! After making designs on Yupo or glossy paper, we stopped breathing,  corralled our gilding flakes, and put them over the sticky bits.

This is my example:
I should have warned you to put on your sunglasses, sorry. Even as bright as it is, it's hard to capture the full shine of the gilding flakes.

You know that technique where you brayer or otherwise press foil over the sticky bits on your finished AI panel? (quick video) The technique above is similar, except you use gilding flakes instead of foil. If, like mine, your sticky bits aren't very sticky (say what now?), then you apply a thin line of glue where you want your shiny flakes. I was surprised how thick my flake lines were after I brushed off the excess, but I ended up liking how they stood up to all the different bright colors. (If you want a thinner line of flakes, don't press them down flat.)

To find how-to video links and see lots of wonderful and inspiring examples of this technique, please click over to the Group of Seven Cardmakers. And if you try it, please add your design to the linky there!

The greeting on my card is NBUS, so I will link to the NBUS challenge; a few other challenges this month are using NBUS for their briefs, so I will link to Die Cut Divas and Little Red Wagon. And because it's a birthday card, I am linking to Anything Goes at Seize the Birthday.

~~~
Looking Forward, cont.
Following my last post, Hammy and I mulled both our thoughts and some wine and came up with a plan of action to hopefully fix my broken routine. I'm sharing the plan with you because it is my fond hope that by doing so, I will be held accountable to follow through!🀞
In a nutshell, my plan of action is a schedule. Now some people might think a schedule sounds too much like work, but I have tried everything else the last couple of years and relying on self-discipline clearly hasn't worked! This might not work either, but it can't hurt to try, and I'm excited about the fun I am going to have actually using all my schtuffs!
You can't have a schedule without bullet points and, you know me, you can't have bullet points without an aaaackronym!
I'm sure you can imagine with amusement all the various letters Hammy and I came up with, some of which were inappropriate for a family blog.πŸ˜‰ In the end, "I.D.E.A.S." seemed to hit the nail on the head.
P for paper of any sort and another S for stamps are not bulleted, purr say, because they are generally used, although I do hope I will be better at using my patterned, colored, and specialty papers. Of course, as often as possible, I will focus on NBUS and I'm hoping to add a silent V and C to this schedule, so I'll be better at visiting and commenting, which I always enjoyed as much as any other aspect of this hobby!
How it will work: Barring the usual life caveats of illness or company or travels, I am going to post a card or twofer every Monday. (Right there will be more than I've been doing lately!) Each week will feature a letter in the acronym. Because January is almost over, I will start on the first Monday in February and my calendar will look like this:
For the months that have a fifth Monday, I will feature S = stencil.
~~~

Wish me luck! Feel free to use my I.D.E.A.S graphic and join me on this productive journey!πŸ™‹ Just let me know if you do, so we can cheerlead each other along the way! Enjoy your day! No, seriously, enjoy! LITS!*

As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to join as a follower!

Mwah!
*Life is too short!

    What a brill idea to use this schedule to make a routine.
    Sorry not been around much but I have not been blogging much, but still crafting and updating my craft room with more storage and storage solutions to make things easier to find with my old brain.

  5. I love this explosion of color, Dolly! It's so perfect for a birthday card! You asked me about time management? I don't turn the tv on until supper time. Otherwise, I'm lost in tv land instead of creativity. I look forward to each and every blog you post, my friend!

  7. Love your rainbow of colours on your AI panel with the gorgeous shine from the gilding flakes, Dolly. I agree with Cat ... the gilding flakes are messier than using foil, but you get texture, shine, and sparkle. Fabulous challenge that you've made yourself. Seems like many of us are challenging ourselves these days and your IDEAS is awesome! I hope to join you ... probably not all the time, but once in a while. I have a LOT of NBUS to get through! :) Love, Lolly

    Kudos to you for coming up with the plan! I'm tryin to clean/purge my area as well and struggle to create when I'm not doing that. Maybe you've inspired me!

  11. I'm in awe of that inky card, if I tried that it would be mud :)
    Well done on your IDEAS schedule, I will be waiting with bated breath to see all your wonderful creations. You will have to post the schedule on the side bar so we can keep an eye on you xx

  14. What a brilliant concept Darnell - congratulations to you and Hammy for restraining your selves to to what was akshully published...
    I have also been lacking in MOJO, so have decided to make a card most days until I am caught up and ahead of myself.... well, that's the theory, but as you say, life tends to take some twists and turns that we don't appreciate because they mess up our plans...
    Loving your card - and your alternate method of attaching the flakes - no doubt Hammy had fun running around pressing them down. Vibrant cards are my favourite
    Blessings

  19. Bright and pretty card, Darnell. I like the use of the inks and the flakes. Looks like you had fun! Your IDEAS idea(?) sounds like a good one! I wish you luck in becoming more productive. I've already missed my plan to make Christmas cards in January. Ergh. Keep us posted on your progress!

  20. Oh WOW ! What a stunning and colourful AI background you've made and I love how it turned with the addition of the gilding flakes. It's a good way to eliminate the sticky parts that AI usually make. I only use gildings flakes once or twice, just because it gets everywhere when you use them. But when I see the result, I think I will give it a try again. I'm sure that you will quickly get used to your new, freshly reorganized space and I would like to have the courage to do the same because my craft room is a real mess at the moment. Love your I.D.E.A.S plan, and I hope it will work for you....I'm still with my agenda noting everything I have to do in it ! Thanks for sharing and take care. Hugs x

  21. Gorgeous AI card with the golden flakes, Darnell - as I told Julia, I'm inspired to try it!! And, like you, I do better when I have a plan - yours looks like fun and would be a good way to use NBUS in all those categories! Might last me more than a year - lol...

    ReplyDelete
  22. PS - so glad you shared this beauty at Die Cut Divas since we're using your NBUS theme!!

  23. I don't know how long you had to hold your breath to get all those gilding flakes on this card, but it's a wonder you didn't pass out! It is so cheerful with those bright colors. I like your schedule and hope to join you at times. I think it's a great "idea" to have something like this to keep yourself accountable.

  24. A lovely colourful card. A great idea to have a blogging plan too - I find I'm posting quite a lot at the moment but once the weather improves and we're away in our van that will change!

  25. What a bright and cheery make on what has been a rather damp and dismal January day here. I've tried the technique with foil but never thought to use gilding flakes. I may just have to get the inks out and have a play.
    Love your idea of the IDEAS, most f my inspiration is centered around DT commitments but it is good to have some sort of timetable to focus on. These have reduced recently so it's good to have time to play for just fun! :)

  26. Love your card and the gilding flakes. I have to try this and maybe I will joing in o occasion")).

  27. Now THAT is a party card if I've ever witnessed one, D!! Complete with the glam of your gilding - It is mahvelous, dahling!
    As is your plan of attack to use all that fun stuff you have organized over the last few weeks! I'm sure that it feels as if there is lots of new ways to use the old, right?
    Best I.D.E.A. yet! xx

  28. I think this sounds like a great plan, Darnell, and one that also is attainable. And what a fantastic card using your alcohol inks, I dont have any as not sure I have the space and iis sounds messy and apparently smelly too, however I enjoy looking at your result.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Just the pop of bright color I need to see on this dreary gray day! Hope your new plan of attack... IDEAS works for you!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Fabulous effect on your card, your use of alcohol inks and gilding flakes is just awesome, so colourful and full of life!
    You are the queen of acronyms once again! :D Good luck with your planning, great idea if you need to schedule your craft life!

  31. Wow, that is some background. Truly amazing and it will make someone a very special birthday card. How you managed to stop those colours all mingling into mud, I will never know, but you did, and it is stunning. Good luck with your schedule. If you really want to get on with things it is always best to tell people, that way you are more likely to follow through. Good luck. I am glad you have chosen Mondays as I need something to cheer me up on a Monday. Looking forward to it xx

  32. Since you were generous enough to send me some gilding flakes I have no excuse not to join in this fun technique, Darnell. I love your card with all the bright colors and the more gold the better.
    I'd be happy to be your cheerleader but I'm too random to stick to a schedule. Plus I have DT duties to fill so that keeps me going. My goal is to use my older products, maybe combined with new. I do not generally have a NBUS pile since I try to use orders right away but after Christmas sales did make a little pile that I'm anxious to play with.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Fabulous card Darnell, I love the bright vivid colours. Good luck with your new IDEAS schedule, sound like a good plan.

  34. I DO wish you luck, Darnell!! I hope that goes well for you. Your alcohol ink card is very lovely, by the way. Good to see you back here with a card.

  35. I love your humor in your post. But wait, it's the card I came to see. LOL. I love all the gold flakes and the colors. Fantastic card. So glad you joined us at Die Cut Divas.

  36. This card caught my eye right away, Darnell! All that yummy color and sparkly gold too! I wish you well in your quest to create more. I feel that having a written plan always helps me stay on track. I think your I.D.E.A.S. is fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing with us over at Little Red Wagon this week!

  37. Ohhhh 😎 putting my sunnies on Darnell... gorjuss card, well done!

    And doubly well done on your adventure into IDEAS with a few silent letters added. I'm aiming for once a month, blogging wise. I create okay but blogging is harder these days.
    I'm doing my 2024 series of male cards using a 3D EF Shells by TH. I hunted for ideas on it and everyone used boring beige. Now that's not me. So done 4 colourful techniques so far but am longing for CAS and female so will have break for while.
    Made 5 cards all different is a good attempt for Jan, and one already mailed yesterday.
    Hopefully share it all next WOYWW ie Wednesday, and also at NBUS as quite a few NBUS in it.

    Praying God's blessing on your weekly IDEAs and look fwd to them in my inbox.

    Thanks for sharing, and may God bless you and keep you and all whom you love safe and well for 2024!
    Prayer hugs, Shaz in Oz.x

  38. I love your bright happy card Darnell and I have not heard of this technique before. Another for the 'to try' list. I hope God grants me another life after this one where all I have to do is craft...no chores!...lol...now...onto your IDEAS.....if only my craft room were decorated and sorted I could join you, but as you know all is on hold here for a while, but I shall support you in this, well done for making the plan to spur yourself into action and find that long lost motivation. I think it comes to us we get older how precious life is and how fragile it is too. ( older age crisis.... perhaps and I am having one of those))I look forward to reading about your progress. Hugs xx

  40. This is really gorgeous and, yes bright!! Thanks for joining us at Die Cut Divas this January!

  41. What a gorgeous make! I bought silver gilding flakes and now realise I should have bought gold. Good luck with your new schedule. Perhaps I need something like that as my mojo is hiding somewhere and cannot be found, Jo x

  42. What a bright and happy card and those gilded flakes are such a mess but the results are worth it. I am so glad you joined us at Seize the Birthday as if not I would have missed your plan with IDEAS. I wish you luck and I think it's pretty brilliant. Take care!

  43. I don't do anything with alcohol inks so I love to admire what everyone else does. These colors are stunning and perfect for a birthday card. The gilding flakes make it look to me somewhat like psychedelic marble, ha! I love your schedule idea, mostly because it means we'll be seeing more of you, but also because I'm BIG on organization and planning. I've done similar things in the past, but it's harder to stick to it these days with so many life things that come up. It will be fun to anticipate your Mondays. I'm holding you to it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oeps a very bright card! Love that technique!
    I have the opposite problem; after posting every day from somewhere in Spring and making more than 365 projects last year I just have to get back to make less1 Only it is hard as you did that for such a long time... t didn't work out good jet; I have posts of projects I made planned until 17 Februar... :)
    Hope it will be better when the weather is turning warmer and sunnier... Hugs, Gerrina

  45. Darnell, that is such I great idea, I may need to 'borrow' it as I have absolutely no inspiration whatsoever!! I am sure Hammy will keep you on track.... Big hugs, Annie xx

  46. Oh, darn, now I have to buy gilding flakes if I want to make spectacular backgrounds like this!! I do like your schedule thing because I seem to be stuck in a die cutting trend and am always surprised at how much I enjoy ink blending or stamping a background. Maybe I'll work on my own acronym schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ooh, how gorgeous and now to buy gilding flakes!! Seriously like your ideas and may need to develop a similar system as I tend to rely on die cutting more than anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I've just been catching up on your blog, seems I got a little behind! Great work with the craft shed and good luck with your IDEAS.
    This is a beautiful vibrant AI (alcohol ink - not AI!) card.

  49. What a fun and fabulous card! I love all of the colours and the metals accents are gorgeous. Thanks for playing along with Seize the Birthday.

  50. How did I miss posting here sis???!!! What a bright and delightful AI panel with the lovely gilding you created for the challenge - love the bold sentiment front and center too.... applying the gilding gave me a hissy fit - didn't stick to much of the pooled AI - and stuck too much with my less then fine line gluing! Personally, your schedule for creating gave me a headache just reading it (sorry!) So good to see you creating again! Julia xx

    ReplyDelete
  51. First of all, let me say how impressed I am with your mixture of AI colours - you managed to keep them quite distinct (rather than ending up with the muddy mess I'd have ended up with!). Love the sparkle from the gilding flakes. And second, let me express admiration for your new plan of action and your acronym. Once I get my craft room reorganized, I must try a similar plan - hope you don't mind if I copy yours!! Though I might just do a five week rotation and keep stencils coming up once every five weeks. I have a lot of them and I don't use them enough!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. You can put the company on notice, Darnell. The new idea of getting yourself and others to search through your supply drawers is a brilliant idea. Each of us has this sin on our conscience. I buy it, put it in the drawer, thinking that I will soon reach for a new purchase and buy something new again... Thanks for the idea. If I overcome laziness, I will definitely use your excellent idea :-)
    xx

  53. Thank you, thank you, thank you dear friend.... this is the most brilliant "idea" (and I've always loved your acronyms and wonderful blog)... and I soooo totally need a huge kick up the bum .... my card making has literally dropped by half consecutively over the last two years and this year I have missed February all together. I have collected sooo much stamping stuff over the years it seems an awful waste to just ignore it... SO - I'm printing off IDEAS and sticking up in plain sight so I won't forget. Thank you again and for Visiting and Commenting.... Let's do this (sorry I'm a few months behind).. huge hugs Robyn

  54. This must be the brightest, most colourful card, I have seen in a while, I absolutely LOVE it. As for a schedule? Any plans I make always collapse, no matter what I do. So no schedule, but I am making all birthday card I need for my large family at the start of a month, so I don't get into a panic. Maybe it's a schedule, come to think of it! DT cards are made a couple of months in advance, too. WOW! I sound so organised. It's commenting that I need a kick up the backside for.
    Have a great week Darnell. x
