Hello Stamplings!
How was your week? I hope you are doing well! Isn't it nice to be able to work in the garden again or watch new growth coming up as bulbs or buds? Things are so unsettled in the world right now, especially here, which makes me appreciate nature more. On the other hand, I have to acknowledge that nature can be cruel and my heart goes out to all those impacted by the ravaging storms of the past week.
Here at the Playhouse, we hit on two seasons.
Onefer
It is the first Monday of April and if you're using the I.D.E.A.S. Calendar, that means I = Ink (any color medium). I did a faux watercoloring using the "direct to stamp" method of coloring the stamp, spritzing, and then stamping onto watercolor paper. The wildflowers are beloved wooden Hero Arts stamp sets called "Real High Country Wildflowers" and "Fanciful Filaments."
Hammy found an unmarked sediment which said "hello spring" and I unceremoniously cut the two words apart to use just the spring and Stanley added a few schplatters. I used a NBUS unmarked border embossing folder to add extra interest and create some balance.
It felt like it still needed something so I girded my loins (sorry for that imagery) and did that thing I see famous and/or brave card artists do and I added some sketch lines with my fine line Pilot pen. I was hesitate at first, but I like the results and had fun trying it.
Challenges
Allsorts: Spring flowers.
Addicted to Stamps and More: Any occasion.
The Flower Challenge: Use spring colors.
Behind the scenes: My wildflower panel above is an odd size for me. That's because just as I finished it, I decided the pink tulip needed a little juizz, so I took my waterbrush and touched it up. (Pink tulip? you might wonder.)
Then I famously looked up at a squirrel outside my window, looked back down, and, absent of mind, brushed a speck off the panel. Oops.

I tried wetting the schmear and blotting it up, but it was no go. Hence the cropped panel and the reason "hello" had to be removed from "hello spring." It was actually a happy accident because over at NBUS, we are sharing our April Fool's Boo-Boo cards if we have 'em! So it's all good!
Twofer
I made this card because I saw the sketch at Freshly Made Sketches and the image reminded me of my NBUS "Create-in-Quads" stencil from Taylored Expressions, called "Mistletoe." The sediment is NBUS from SSS "Holiday Greetings Mix 1."
There is shading on the berries, as well as winking by the lads, but the bright sunshine washed them out. I'm glad the gold schplatters still came through.
Yes, the mistletoe is upside down, but this is another example of how fun card-making is when you want to follow a sketch and there are no mistletoe police to take away your artistic license.

*Life is too short!
Two lovely cards for two different seasons. Your watercolor flowers are so pretty! I like the lines you added to them. Too bad about your oopsie, but the finished card is wonderful. I'm glad there are no mistletoe police as your holiday card is filled with delight! Thank you for sharing, my creative friend!
ReplyDeleteYour flower card is an absolute beauty Darnell, and although it's a bummer about the pink tulip and hello, you made a great save! I really like the outlining you did with the black too...must mean YOU're one of those fancy schmansy artists now too! Well done!! Your berry card is just as pretty and fits that sketch perfectly! Two beauties for sure and we're so glad you shared the first card with us at The Flower Challenge and brightened up our gallery!! Hugs. :0)
ReplyDeleteBoth cards are so pretty, Darnell. I'll be back on Wednesday to link up my latest creation xoxo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful water coloring and nice Christmas card - you are building up that stash nicely! Gardening is on my list for today!!
ReplyDeleteTwo perfect seasonal cards, Darnell - love the delicate watercoloring on card one & the berry stenciling on card two!! Thanks for the inspiration to use inks this week!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your Spring card with the beautiful flowers and leaves. I love direct to stamp and spritz ... it's such a great way to get a true watercoloured look. Your card is such a celebration of Spring and you just have to smile. It's hope. I love your doodling you've added ... it makes a huge difference in defining the flowers. Also, love your beautiful Christmas card. I think everyone loves mistletoe, especially with red berries. :) xx
ReplyDeleteTwo great cards covering different seasons. Love that you shared your mishap with the very pretty Spring design - very well recovered I'd say. The Winter one is a great design too and who says you can't have red mistletoe berries 🤣. Thank you for sharing the watercolour flowers with us at Allsorts
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job of removing the oops from your flower card, but I kinda like that little smear, too. Cute embossed border, and your card is every bit as springy as the word declares. Gosh, I really need to make some progress on Christmas cards. I didn't realize your sprig was mistletoe until you mentioned it. Nope, no mistletoe police in this room!
ReplyDeleteI just posted my IDEAS card for this week. So happy to be back and playing along with your awesome challenge, my friend. xx
ReplyDeleteEven if there were mistletoe police they wouldn't dare say anything bad about your lovely Christmas card, Darnell. Those two stamps were meant to go together to make your wildflower garden and the pen drawing added just the right accent. Thanks for sharing your card with us at The Flower Challenge.
ReplyDeleteI think you might be a budding sketch artist--you really enhanced those flowers! I'm so glad warmer weather is arriving, and the sunshine we have today just makes me smile. Your Christmas card is perfect just the way it is. What law says mistletoe has to go in a specific direction? I had a boo-boo card this week - which I left as is. And it ruffles my feathers when I make big mistakes (like glueing things on upside down). I'll post it once I get a photo or two of it. It will be donated to the thrift store, and it someone buys it, my feathers will be smoothed a bit.
ReplyDeleteHello Darnell.
ReplyDeleteI love your first card, your meadow flowers are stunning! I love adding outlines to the blurry, blurred watercolor. You did it with surgical precision. The painting is gorgeous. And as for the pink tulip... I once had a light pink tulip in my garden, it looked like a pearl with a pink hue. Unfortunately the bulbs were eaten by mice.
I hope you are well and safe. Take care of yourself my dear Darnell.
hugs,
xx
Your sketch lines worked great to make those pretty flowers stand out, Dolly! Too bad about that tulip. If I had a dollar for every time I messed something up trying to fix it, I could buy a plane ticket to California! But you saved it and it's a beautiful way to welcome Spring! Your mistletoe is so pretty with the red berries. Isn't artistic license fun!
ReplyDeleteTwo lovely cards, Darnell. I especially love the first one, a beautiful floral creation. Your pink tulip reminded me of a holiday this time last year to the Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands. There were tulips of every colour and shade you can imagine.
ReplyDeleteLiz xx
You made the most of that oops, Darnell because your spring card turned our beautifully! And as for your twofer, it's a fabulous take on that sketch!
ReplyDeleteLove both cards! I think I have the Hero Arts flower stamp. Thanks for the reminder! 🙂
ReplyDeleteBoth cards are so pretty! Love the mistletoe! The red berries pop! Thanks for joining us this week at Freshly Made Sketches!
ReplyDeleteLove both cards with a little bit favorite for the first one; it is really Spring here... Not much working in the garden while it is possible that it will go under 0 degrees for about a month... Hugs, Gerrina
